  • This simple, but well kept church was once the spiritual home of John Winthrop, Pilgrim Father and First Governor of Massachusetts. (d. 1649), whose grandfather was lord of the manor at Groton in 1618. Winthrop led the 1630 Puritan voyage to the New World, helped found the city of Boston, and became the first governor of Massachusetts. His parents lie buried in the church.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside and lovely footpaths and walks. Also resting place of Ruth Rendell and her husband. It also has the oldest outdoor memorial dating to 1598.
It costs approximately £500 per week (£26,000 per year) to keep St Bartholomew's Church open and operational.
    Open Daily.
