Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Floor can sing anything, masterfully, she claims she is not sure if she can do French Rap, but I think she probably could pull it off flawlessly. She recently sang the Dutch phone book, and it was incredible. 🤘😍
Give her a couple of hours to work on it (French rap) , and she would likely NAIL it.
She kind of raps in this song and she does it flawlessly and in german!

I actually posted that video on FB. She’s really an incredible performer, very versatile, from a Sweet pure voice to growling, with head voice, chest voice and many mixes in between the two extremes. Let’s not forget the band, great artists with Tuomas as a genius composer.

Yes, Floor has a voice that can heal the most broken soul...so incredibly beautiful and powerful. Nightwish really is an incredible band. Tuomas Holopainen on keys is the composer and writes nearly all the music. They call him the Maestro :D

Welcome to the world on symphonic metal and Nightwish. Floor is the 3rd and current lead singer. She was only with the band about 10 months here, having taken over mid tour.
Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) writes 90-95% of the songs, including the orchestral backing track recorded with the London Philharmonic.
This is only a fraction of what she , and the band, can do.
Recently , Floor was diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent surgery, is now cancer free ,and back on tour.
Wacken Open Air in Germany holds a metal festival every year. Nightwish headlined here in 2013 in front of 82k fans. This song was #13 in a 15 song set, and they brought that energy for every song.
Look for the comment from Gabriel Bardac for more info and links to a lot of their songs.
Should you choose to continue with this band, I recommend Romanticide from this same show. Btw, live is usually the way to go with them, they excel at it.

Pip Williams - an outside specialist - does the orchestrations. That's usually the case when rock bands use orchestras. Hiring that many union musicians costs so much that it's foolish to not engage a trained professional, who can get all the details right and avoid awkward passages. Even movie and Broadway composers usually do it that way.

Song 13 of 15 at this concert in front of 82,000 and Floor Jansen nails every one although all written for the previous two singers, one operatic, Tarja, followed by one quite poppy, Anette. She had only been with Nightwish for 10 months after joining them mid-tour and having only 2 days to learn the setlist before the first concert in Seattle in late 2012.
Saw her second performance with Nightwish, in Portland, and she absolutely OWNED the stage and the material. Pretty much all the fans were hoping that she'd stay on, and she did.

Yup, you have now met the most versatile singer in the world. She can do anything from death growls to full opera, from the smallest sensitive vocals to the wildest and biggest notes you've come across. Nightwish is quite versatile because Tuomas likes to push his bands capabilities.
Kudos to the cameraman who eased up to Floor's extended hand as she ended "The Note"...I think that bit of cinematography enhaced the show.

(Showtime/Storytime DVD) This. GLS, was #13. Also the iconic song that many are first introduced to the band with. Floor's voice... YES. This song is always performed towards the end of a show and there are some where she belts it all the way through before it. No strain, no fatigue, no nothing. Her movements when she sings are something as well. I don't know how much of it is rehearsed and how much just comes naturally, but she absolutely owns the stage.
By the way, the "e" at the end of Martine's name is not a decoration like most letters in English are, it's actually pronounced. But I'm sure she's used to it.😂

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 English is a mashup of five or six European (mostly) languages - each with its own rules for spelling and pronunciation - and it's just full of odd exceptions where a word originates from one language, gets pronounced with the rules from another, and is spelled with the rules from a third.
I love watching people discover my favorite band. I personally think that "Yours is an Empty Hope" is a good follow-up because it allows Floor to showcase an entirely different set of vocal abilities.
I would also encourage you to check out Floor's neighbor and often behind the scenes youtube collaborator, Tommy Johansson: either one of his weekly covers on youtube or an original song from his band, Majestica. If you're watching in December, Majestica's "Ghost of Christmas Past" has some interesting stuff going on vocally while their "Ghost of Marely" music video is visually stunning. At any other time of the year, you can't go wrong with "Above the Sky."
When dissecting Floors techniques...you will never have to say how she should have done it. It's just a marathon of how she did it.
But she has more then this in her repertoire. So keep investigating. And most important of all...just enjoy.
Because most of us has seen her performances MANY TIMES before and we just enjoy seeing you get to experience Nightwish and what they bring you.

