When the Soviet Union fell Japan was the second largest economy in the world for a time.
The US brought back the I-400, I-401 and the I-14. In the picture of the deck gun you will notice a man in civilian cloths walking on the deck. THAT was my dad; Lead Gunners Mate, GM3 John M Johnson Dad was heading into town in Pearl Harbor for liberty; The reason he was wearing civilian clothes.. I still have the Bridge compass from the I-400 in my possession which my Dad brought back after the war. :) Dad, by the way, was the only crew member of all three Subs who had a camera on board and the pictures were posted in book describing the the whole life and voyage of the I-boats. Pretty good video. Good job.

Japan did have a habit of mounting aircraft onto any sea vessel: Ise class battleships, Tone class cruisers, the I-400s
I mean mounting reconisance planes on ships was something all the navies did in ww2. Though the I400 was definitely a far step ahead.

@@Charron684 It wasn't just running out of aircraft carriers. IJN doctrine for scouting from the the start of the war dictated not using carrier-based aircraft for scouting, saving the whole carrier wing for attack. Instead they relied upon scouts mounted on other ships, cruisers especially, for scouting. Most notably, those Tone-class cruisers mentioned above. They were a specific design that broke from the normal IJN heavy-cruiser layout at the time, moving all turrets in front of the superstructure (and reducing the number of turrets to 4), to clear space aft to operate more scout planes.
Point being, while pretty much everyone did some degree of mounting aircraft on ships. You are right though, in the sense that the Japanese took it to something of an extreme due to desperation. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the conversion of the Ise-class ships into that sort of hybrid "battlecarrier" design was an ill-conceived joke. The only thing they can really be forgiven for was the fact that I'm pretty sure they only did the conversion because by that point they probably were going to be just as useless as full battleships, nothing but targets for the US naval aviators.
@@ToxikDouche one would tend to think most WWII battleships had recon and spotter planes. Otherwise you're just fumbling about blindly hoping to run into the enemy and also hoping that your shells hit without having any way to know for sure and make adjustments. Carriers took it to another level of course, but naval battles were *already* being fought from *well* beyond visual range.
Their naval doctrine required it. They didn't use submarines for scouts like we did during the interwar years, they used aircraft from their scouting forces which were typically well armed and fast cruisers. It was also common, and wise, to launch said aircraft and dump all your aviation fuel overboard before an engagement, save it going boomboom and spreading fires to the torpedos full of pure oxygen 🙈

The Germans had a remotely guided anti-ship missile (Fritz X). Of course the Allies worked out pretty quickly that they could just jam the radio and make it unguided but points for creativity I guess.

I lived in Brookings, Oregon as a kid (age 6-9). The Japanese Pilot of the aircraft after the war, gifted his Katana to the City of Brookings; considered his actions not all that honorable. The Katana was held in the local Library which included pictures and the history of the event. Simon Whistler, thanks for the reminder of those childhood memories. Please keep up your video content! =)

Yeah, I’ve been to Brookings, and I did some reading on the sword and it wielder. According to one of his daughters in an interview after his death, he planned on committing suicide right there, if they did not accept.

The deck gun actually was a German gun the Japanese mounted on the I-400,401 & 14. The I-14 was a bit smaller than the 400 and 401.

I first learned of the Seiran when I was able to take a tour the Smitsonian Garber Facility in ‘96. They were in the process of refurbishing the Seiran at the time. The docents were very educating and told a very similar.

YES! I too toured Garber at nearly the same time, saw them working on that plane- fantastic experience. Being so close to so much rare/unique/important aviation hardware was amazing. One of the best vacations of my life!

The British submarine, HMS M2, was a submarine aircraft carrier based on the design of the K-Class, (coal-fired) steam-turbine powered, submarine. Launched in the 1920s, she sank with all hands in Lyme Bay, off the Dorset coast, in 1932. When the wreck was located, the hangar doors were found to be open. This was the probable cause of the sinking. Efforts to salvage the submarine were unsuccessful, and she is now a popular dive site with recreational divers (she lies at a depth of 30m / 100 ft). This is the second time I have heard about bombs dropped by Japanese planes in Oregon. I was surprised that I didn't learn this in school with how much we learn about WWII but this didn't come up.
In my lands of the free where we salutre the red, white and blue we learn factual history. In the US kids are brainwashed by propaganda. So no one outside the US is surprised much. You are only allowed to know what the 'goverment' decides you are to be programmed with. Right now we are seeing bans on Critical Race Theory ontop of the massive stack of free information which are illegal under US law to teach. Now in my lands of the free I could pick To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee as subject to write my essay or for example George by Alex Gino? In the US you would be arrested and sent to a FEMA re-education camp. Those books are banned and illegal too. Very sad but the few Americans who escaped the US and got past the wall? Usually end up in a mental ward. It is almost impossible for them to get a grip on reality when you expose them to the real truth that is taught. Heck majority of Americans actually believe the world is round!

