That's fine but the game is at its best when you just experiment and find out what everything does through trial and error. It's good to have direction like to know when to build all of the devices to make the next thing but it's a fun game to just learn what everything is through experience I'd say
If Jon makes a playthrough out of this (which I really hope he does, as this game is probably one of the best Tim-Burton styled games out there) I'm almost certain that he will die from sanity-related issues at least a couple of times. Jon's not really known for min/maxing things or paying attention to seemingly minute things. :P
Like when he lost health eating the cooked monster meat, he only noticed the character saying "I don't feel so good" and then says "Well that's fine because I don't have much health" Well yeah, now you have even less...
Needs a spider gland "I have no idea what that is and have never seen it before" Ignores the gland sitting on the floor right next to him. lol never change Jon
More! BTW the Eyebone gets you a little animal companion that carries around more stuff for you! He'll follow along so long as you have the Eyebone in your inventory. An easy way to get your health back up is eating the flower petals. It takes a lot since 1 petal = 1 health, but it's better than dying to a frog or the darkness...
YES! Bring it back! Live stream, series, both. We we haven't even got to see you pick up poo or find out what happens if your sanity falls too far or anything. You must give us more.
4 carrots 2 berries - I've got no food, I've got NO food and my trap has failed. I've no idea what that is, and I've never seen it before. - looks an awful lot like that thing that's right under the icon.
Yes please! Livestream of Don't Starve! Also, few points. 1) Use the roads and paths to your advantage. You move much faster when running on them and they usually lead to something. 2) Make a base (with firepit) along the road (and preferably close to pigs). 3) Firepit is the only fire in the beginning of the game, that you can feed even when it goes out (and thus don't have to build it again or feed it before late evening). 4) Don't feed the fire during the day or evening unless you need it for something else than light. 5) Next time use the trap right on the rabbit hole. 6) You can use some pinecones, twigs, boards and even grass to feed the fire a bit (boards give the most of all) 7) Next time you kill a frog (or catch it with a trap and kill it in your inventory), cook it! You ate it raw and that lowers your sanity and doesn't heal you (even tho cooked ones just give 1hp). 8) Use the shovel for tree stumps and relocating bushes and grass patches too (and moving them close to your base but not too close together beacuse of lightning and fire) 9) When you replant grass turf of berry bush, you have to fertilize them with manure or rot from deteriorated food items. 10) Next time you see an Eye bone, PICK IT even if you have to drop something! Trust me, you'll be glad you did that. 11)The gray thing you need for healing salve is ash and you can get it by burning down a tree stump (you can burn trees and other flamable things by the torch or by setting a fire too close to them). But don't set the whole forest on fire. Wood is still better than charcoal. But charcoal is needed for the crock pot. And you want a crock pot.
This is a great choice for Jon (Just remember to read the advice in the comments if you play more!) He needs to go multi-player though; there are such interesting mechanics, and the banter gets even better with a partner.
Yes! bring it back! You barely seen any of the game, it changes so much as you unlock more characters and understand it a bit more. For instance for that salve I think you needed ash, so basically burn things with a torch or lighter. There are big buffalo/cow things that poop so you can collect that for fertilizer also. And sometimes you can just find farms around, like tiny settlements that have been left. Also that Eye Bone thing was brilliant, if you hold it a chest monster follows you around so you can have mobile storage.
Wow, it's actually kind of refreshing to see someone go blindly into a game like Don't Starve. I would highly suggest at least getting Reign of Giants, Jon. It is exceptional DLC. Shipwrecked is optional since it's pretty much a different game. I could give you an entire guide to survival, but you are enjoying that rare experience of learning everything for yourself. I'm still going to give you a few hints, though. Most supplies are finite to some extent, so don't waste anything if you can help it. Eating flower petals restores health. Choose your base camp wisely. You want to be nearby as many resources as possible. Particularly Beefalo (you'll know them when you see them.) You actually walk faster on paths, so keep that in mind, especially when trying to escape enemies. Cooking vegetables causes them to spoil faster. Cooking meat has the opposite effect. Other than that, have fun. I would love to see more of this and am eager to see the day when you become an expert just be trial and error.
