With all due respect to both professors.I am a retired engineer and almost every time a problem that could not be solved reached my desk, I always found that I had better get My Facts Right and My Basics Right too. Facts: Russia people and Putin know that NATO and/or Ukraine is not an existential threat. The facts, the basics talk to you even though I live thousands of miles away from Ukr & Russ. Russia or better still, certain “people” in the Russian White House think it would be great to have a bigger sphere of influence around themselves to feel more safe! That is their issue. Fine. Problem is that people anywhere can see the Russian Attitude AND Attitude changes everything. Unfortunately, the way the way the Russia White House treats its own people, its own economy and its surrounding countries and especially those that disagree with it, is nothing that other countries and their people consider worth their while to be part off. Russian neighbors know very well, the Russian state does not really care on what others think, want or do not want, that Standards of living and social support is much lower in Russia, the average Russian life expectancy of 71 years is nearly 5 years shorter than the overall average figure for the European Union, the mysterious deaths of so many, .....the list goes on. So the majority understandably looked in another direction and gave Russia and Putin their back. And that includes Ukraine. Russia needs to change attitude if it want surrounding Countries to support the notion that Russia should be liked and have a say or be consulted in European anything and Russian opinion to be willingly accepted. And NOW it is pretty clear to all Europeans that that we are facing something on a different scale entirely; the largest European war since the days of Hitler and Stalin. This attitude (use of force) has ABSOLUTELY changed everything and achieved the exact opposite for these people in the Russia White House. I repeat. The opposite. Both Sweden and Finland could see Russia as an existential threat - not the other way around. The reason was that what Putin thinks was now driving his life and were wise enough to decided to join the Nato defence alliance to be on the safer side.
Hopefully you are a better engineer than analyst, because you got nothing correct here. This is particularly humorous: "Russia needs to change attitude if it want surrounding Countries to support the notion that Russia should be liked and have a say or be consulted in European anything and Russian opinion to be willingly accepted." Too funny!

You are saying that Ukraine cannot be self determined that Ukraine must be what Russia determines it must be.

What I was thinking. The internet has to be good for something eh?
Putin and Moscow will never accept a short-term Peace, and Russia will always come for its Money! "Those who have to be reminded of the past are condemned to repeat it" George Santanaya (1863-1953).
America will not be supplying trucks to Russia this time. History will not repeat.
In truth, they had accepted it first with the Minsk agreements and then with those in Turkey. It was the West that boycotted them (Zelensky is only a puppet in the hands of the US).

And the experts never expected the fall of the Soviet Union either. Let’s see…
With all due respect to both professors.I am a retired engineer and almost every time a problem that could not be solved reached my desk, I always found that I had better get My Facts Right and My Basics Right too.
@johnsmith1474 well ask yourself why is it that all people want to associate themselves and to come to Europe including migrants and no one wants to go to or have ties or live in Russia. Funny is it not. Not even syrians or Chinese would ever consider Russia
that's the way its gotta be, remember the bay of pigs? this situation was caused by the US
And this was caused by delusional Russia!

2:35 “ Trump is surrounded by people that have Russo phobia”
And they have good reason to be Russo phobic. Putin and many of the old guard that control Russia share the same ultimate goal, this being to avenge the collapse of the Soviet Union whom they hold the West, and specifically the US responsible for. In their dreams they imagine a world where the US dose not exist, and they will never give up on this dream.

Putin’s principal concerns are (1) Russian security (2) The welfare of the Russian ethnic minority in Ukraine. If these issues are honestly dealt with the conflict can be resolved. Both Putin and the NATO leaders well known that if NATO armies get into Ukraine, they do not intend to stop at Ukraine, and the Russian Federation would be their next target.
There is a Russian ethnic minority here in America. We dare you to protect them.

Neville Chamberlain allowed Hitler to take Sudatinland in Czechoslovakia back in 1939 but did that keep him happy?
The whole of Britain was thrilled about Chamberlain's agreement with the Germans.
And, the Germans who made up the Sudetenland were in the streets cheering when Hitler rolled in,
And while millions died in Poland, Czechoslovakia suffered very few casualties and Prague was the only capital city in the battlefront not destroyed by the war.
Really sick of guys like you who've read two books and think they understand the full scope of European history, they reuse two or three tired analogies over & over for every event all over the world. You probably think the US defeated the Nazis, like the typical movie historian.
I suggest you read 50 or so histories, including A.J.P. Taylor's "The Origins of The Second World War" (2018). Things were not as simple as your limited understanding of them.

Very interesting debate. Both sides got valid points. 👍
Nobody should accept demands of terrorists. Russia should mind own business and don't tell other countries what to do.
Maybe USA shouldnt expand Nato to Ukraine as USSR did in cuba
Thats not how geopolitics work. If noone tells anyone what to do, then: 1. we dont need any sort of international institutions cause that what they do. 2. We dont need global policemen or superpowers. 3. Every state by this logic should be completly isolationalist which is not the case in a globalist society. So to conclude, there are superpowers for a reason and we execute our power cause we earned that right. Its either you lead or you being led. You have plenty of examples in modern history how this two sides work.