Since submarine videos do well on your channel and with the current conflict in the East, it might be worth covering the Ohio Class Ballistic Missile Submarines, the US’ submerged nuclear deterrent.
The Ohio Class can carry up to 24 Trident II D-5 submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM).
Each SLBM can hold 12 W88 475 kiloton warheads (or 14 W76 100KT warheads) that can be independently sent to different targets over 7000 miles away. That means one submarine can deliver up to 13.68 MEGATONS of thermonuclear destruction to dozens of independent cities.
For reference, the Little Boy atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima was a paltry 15 kilotons.
And there are 14 of these submarines. Technically there are 18 total, but 4 have been retrofitted to fire cruise missiles to comply with the New START treaty.
This comprises roughly 60% of the United States’ total nuclear warhead stockpile.
It's a shame one of the I-400s wasn't preserved as a museum ship for history, but at least a very nice example of its Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft still exists at the Smithsonian's Udvar Hazy museum in Virginia (as is the actual Enola Gay B29). Well worth a visit.
No one of the US crew members agreed with eh US Navy's decision to scuttle the I-boats. But when the US, Russia, Britain and France argued over who would get them, The US, in all it's wisdom decided that no one would get them and used the for testing the new torpedo triggering design on them. (basically, telling the world; "fine, we'll let the air out of the football and nobody will get to play.")
I know it can be hard to source relevant pictures and footage, but I am a little surprised to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the picture of the "I-25" that shelled the continental US.

Not just the biggest subs of WW2, but the biggest subs ever until the Soviet Typhoon.
The I-400 was 400' long, the SSBN 598 USS George Washington class Ballistic Missile Sub Class was 381' 8.5". The 598 class would fit totally inside the US Trident. I was stationed aboard the USS Robert E Lee. SSBN 601 (George Washington Class). Not quit as big as the Tridents but still to this day the largest Diesel Sub ever built in history.

Since you mentioned the balloon bombs, I'm going to shoehorn in a side story that doesn't get enough attention.
The US government kept the balloon bomb attacks secret, both for US morale and in the hope the Japanese would give up if they didn't hear any word that the bombs were making it to the US. But a response was needed. So they transferred the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, an all black unit, to the west coast and trained them as smoke jumpers.
The unit responded to 36 fires with over 1200 individual jumps. But because the whole mission was secret, their story was lost to history.
I've also heard references to an all black fighter squadron that patrolled the west coast, shooting balloons down, but have never been able to find information on them.
So there were successful attacks on American soil beside pearl harbor?
@@dutchess406 If you're just talking WWII, there were a few incidents. A Japanese submarine shelled an oil field outside of Santa Barbara, but didn't cause any damage. I believe another submarine fired a few shells at the coast of Washington, again not causing any damage.
On the east coast, German submarines were sinking vessels off the Atlantic coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Caribbean.
Towards the end of World War II, the US Navy had a brand-new submarine sink at the dock of the Boston Navy Yard. It was raised again and put in storage, never to be used in service. It was eventually sold for $57,000
Shame this hasn't been experimented with more.. however, there have been concepts for planes which can operate as submersibles, so maybe that'd fill the gap if it ever comes to fruition. We've got alot of future ahead of us..
I think laser weapons will make it too risky to operate planes in the foreseeable future.

would the American campaign against the Japanese Merchant fleet during ww2 be considered a major project, the American navy managed to sink the entire Japanese merchant fleet 2 1/2 times by the end of the war.

Calling them aircraft carriers is a *huge* stretch. I mean, the Cleveland class light cruisers carried 4 floatplanes, some battleships and heavy cruisers carried a few more than that (not even considering the hybrids, Ise and Tone), and hell, there was even 3 Fletcher class destroyers that carried a floatplane and catapult in place of one of their torpedo launchers.
Plus, the I-13 and I-14 Submarines carried 2 floatplanes as well.
And, you had the French Surcouf that had two 8 inch guns *and* a floatplane. That was an "underwater cruiser" (i.e. "let's try to get around the Washington Naval Treaty via building submarines with heavy cruiser caliber guns since submarine displacement wasn't limited!") with a plane, which is arguably more interesting.

There is a difference between a u-boat and a submarine. A submarine is designed to remain submerged during its entire patrol, while a u-boat operates on the surface, but submerges for attack. I just learned this myself recently.

U-Boat again is just a phrase that came about from the German word for submarines Unterseeboot, even the definition of the word itself states that its the German word for Submarine
@@starzkream had to come back since I did research as you say, is the U15 a type 206 submarine not a submarine? because the German Navy gives it the U designation and refer to it as a U-boat, so does it never go underwater? it just sits above the waves all the time right?
and is the Klasse 210 not a submarine as well? because both the Norwegians and Germans refer to the Klasse 210 (one of the fastest and most silent submarines on earth) as a U-boat

@@starzkream also you said Uboats stayed on the surface but submerged before attacks? thats blatantly false, German Uboats most often made their attacks from the surface so they could use torpedo tunes as well as their main gun, U-boats would stay submerged UNTIL they attacked, that alone disprove your false theory on Uboats being different from Submarines
staying on the surface while hunting left the Uboats heavily exposed to Radar (which is why the snorkel was invented so the Uboat could stay submerged even longer before making attacks) no sane u boat captain was making patrols above the sea, it left them exposed to aerial recon and attack

"Biggest" doesn't equal "best" and, BTW, every tried putting aircraft on subs during the interwar era but decided it was a stupid idea. IJN apparently never got the memo. Of course, the whole Japanese submarine war in WW2, despite some successes (Indianapolis, Wasp, Juneau,) was misbegotten - instead of focusing on the merchant ships supplying the front, they only tried to get the warships - with limited results.
