  • We traveled to North Georgia to visit one of its most popular state parks at Tallulah Gorge. This is one of the largest and steepest gorges east of the Mississippi, typically striking comparisons with the Linville Gorge of North Carolina. Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and almost 1,000 feet deep, complete with a suspension bridge, six waterfalls, an interpretive center, and hiking trails with 1,099 man-made steps to assist you up and down the canyon walls. There are few places within the southeast that have such an array of activities and the stunning grandeur of Tallulah Gorge.

Tallulah Gorge was also the filming location of the 1971 Burt Reynolds film, Deliverance. This movie tells the epic tale of four friends that canoe down the fictitious Cahulawassee River before it becomes dammed and loses its thrilling rapids. In the movie, the rising waters filmed are actually at Lake Jocassee, created when Duke Power flooded the valley in 1971. Most of the exhilarating canoe trip was filmed on the Chattooga River that straddles the Georgia-South Carolina border. The calmer stretch of water toward the end of the film features Tallulah Gorge itself. This is where they filmed one of the friends scaling the canyon’s sheer cliff face to confront the enemy. Deliverance is, in fact, filled with breath-taking footage of these North Georgia mountains and related tributaries.

Think you missed most of the best overlooks on the north rim. The south rim overlooks are not as good in my view.
