- During JoSAA counselling, while filling in the choices of various Departments students have to rely on scattered bits of information, hearsay and sometimes even guesswork. It would be much better if they can base their options on some reliable information from trusted sources.
What source could be more trustworthy than the Professors themselves of the various Departments!
In this video, I sit down for a discussion with a faculty member from the Department of Physics so that students can find comprehensive information about this Department.
The interview is with Prof. Nirmalya Kajuri from the Department of Physics at IIT Mandi.
The following questions are discussed:
What are the broad areas within Physics?
What are the differences between the Physics degree and the Engineering Physics degree?
Can you give us an idea of the important/fundamental courses that are taught?
How important is mathematics for Physics?
How heavy is the course load? Does it leave time for extra-curricular or co-curriculuar activities (like learning programming)
What kind of core jobs are there? Are these available in India?
To what extent do you envisage the future of Physics and Engineering Physics being impacted by AI? (Not in terms of research but in terms of requirements of engineers from this Department)
What kind of skills, expertise do you think engineers from this Department would need to develop beyond their core skills?
What are the things to keep in mind for those students who would be joining Physics?

I graduated with an Engineering Physics degree from NIT Agartala last month, and I would definitely say that the diversity of coursework in the EP program is very appealing!
We had a good mix of math, physics, analytical chemistry, materials science, numerical methods, programming, semiconductor physics and economics, apart from electives. For someone who's interested, there are ample online resources to study these exciting topics, and honestly, one's curiosity will only grow with time.
Despite a small batch size of 20-25, and the program being only 11 years old, our alumni (who were indeed motivated) are well placed in their careers both in academia and in corporate houses. I personally know many seniors who have gone into core engineering programs (like, EE, ME, AE, MSE) for their M. Tech. or PhD degree following their B. Tech. in EP, because during the undergraduate program, they discovered their 'calling'.
I certainly believe that EP in IITs would offer far more academic prospects than I had at NIT-A.
Anyways, it was great to see Prof. Chakraborty and Prof. Kajuri together in one frame :)
The session was spot on!
Thanks a lot for sharing this information. I am pinning your comment.
I am also interested in physics but my family wants me to do cse in nit and get a good job , thus can you please tell the placement data of EP and also in which company (IT or core ) , as I am not able to find this clearly in internet.

Please also video on energy engineering
Sir please make video on production and industrial engineering
Please Reply
Respected Sir
I am looking forward to pursue a dual degree with Btech in Engineering Physics and MS in Astronomy and Astrophysics from IIST Trivandrum. Will this degree help me in building my career in space science?
Since pure science research has limited scope in India and pays little that's why I am opting for this course since it also has Engineering with it.
Also what do you think is the better option here? Doing this dual degree from IIST or going for Btech in mechanical engineering and then Mtech in aerospace engineering from IITs?
Sir pls give guidance about IIPE
thank u sir for considering my comment
Sir could you review Chemistry department next?
Sir can you please make one about EEE, its present in many NITs. And loved this video ❤
Sir please make a video on production engineering it'll be very helpful
Thank you so much sir, this helped me a lot. Because I have my first priority to IIT Roorkee Engg Phy on my current rank. Thanks a lot.

Sir, I know this is unrelated to the video but can you please advise me wether I should Choose top 3 NITs or BITS Pilani? (Assume that will go for electronics in either college if that is important)
also, Thanks for making such useful videos!
Go for BITS Pilani if no fees constraints