I actually fell in love with this channel after Fallout New Vegas Don’t Starve. It’s funny to think this is your first time playing this all these years later!
A series or live stream of this would be great! Don't Starve is such a good game, though Jon's infamous perception may make things troublesome :p Two important but basic tips: 1. When you eat or use something pay attention to your stats to see how they change. They'll flash green or red depending on if what you just did increased or decreased your stats. For example the monster meat actually hurt you! Stuff like that can be hard to notice otherwise, so pay attention! 2. Inspect everything! You can get useful hints that way, and besides the writing can be pretty witty sometimes! Looking forward to seeing more!
please Jon. more of this. it has been quite the ride seeing you struggle with one of the most frustrating games ever :) and you havent even messed around with the Reign of Giants DLC or the Shipwrecked DLC :)
I'm very interested in seeing more! I've been playing Don't Starved for years. Love to reimagine my early failings through your own. BTW The fire pit doesn't go away when the fire goes out. That's its benefit. And, put the traps on top of the rabbit holes. It's more effective. Last point, your one true goal is to prepare for winter. It gets cold and you can't stray for long from the fire. You need a heating stone, top priority. And a hat. Find the beefalo. Find the beefalo.
Weirdly, 'niter' and 'ignite' come from different roots entirely. 'niter' comes from greek 'natron', possibly from Egyptian 'ntr'. 'ignite' comes from Latin 'ignitus', or set on fire. Niter was originally the name for a different material (natron), but somehow came to mean 'saltpeter' in the 16th century for reasons unknown.
I really enjoyed it, but here's some tips: 1. You have to put the trap right above the rabbit holes. 2. The traps only capture rabbits. Darkness kills you. 3. There's a button for the map, but I don't know which one it is on console. 4. Trees that burn turn into charcoal, which can be used as fireplace fuel or to make a crockpot, which lets you combine four ingredients into a large meal. 5. The firepit doesn't disappear because the rocks stay there. 6. This game has seasons, and you'll need to keep warm during winter. 7. You should wander around the plains (the biomes with yellow grass) looking for beefalo, large furry bison-looking creatures, which generate poop for farms, and you can also shave them for wool. 8. Beefalo aren't agressive unless you attack them, or if it's mating season for them. 9. You can put rocks near a firepit to warm them up and carry them with you during winter to keep you warm. 10. If you kill all of the bees of one hive they will not respawn, much like spiders, and you can dedtroy it and get honey. 11. The garland raises your sanity untill it deteriorates. 12. Every edible thing deteriorates, and it turns from green to red. 13. Every item with green on the backdrop of its item is edible. 14. You can build a lightning rod near your base with the science machine. 15. The hammer allows you to break things and get their items back.
Some tips for Jon if he or Claire ends up playing this in his off time: 1. Therecis a map you can open to see whew you have been and where you are, it will also mark permanent structures ifrc. 2. Basic fires burn out and leave ashes for a few moment before being blown away, ashes are used for the healling salve, fire pits are permanent and can be restarted with more fuel items. 3. You have to bait traps with stuff like berries, seeds to trap the rabbits, also you could put it on top of holes and I think they get caught immediately. Also you can put a trap inbetween the rabbit and hole and scare it into the trap, unless they changed the rabbit AI. 4.There is a clock in top right that shows you what time of day you are in and shows how long each section of day is. There are 2 seasons, Summer and Winter, I think they change every 30 days. You need a large stockplie of food, warm clothes, and a heat stone or 2 to explore. 5. If you find and Eye Bone pick it up. It spawns Chester, a living walking chest that can hold things for you and follow you as long as you hold the Eye Bone. He can die but will respawn if you still have the Eye Bone, and will drop items he has on death. If you drop the Eye Bone it will not Despawn and Chester will stay around the Eye Bone.
YES! This would be an amazing game to livestream! Just beware, there's going to be *a lot* of experienced people who will be shouting at you for not doing things absolutely perfectly, because that's just how this game is.
