Just fell through the ice and you need a quick fire. It is nighttime, pitch black, and you need the flame's light and extended intense heat to get hastily gathered less than ideal tinder to start a fire. OR, simply, everything's just wet.

Duct tape, I believe, by code should be fire resistant, hence not wanting to continue to burn. The flammability of the Gorilla Tape would preclude them mentioning "duct work" as a recommended use. Another great thing about the Gorilla Tape is its water resistance, making it a great multi-purpose survival item. Thanks for sharing with us David!

I like that you didn't just dismiss the duct tape as not being any good for a fire starter, but that you did some more research and changed the tape brand. You are true to the adage, if at first you don't succeed try try again. Great video and thank you for the demonstration of different duct tapes....

I do not use gorilla tape because there are other that have tested better and stronger, but I will buy me a roll, to carry in my hunting and camping gear along with my stash for fire starter accessories. You taught an old dog a new trick David.

Hey brother , been using the even tinnier roll of go-rilla tape for years I like it for all your reasons. I use a carabiner to retain it on my go pack. And I carry it for not just fire but as for use as well. A big thing you left out is how Go-rilla tape bonds upon itself , when overlapped. Almost like an acid type fuse. After it does that good luck getting it off anything you put it on. Holds like a weld. But it is good for a fire source too. A fellow Bigfoot friend of mine asked about you the other day. I was going to stretch the truth and say oh yeah Dave , known him for years lol. But I didn't, nice video. Never done the tiny tears before, the thinner roll of Go rilla tape is only like a half inch anyways. But I find dozens of uses while afield trust me on that. Peace.

Thank you for going out to get the Gorilla Tape. I will be replacing the Duck tape (not intended for fire starting, just a quick mending tool or bandage) I have wrapped around my Mora Companion Spark knife with Gorilla tape (for all the previous use and now fire starting). Nice shoutout you did mentioning Canterbury, a great self reliance resource. God bless.

Thanks for the follow up video. I switched to gorilla tape some time back for general use due to its superior function and longevity, so now I have another use for it. I'm glad to see you mention of using it for heat and light--I definitely would not cook food on that fire, at least not directly on it like meats, as I'm sure there are plenty of toxic materials in it. But yes, a fast fire for survival even with wet tinder.

I have a ferro rod with some Duct Tape around one edge to help grip it. I had ignited duct tape before and assumed it worked, but decided to give it a go after watching your recent videos. Wouldn't take! I guess I need to buy some Gorilla tape and rewrap it. Great video as usual!

I have found that when using tape as a fire starter, that the ones with a high fiber content have worked the best. Duck brand has almost none while Gorilla Tape has a high count.

KEEP in mind your using a very small ferro rod it does not put out the huge "gobs" of burning spark Dave's 1/2 inch ferro rod does ---- so with your very small rod I'd say it's a complete success

Have you ever tried anything like slivers of a plastic milk jug? That's kind of what that reminds me of, a melting milk jug. Probably need some sort of flammable compound like the glue on Gorilla Tape. Great video, possibilities seem endless.

    • @DavidWestBgood2ppl

I had to test my tapes from the dollar store. I don't like Gorilla because although it's much stronger it peels off more easily than thin tapes that cling better. So I tested IPG USA brand (very thin) and Tape-All USA brand (not as thin) and both burned all the way after being lit by lighter.

  • @kenrhoades8040

I think "duct tape" is by code flame retardant that may be the problem. As you have so well pointed out. I use the black 3M stuff to tack down stage electronics we do not want it to think about "heat" or "fire" from all the stuff that can happen on stage.
