  • Finch's are delivering a unit load of straw which I ordered a couple of weeks ago as I was running out of feed fast.
    I've never brought straw before and it's come all the way from Canterbury which doesn't make it cheap but I think its the best feed for my situation

    You should have put a couple bales on your back spikes,anything helps for balance.
    The bales are ryegrass straw,a by product of harvesting grass seed.
    Rye is a straw by product of harvesting ryecorn.

    Hi Andrew as always a great informative video. Just wondering what time should i turn up for the steaks on the bbq 😂. You most welcome to our canterbury rocks as they say sharing is caring 😉. Yes the bales are a cost to get there but at the end of the day money well spent to reduce other issues with the cows. Can i suggest using the bales likely to get wet first

    A good tip with the straw bales is to cut the strings at the knot. That way you can pull them out easily and not snag the knot all the way.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely giving that a go! Thanks

    • @boothienz8021

      And having that knot at the end makes it far easy to use when you need a piece of string

      @gerryoconnor8751 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, definitely easier that way, and easier still if you put the bale on its edge.

    You may find there is still feed available in Canterbury you could buy directly from the baling contractors. Some of it will still be stacked on farm so you would avoid paying for double or triple handling.

    that cow 72 with the horns you can remove them putting castrating rings on them close to the head not sure if there are restrictions in nz doing it but works well takes around 1 month to fall off and they dont bleed much

    The royalties we pay in Canterbury for ryegrass straw ia defiantly starting get out of hand. With increasing costs for baling along with high royalties I can see people moving off straw if they can 😢

    If you load bale on it’s side you don’t have to drag strings thru, just cut and walk around it. Just have to have it sitting nice so it doesn’t fall off side. They do 8 string 750-800 kg Lucerne bales over here in Aust. Ya know when ya got them on the FEL.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A guy over here on TH-cam grew some forage rye this year to cut for round bale haylage for his beef suckler heard it was 6ft high when he cut it and so thick the mower only just went through it
    He also had herbal leys and between the two he had an enormous crop of over a 1000 round bales off his first cut

    Very interesting video.. I guess the straw/hay comes across Cook Strait on the inter-island ferries or is there a dedicated ferry for such large loads and semi’s?

    • @alanb9337
      @alanb9337 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the hay/ straw between the NI & SI is usually brought across on curtain-sider truck and trailers on the ferries. Hay/ straw has to be well tarped if on an open deck truck. Bluebridge rules- "Hay and straw must be booked through our Freight team on approved sailings only." Towed barges have been used at times of drought to shift hay between islands. (Jim Barker- Freightlines/ Otorohanga & Strait Shipping, was one of the people who made the between-island 'on-truck' ag-product trade more common)