Some quick tips, because I would love to see you play again: Multiplayer! Multiplayer is great! Don't starve... together! :D Just run from enemies until you at least have a spear and wood armor. (Grass armor is a huge waste of grass.) Almost everything living has the potential to be hostile. Anything that seems great will eventually turn on you. (Except Chester, chester is only great.) Generally don't ignore new things you have not seen before and can pick up or interact with. If they could attack you they already would be, and ignoring them is a good way to miss rare resources. Eyebone is looking at you on this one. Pitchfork + Sod = A free early game fuel source. You can let the fire go out during the day. Ordinary fires can be rebuilt. Fire pits can be reignited. Don't settle early. Build a temp base but be prepared to hammer it down and move when the time comes. There are some fixed features that respawn resources that it is useful to have nearby. Figure out what those are and then settle there. Don't be afraid to have multiple bases - or at least multiple fire pits. It's useful to have one for farming spider nests, for example, or fishing ponds - but you don't want to settle right on top of either of these things. Maybe nearby. Traps directly on top of rabbit holes catch them the second they pop out. Fishing is good, frogs are d***s, BUT frogs can get lured into animal traps and they are a good source of meat themselves. Torches and night travel are pretty good. You need at minimum one spare torch on hand at all times, just in case something attacks you at your fire pit and you need to run. The shovel is important, because you can not only dig up graves but move saplings and berry bushes to a central location. Be sure not to cluster them (or anything flammable) too closely though, and keep them a bit away from where you sleep. Attacks, lightning strikes, and mistakes can all start fires that spread. Lightning rods are good. Don't dig up mushrooms. Mushrooms are great, but they never regrow if dug up. Having a fire pit near a mushroom circle means free mushrooms after every rain. Some things are better eaten raw. Some things are better cooked. Carrots heal more but are less filling cooked, for example. Mushrooms swing both ways. Hammers are good for knocking down pig huts in the wild, bits of scenery, heads on pikes, fun stuff like that. They all produce good resources you can use. The crockpot keeps you easily fed and happy once you trial and error some good recipes. The first thing you think is a good recipe is probably not, just because there is so many. Don't let yourself get locked in. Experiment and figure things out. Just don't add more than one monster meat and/or one big meat and you will be good. Some things are good on sticks. You can have a genuinely good meal with a stick, a monster meat, and two random bits of vegetable or berry. The drying rack gives you meat that is good for healing or traveling with, but also good for storage and use during winter. The big three bump spider farms can be knocked down and moved, turning into a one bump spider nest that will slowly grow. This is quite important for long term survival. Traps work on spiders if you lure them in. It's a useful way to deal with a part of the horde that comes out when you attack three bump spider nests. Tree farms with the nuts/acorns you find from trees are good. Having a row to turn into charcoal (torch the one at the end) and a row to cut down at max growth for more nuts is a good idea. Charcoal is the real stuff to keep your fires burning (AT NIGHT) both for ease and safety. Piggies are your friends until they are not. Having piggy huts nearby is good, but not TOO nearby. Building pig huts is a good idea. Pig armies for defeating spiders and chopping wood are amazing, and pigs love you if you give them good meat - once you learn to manage them (they hate the dark, but torches will keep em close) you can even make a meat gain at the end of the day. Don't be shy about ambush killing pigs while they sleep or do the animation for putting on their fur coats (it gets cold sometimes) They eventually respawn, are perhaps the best source of big meat in the game, and drop a unique and valuable resource.
Several tips. Only pick flowers when on low sanity, as they spawn butterfly’s and are the only reliable healing item. The fire is depleted when runs out of fuel, but the fire pit doesn’t. Put traps over rabbit hole, but killing rabbits depletes sanity. Build a house, armour and the spear befor day 7, as a hoard of dogs will attack. After so many days, a boss will attack, so I would recommend a tutorial on how to kill it as each boss is killed in a different way. Eating flowers restores 1 hp. Make a flower head piece when at low sanity.
FINALLY. I have been waiting for Jon to pick this up. It's going to be painful thoough. I have 500+ hours invested in this game. Mistakes will be made lol. Please make this a series! Atleast survive a full year, then complete adventure mode.
A big tip, don't pick flowers, they spawn butterflies which can be eaten to restore 8 health each. Also, never build campfires, build torches so you can continue to explore through the night, and to save torch durability, keep the torch unequipped until you hear the noise of Charlie, then equip/unequip quickly.