Funny you mention Ann Wilson. I think Floor was coached for a short time by Ann Wilson, long ago. She also did short time Dutch music university , Dutch Rock academy (with focus on musical theatre, for stage presence) and she has loads of experience, heading bands since 16 years old (After Forever and Revamp). First time on Dutch TV was in 2002 I believe (21 years old). She recently started a solo project besides Nightwish.
I must have heard this song hundreds of times, and it still fascinates me,
how she can draw me in after all these years.

Nightwish Army New York here welcome 👋 another epic full range song, both from Floor and the band is "the poet and the pendulum" if you do decide to react to it, it pays to do a little research on the song and it's meaning. You have barely touched the surface of what Floor can do...and what the band can do. Every song is distinctly different yet when you hear it you automatically say "that's Nightwish"
Hopefully you will continue your journey into Nightwish...and if you do, Gabriel's list is a good one to use to decide what you will listen to next. Though it's not a complete list. There are some fantastic songs that are not on his list. That's not a failing on his part, it is simply because this band really and truly has SO VERY MANY fantastic songs that you can't include them all in a list. So if you do continue the Nightwish journey, don't be afraid to go on or off the list. I don't think you will be disappointed with ANY of their songs!

The reference to Amy Lee is heard more. So yeah, Floor can do a bit of Amy Lee, though I very much doubt that applies vice versa..
As for comparing Floor to one of the Wilson’s of Heart: Floor has done a really great rendition of Alone, where she’s only accompanied by piano. That’s a real treat if you want to hear some of her qualities without too much music drowing out her voice (as if any kind of music could..!)
As an addendum I would say that "How's the Heart" at Planet Rock is another good example where the focus is on her voice.
There she is only accompanied by an acoustic guitar.

Also, being a vocal coach it would easy for you to concentrate only on the vocals but you recognised the importance and skill of the rest of the band.

Was incredibly happy with this reaction. Finally a reaction that isnt ruined by constant hammering on the pause button. After the song was over, I was prepared to comment that this might've been the best reaction I've seen in quite a while. Buuuut.... then one name in particular left your lips, which ruined the perfect score. The Amy Lee - comparison. It's common to see, especially americans actually, to say things like "oh made me think of Amy Lee..blah blah". No miss, just NO. Amy is a good vocalist. But she doesnt hold a candle to Floor. In a way its almost degrading to Floor, to compare her to Amy. Amy and many others for that matter, would give anything to have the RANGE that Floor has.
As you hopefully listen to more Floor, you'll never, ever, compare her to Amy again, and you'll feel the same towards people making that comparison. This, I promise you.

(just dont do the mistake another youtuber did, who intentionally brought up Amy in every Nightwish reaction he did, because he KNEW it annoyed people. Amy lee and Evanescence got inspired by some amazing other Dutch bands and singers like Anneke Giersbergen from the Gathering and In Temptation with Sharon van Adel …..they were more or less the first ladies of this genre …… funny how americans always seem to think things always originate in the US ……funny and annoying

Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

They are just European tour and just performed Floor home country Netherland in Amsterdam at Ziggo Dome two nights 2x17000 people. Set list included Nightwish version of Phantom of Opera with original Dutch Phantom Henk Poort. Hope that they release soon official video about that, fan videos already was awesome.

Juliet, I’m fairly new to the Nightwish army although at age 65, I have been a metal fan since the big-hair 80’s and now am a Nightwish addict. I have watched hundreds of reactions yet none besides you pointed out the closing gesture of the hand, steadying her stance by taking in the energy of 82K people and presenting it outward to the crowd, slowly bringing it back in then the thanks at the end as she nailed that note. I find myself putting my hand outward toward my screen at this point. Magical. Great review and reaction, thank you.