BS in physics or Engineering physics
Please answer sir I am really confused.
I want to do research in physics.
A much needed session was this only sir.
I want to pursue in physics just want more reviews from various resources and here is one of them.
Extremely wonderful video!! I am a first year student of Physics Department, IIT Kharagpur. Even though I am quite aware about the coursework of Physics in my college, it's magnificent to verify my knowledge from a professor. Thank you Prof. Chakraborty and Prof. Kajuri for your valuable time in enlightening the minds of future aspiring physicists and engineers! ❤
All the best for 2nd year onwards!
Hello sir, I'm a 12th pass student this year and I'm getting BS physics in kharagpur.. can you please elaborate on your experience? I'm not really looking for research or a lecturer job but I do like physics.. how are the industrial opportunities after taking a bs degree?
@@Prof_JC Thank you so much sir.
@@abhhayssharma7461 Actually, about the industrial opportunities, I don't have much knowledge. I am interested in research and want to become a faculty of Astrophysics in a reputed university. I think whatever Prof. Kajuri has told regarding the industrial outlook of Physics, it is sufficient!
@@souradeepchakraborty9258 okay I see thank you for your time 🙏
My 2 cents on this being an IIT DEP student:
Deep Learning in Physics doesnt have a direct use case but DL models are widely used in finding Hamiltonian of complex systems. Hamiltonian is an imprtant function that allows to find dynamics of the system.
This is more towards applied mech side but EP guys can work here. Several GNNS are trained to accuarately find Hamiltonian of Quantum and complex classical systems.
Second use case is in high energy physics. Data sets from CERN is analyzed using regression models. I dont know the exact details of it though as I have very limited knowledge of High energy phy.
How to study EP?
Studying EP should be done to maximize employabilty. We study lot of linear algebra. (study it very well) Linear algebra is very imp for ML and AI. So while studying LA, pick up libraries like NumPy, tensorFlow.
When studying Probability/ Statistical phy, pick up learning about probability models and stochastic processes. This is extremely useful in quant/finance. In fact Black Scholes eqn was solved by physicists as it was similar to the brownian motion.
Though EP has very less direct employability, (unlike CS). One can be smart and pick up practical skills along with their curriculum.
Very good points.
I am student of engineering physics at nit hamirpur and I would highly recommend to students to not even consider this branch for admission. The career scope has limited career scope and is much hard in terms of curriculum. And so it is recommend to go for B Sc physics rather than ep.placements are negligible and jobs offered are from coaching institutes.
I was also thinking to take this branch after seeing the video. But because of your comment I went and saw its scope on google, and yes, the scope is very limited
..
Nit Hamirpur that is why lol
It's only for physics passionate students not for money launderers
Sir please also make such a session on mettalurgy department
Also sir a big thank you
These sessions are Pure Gems
Wish granted I guess

Sir ,Please share some information regarding B Arch at IIT bcz very less information is available online
if you need to enter research after btech from Nit, which would be more usefull metallurgical and materials engineering or chemical engneering ...your comment would really help...thanks a lot!
Sir I will get EEE in bits goa and CS in nirma university (reputed college in Gujarat). So which should I prefer??
Is this Ep course combination of Electrical & physics...?
Sir please make on energy engineering... Its a new branch and I'm not able to get any good resource to get info about it
Hello sir...could you please throw some light on the difference between "materials science engneering" and "metullurgical and materials engneering"
Comparitevely in which stream, is more maths comming in? - i)integrated 5 years from iit/nit or ii)engneering physics
Sir thoraa pure science k barein mein b vdo banaye 😂 .
Engineering aur Pure science donon mei sayy konsa choose karu samaj nhi Aaaraha .
😂
Thankyou so much for this video... I wish do go for research after btech...is engeneering physics a good choice in that case...I would most probably get Engneering physics at Nit calicut (if you could please comment/or gather info exclusively about Ep at calicut if you have any , that would help a lot)
If you are really interested in research after graduation, that too in pure science, then go for IISER's.
Actually the fact is that nothing can run in the world without an intuitive application of mathematics. Either it's engineering or medicine or so on.
Sir please make video on instrumentation and electronics engineering.
Sir metallurgical and material science please 🙏
I have uploaded the video: th-cam.com/video/ZZeEk1J_MTA/w-d-xo.html
Can you please tell all IIT’s offer or follow same course pattern and subjects for Engineering Physics?
No, each one has their own curriculum. There may be slight variations in the curriculum, for example, IITM's EP curriculum leans a bit more towards electrical/electronics side compared to IITD's EP curriculum which slightly more physics-heavy

SIR I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO ABOUT STUDYING MATHEMATICS BUT DIDN'T UNDERSTAND CLEARLY WHAT YOU MEANT BY BREAKING SYMMETRY IN THE PROBLEMS AND SEEING WHAT HAPPENS. IT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL IF YOU DEMONSTRATE THIS WITH ONE OR TWO EXAMPLES. I HAD COMMENTED ABOUT THIS IN YOUR PREVIOUS VIDEOS BUT YOU WERE NOT REPLYING TO ME. PLEASE REPLY SIR.

Consider cyclic symmetry in some algebra problem like ab + bc + ca ... suppose as part of a larger problem one of the terms is missing or some term is such that it no longer makes the expression cyclically symmetric then what happens. Again in another situation ... more relevant for physical problems ... suppose there is some kind of a balance between two sides ... now suppose you change the values so that the balance is broken ... then what happens to the overall problem? It is these kinds of things that I meant by breaking the symmetry.

Need to be more open-ended in the questions and esp the answers. It is more to answer the unasked questions.
Students require examples/applications or the kind of work, day to day activities they would be doing rather than just academic terms.
Good suggestion. But for that we need to have discussions with practising engineers.