Here is a "short" guide for your first few days in DST. Maps: Press M to open/close your map Your map will be filled in as you explore. Eye Bone: The Eye Bone will summon Chester. Chester is a walking chest that will allow you to store up to 9 different objects inside. Chester will follow you as long as you keep the Eye Bone. Light: Always stay in the light. Your character will give you a warning when it is too dark ("It's so dark!", "Where did the light go?", "What was that?"). A normal campfire will disappear after running out of fuel and may set surrounding objects on fire. A fire pit will be able to be used again after the fire inside goes out. Wormholes: A wormhole is a randomly generated portal to different places in the world. Once you have used a wormhole then you can use the wormhole again to get back. Using a wormhole can significantly decrease your sanity. Food: Most food types will spoil overtime and turn into Rot except for Honey and other food types. Rot can be used for fertiliser and as a crafting component. Once food has been cooked it will spoil faster Pigs, Guardians and Werepigs: Pigs are natives and are your friends. DO NOT ATTACK. They are peaceful and will protect you, until you hit them, then they will not rest until they hand you over their fireplace. If pigs ever start fighting something then stay close, either they will die or what ever they were fighting will die. So stay close to pick up anything. Guardians are like Pigs but constantly aggressive towards anybody that goes near their camp or shrine. Rabbits: You can place a trap near a rabbit hole and wait for a rabbit to come out (they come out a few minutes after the start of a new day and sleep in their holes at dusk). Once a rabbit appears you can run behind it to make it run away from you and towards your trap. Magic: You will not need to worry about this now. It will become more relevant after around an in game year. Don't Starve Together!: Remember that if you want to play this with another then get Don't Starve Together. It can also be played alone and still has more content than regular Don't Starve. I will add more to this list as you come across something new.
I love don't starve XD tip: you can use pinecones for fuel freeing up logs for other things i.e. the log suit, you can also plant pinecones around your base to grow trees. You need gold from gold rocks to make a science machine for more crafting options, get as much done as you can before next season.
Don’t forget about *Don’t Starve Together* , which is a co-op version of the game; you could do that with Claire for a livestream!
He should! That would be hilarious.
Yesss! I just commented the same before finding your comment :P
Oh my god. That would be amazing. I give it 15 minutes.
Yes, I bet Claire would be more sensible and they'd live a good while...well probably...
Shipwrecked>DST
This is going to hurt so much to watch, truly a pleasure Jon.
Goat Bot well this game is a learning process at first, you either have to die a lot or you have to read the wiki, just for figuring things up,
I'm reading the wiki as he plays lol.
Maybe I'm just pathetic when it comes to survival games, but I treated this game like Minecraft, looking up everything.
That's fine but the game is at its best when you just experiment and find out what everything does through trial and error. It's good to have direction like to know when to build all of the devices to make the next thing but it's a fun game to just learn what everything is through experience I'd say
"I need something that'll give me health" Standing next to a spiders gland.
I feel like with Jon’s lack of perception this is not going to end well
You say that like it normally doesn't
If Jon makes a playthrough out of this (which I really hope he does, as this game is probably one of the best Tim-Burton styled games out there) I'm almost certain that he will die from sanity-related issues at least a couple of times.
Jon's not really known for min/maxing things or paying attention to seemingly minute things. :P
I have no idea what that is and i have never seen it "literally inches away from him"
"ive neve rseen one before" as he is literally standing five feet from one.
"Very concerned by the lack of stone" he says in the exact moment he's picking up a stone. Perception -1 lives on!
It's not stone it's flint, you use flint to make the tools not fucking stone.
and the spider gland
He was surprised to learn that he had it no less! He didn't even know how he got it.
Nightfly What's the meme with Jon's perception?
The President let's just say he's bad at noticing things, everything dare I say
I'd like to see more!
+
i'd like to see him play the long dark. if he thinks fallout 4s survival was rough he's seen nothing yet!
I'd enjoyu a live stream, too, since then we could give advice and maybe unlock the next level!
I apologise to all the don't starve fans out there, Jon is innocent...
