CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Danny (Danny Lloyd), having been possessed by his imaginary friend, recites the word Redrum" until Wendy ("Shelley Duvall) awakes and realizes the word's meaning.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" -- or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick's eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of "redrum" as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband's behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack.

Can we just talk about for a second about how amazing this kid is? He is one of or the best child actors I've ever seen.
Tom Rebman Yup and unfortunately he gave up acting
Too bad he made only one other movie afterwards and then quit acting. He is now a biology professor at a community college in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
not really
+Agalloch Fan I wonder if his students ask him to say redrum or act out some of the scenes he was in. I would haha
+Agalloch Fan I gotta take a class with him just so I can walk up to him slowly and say redrum. Would definetly be the first student to do that right?
Fun Fact: The kid actually didn’t know it was a horror movie he just did what the producers told him to. And in every scary scary scene he wasn’t there so yea. He’s like the best kid actor
also "fun" fact: shelly was mentally abused by the director and all the other producers were told to just ignore her, so in some of the scenes she wasn't just acting.

What I now find disturbing about this scene is knowing that Jack is slowly limping upstairs with the axe.
Yeah and his saying “red rum” louder and faster is literally a security alarm.

Yeah, in hindsight it's kind of obvious. His psychic abilities have been warning him of murder since Jack got the job at the Overlook. Only for some reason his child mind has been seeing it backwards as 'red rum'
@@Starman256 I imagine if there was something wrong with a batch of red rum, and his psychic powers were warning him about that, he'd walk around saying "murder"...

+Etalex Possibly the music too. I mean it just bursts forth at that part.
+Etalex as a kid, that scene scared the shit out of me! the whole damn movie did! Especially blowjob scene
I like to think that the Shining wasn't actually malevolent, but was rather protecting Danny and his parents at first by giving Danny visions of the future. It could sense the evil presence within the hotel before they even moved in, and tried to warn them. Then, when it senses the evil beginning to consume Jack, it knows it's too late, and has to resort to possessing Danny, making him pick up a knife to fight off Jack if it comes to that. It also makes him repeat "redrum" which is "murder" backwards (obviously) to warn them that if they don't act, they will die. In short, Danny's "Shining" is protecting him and his mother by possessing Danny himself.

1:59 is such a masterful scare. I always say what makes a good scare in a horror film is the terrified reaction of the character/actor that makes the scare real. To prelude a scare with the reaction first is genius, making us terrified at the anticipation of what she is reacting to.
Great post! Yes on all counts.
So many big and smart words in this, you in collage???
I think 90% of any of the shock or terror value is in the score. It's deliberately loud and unsettling. Like someone dropping something made of glass in an arts and crafts store in the aisle next to you. But at the same time, it's basically cue cards for the audience of when to be scared. The more I think about it, the more it honestly just insults the intelligence of any audience member with substantial deductive reasoning and logical discernment.
Him and the Harvey Stephens from the original "Omen"
It's even better when you realize that you were essentially watching the scare be constructed in real time only moments prior. It was both completely unexpected and expected at the same time.
I'd be so traumatized if I ever woke up to something THAT disturbing...the way Danny was saying "Redrum" still gives me chills
Shelley Duvall was actually napping on set when this was shot, and Kubrick wanted a reaction of true fear. EDIT I am totally joking but it fits in with the other urban legends you hear about this film on particular with regard to Kubrick's harsh treatment of Ms. Duvall
@@MelancoliaI damn you got me, i was like damn her torment just didnt end

I've heard that Danny's actor had no idea he was in a horror movie.
I fail to see how that was possible with that s scene.
Danny Lloyd was led to believe that he was just acting in a drama film about a family who lives in a hotel.
Wait. How come he didn't know that this is a horror movie when he like acted a scene where Jack is chasing him, holding an axe and is about to kill him? His characted was also terrified on some scenes of the movie like when he met the creepy twins and see surreal things. Idk, I'm quite confuse. Someone pls explain it to my dumb brain.
@@freakyflutist1548 In some scenes there's a dummy, no child. In some scenes you tell the child to look scared, but don't tell him why. Children have an innocent way of looking at things, and they don't expect horror because usually all they have experienced so far in their lives has been play and being loved.

OK so I have never seen the Shining before untill today. I have always known what it was though. Im 18 years old and this movie scared me more than modern day horror films. The music and the atmosphere were just down right creepy, its so obvious to see where horror films these days get it from. Jack N was fantastic, as always. But this scene to me was the one where I genuinely said to my self "i don't like this." The boys high pich voice and intense music together makes Something so un-scary terrifying