@Your Online Singing Coach: Now that you've heard Floor Jansen, I have another female singer for you to check out: Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers! Unleash the Archers is a power metal and speed metal band from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Only last year, in 2021, they won a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Unleash the Archers' 2020 album Abyss, which earned 2020 Metal Album of the Year.
Usually, most reactors start out with the song Awakening, but I'm going to suggest either the song Fate of Man from Arjen Lucassen's album Star-One, or Unleash the Archers songs Northwest Passage, Abyss, or Time Stands Still.
The other band you might like is Sabaton, which is a power metal band from Sweden that sings about military history. Given the time of year, I highly recommend Christmas Truce by Sabaton, as it is about the "Christmas Truce" of World War I in 1914. If you react to Christmas Truce, you'll get to hear Floor sing an operatic aria during the end credits, since Floor is married to Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl.

@@Saje3D : Brittney is my favorite female singer, that's why, lol. I know the songs for Apex and Abyss, and even some of the newer stuff. I've also seen all of the covers and collaborations Brittney has done, as well as UtA. Interestingly enough, unrelatedly, Brittney had a baby girl back on October 4th, which may have been why she hasn't done as much as past years. She did say that UtA was working on their next album already, so there is that.
But Brittney is my favorite singer because no matter the mood I'm in, I listen to her sing, she gives me a kind of joy that I don't get anywhere else, even with Floor. I don't know what it is, but I could be having the crappiest day, I put on Abyss, False Walls, The Coward's Way, or The Wind That Shapes The Land, and within 30 seconds, I've got a huge smile on my face. Brittney changes my mood that fast.

Ok let's forget that we've heard the words Evanescence and Amy Lee 😅. Don't get me wrong Evanescence is a great band. But Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish is one of the greatest composers out there and Floor.... She is the G.O.A.T. Head voice, Chest voice, Mixed voice, rasp voice, growling, belting, opera, rock, metal, pop... you name it. I hope this is a start of a beautiful Nightwish journey. When i was 13 in late 70´s i started to listen music starting with finnish artist and from there to Heavy Metal like AC/DC, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Slade, and so on. I have always liked melodic rock or metal, music that touches your soul. I can say with confidence that music from Nightwish is best music i have heard in my 58 year life. Their music it is not only music, it is a experience. And your reaction " Your Onlinen Singing Coach ", is one of the best i have seen.

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Floor Jansen and Nightwish! Every song seems to the equal or better than the last, all while being completely unpredictable. I recommend the entire set list from this the 2013 Wacken performance. Highlights are Storytime, Everdream, Romanticide, .... hell,, all of them, lol ...... Then there is so much to move on to..... Poet and the Pedulum, Greatest Show on Earth, etc and that's just Nightwish. Floor has a ton of solo work and covers but I'd def start with her performances on the Dutch TV production Beste Zangers...... She is a Goddess
Did you know Floor actually added the vocal part beginning with "My fall will be for you..." at the end, where it was originally intended to be all instrumental play-out, thereby improving a masterpiece every fan had known for about 8 years?.. The guys in the band must have been left mouths agape at the rehearsal and just said... "OK you do it, girl". :))

Nightwish is Finnish gift to symphonic metal music and Floor Jansen (3rd female singer and the current one) is 'God's' gift to Nightwish 🤘I absolutely love Nightwish songs. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) writes and composes these beautiful songs. He's called metal Mozart ❤ And I love Jukka's drumming and his style 🥁😎 though he had to step aside because of his imsomnia at that time. The current drummer is Kai Hahto, Jukka's good friend.

While this symphonic metal is a newer genre it has roots in late 70’s 80’s metal icons Iron Maiden whose singer Bruce Dickinson is known as The Air Raid Siren! While I prefer more blues based rock/metal mad respect where due. Same as Floor you can’t avoid talent blended with artistry