"I need one of whatever that is.. but I have NEVER seen it before" the spider gland was literally on screen on the ground right next to him. ahhhh
MOAR please
Oh my God dontstarve yes
GET THE EYE BONE YOU NEED IT
Oh I never clicked a video so fast.
The DLC's are fantastic, also the multiplayer is a blast. Hint hint.
Podcats plays don't starve together... just imagine Dan with a fire wand
but he's got nothing on Jon: Jon can set snow aflame
All's well that's Maxwell.
Minimax well
YES! Bring it back! Live stream, series, both. We we haven't even got to see you pick up poo or find out what happens if your sanity falls too far or anything. You must give us more.
Yes! Live stream! Or more episodes please!
Ah, Don't Starve! A game where all of Jon's past ineptitudes will come back to haunt him!
PLAY THIS MOOOOOOOOOORE
Well, you lasted longer than I expected. That's something. I would definitely watch more of this.
One more vote for a Don't Starve livestream! Seems like a good match for the channel!
You have to do more of this! Do it for Charlie!
And I'm so sad you didn't pick up the eyebone. Eyebone makes everything better.
Btw don't starve mushrooms explaned are
Red = bad = poisones
Green = cook it = good for sanity
Blue = raw = good for health
Thank you, Jon! As a massive fan, it was delightful to watch you play thru this!
Yes Jon, this would be an amazing livestream!
4 carrots 2 berries - I've got no food, I've got NO food and my trap has failed.
I've no idea what that is, and I've never seen it before. - looks an awful lot like that thing that's right under the icon.
Don't Starve has Jon written all over it, it is strange that he's taken so long to play it!
Its kinda fun, love the art style and humour.
if you pick up the eye bone you get chester which is a chest that walks around with you
Jon definitely play this! It's such a fun game with a lot of depth and it would be awesome to see you play it. But use "M" to open the map!
I would love to see more of this! Make a let's play out of it!
"Sappling, a good source of.....wood!" Saplings are the worst for tinder! Young green trees, don't. burn well Jon!
Irony is repeatedly stating the night is scary, and then dieing to the night when fire is available
Yes please! Livestream of Don't Starve! Also, few points.

This game makes a great series as long as you have a good eye for detail and good awareness of your surroundings.
so no, dont.
I'd like to see you play more! This game really gets your hooks into you as you start piecing the systems together
This would definitely be awesome to see more of, and a live stream would be really cool
Yes! bring it back! You barely seen any of the game, it changes so much as you unlock more characters and understand it a bit more. For instance for that salve I think you needed ash, so basically burn things with a torch or lighter. There are big buffalo/cow things that poop so you can collect that for fertilizer also.

I'd like to see him play this again once he understands it a bit better. Bonus points if he plays with someone else.
Please play this, just remember that you have a map.
I wanna see more of this and the Viking game when it releases
I want to see him play the long dark it's a VERY challenging survival game. If he thinks fallout 4 frost is brutal he's got another thing coming
More! Please much more! Absolutely Love your work and this game so all Win!
This hurts to watch jon
Yes. Just Yes.

It's rewarding to watch someone play their first impressions with a game. You go, Jon!
Also, the Nitre is fool's gold.
Would totally love to see more of this! I love don't starve. Highly recommend doing a bit of wiki reading so you get to feel less confused ❤️
I would like more
Having only known about Don't Starve peripherally, I'm pretty excited for this one, especially if it turns into a series. Thanks Jon.
Yes more Don't starve please!
I actually fell in love with this channel after Fallout New Vegas Don’t Starve. It’s funny to think this is your first time playing this all these years later!
**Picks up to rocks** “I need to find rocks.” **opens crafting menu** “When did I get rocks?!” God, Jon, you’re incredibly blind. Never change.
A series or live stream of this would be great! Don't Starve is such a good game, though Jon's infamous perception may make things troublesome :p

I would like to continue watching this as a series. Very enjoyable to watch.
More more more! I’ve been wanting you to play this for so long
make it a series!
More
I immediately thought this would be good for a live stream! Please do it Jon!
please Jon. more of this. it has been quite the ride seeing you struggle with one of the most frustrating games ever :) and you havent even messed around with the Reign of Giants DLC or the Shipwrecked DLC :)
Jon you dont need to keep the fire going during the day for a fire pit. You can fuel it when it goes out to light it back up again.
Love how focused how
Jon is on picking flowers, the least valuable thing for him at this point
It does erks me that Jon is putting fuel to the fire during the day. Use your brain Jon.
I'm very interested in seeing more! I've been playing Don't Starved for years. Love to reimagine my early failings through your own. BTW The fire pit doesn't go away when the fire goes out.
Jon you have a map how did you never use the map???
-1m perception
Not that I blame him because he didn't know what it was but... AHH CHESTER WAS RIGHT THERE!!!!
Some quick tips, because I would love to see you play again:
Multiplayer! Multiplayer is great! Don't starve... together! :D
Just run from enemies until you at least have a spear and wood armor. (Grass armor is a huge waste of grass.)
Almost everything living has the potential to be hostile. Anything that seems great will eventually turn on you. (Except Chester, chester is only great.)
Generally don't ignore new things you have not seen before and can pick up or interact with.
Atleast survive a full year, then complete adventure mode.
love to see more bring it back!
pls ... more!!!
Oh, excellent! Great choice for some play-through.
Thank you for playing my favorite game, it’s going to be hard to watch! Good luck Jon!
also MOAR!!!!
oh yeah i would definitely like to see as a series or livestream
A big tip, don't pick flowers, they spawn butterflies which can be eaten to restore 8 health each.
Also, never build campfires, build torches so you can continue to explore through the night, and to save torch durability, keep the torch unequipped until you hear the noise of Charlie, then equip/unequip quickly.
YES! WE WANT A LIVESTREAM OF THIS!
so good, hope its a new series
Here is a "short" guide for your first few days in DST.
Maps:
Press M to open/close your map
Your map will be filled in as you explore.
Eye Bone:
The Eye Bone will summon Chester. Chester is a walking chest that will allow you to store up to 9 different objects inside. Chester will follow you as long as you keep the Eye Bone.
Light:
Always stay in the light. Your character will give you a warning when it is too dark ("It's so dark!", "Where did the light go?", "What was that?"). A normal campfire will disappear after running out of fuel and may set surrounding objects on fire. A fire pit will be able to be used again after the fire inside goes out.
Wormholes:
A wormhole is a randomly generated portal to different places in the world. Once you have used a wormhole then you can use the wormhole again to get back. Using a wormhole can significantly decrease your sanity.
Food:
Most food types will spoil overtime and turn into Rot except for Honey and other food types. Rot can be used for fertiliser and as a crafting component. Once food has been cooked it will spoil faster
Pigs, Guardians and Werepigs:
Pigs are natives and are your friends.
Rabbits:
You can place a trap near a rabbit hole and wait for a rabbit to come out (they come out a few minutes after the start of a new day and sleep in their holes at dusk). Once a rabbit appears you can run behind it to make it run away from you and towards your trap.
Magic:
You will not need to worry about this now. It will become more relevant after around an in game year.
Don't Starve Together!:
Remember that if you want to play this with another then get Don't Starve Together. It can also be played alone and still has more content than regular Don't Starve.
I will add more to this list as you come across something new.
Please more john! I love this game and watching you play is halarious fun
Oh shit it's a game I know for once
I get to feel the lack of perception this time!
If you make it a livestream thing, pls, upload the stream to youtube
For reference if you pick up the eyebone you get a companion called chester who as the name suggests is a walking chest
Well this is a pleasant surprise
"This is an old classic that totally passed me by" is the new "I've had my eye on this one for a while".
Please make this a series!
I love don't starve XD tip: you can use pinecones for fuel freeing up logs for other things i.e. the log suit, you can also plant pinecones around your base to grow trees. You need gold from gold rocks to make a science machine for more crafting options, get as much done as you can before next season.
"I don't know what those are and I've never seen them before" says Jon, standing 5 feet from the spider gland he claims to have never seen before.
lol at Jon ignoring Chester's eye bone after talking about how much he needs a chest
I'd watch that livestream!
I'm looking forward to you playing this a whole heap please! (It can be useful to look at the map!)
The eye bone make's a friendly mob named chester he's a molble chest
I would like to see more of this!
more!
