DT doesn't usually do a good job on these issues, but this time he really nailed it, the people signing this petition do not give a damn about free software or the GPL. If these people matter at all, then it is their mattering that is the problem. The funny thing is, Richard Stallman is woke himself, his crime is not sticking to the agenda.

Historically they throw out and shun people whom are actually intelligent such as Grigori Perelman ( Count Dankula made a fairly comprehensive about him if you feel so inclined ) . Centralisation of FOSS is largely pointless in the long term as most contributions are merely a rounding error when it comes to application efficacy .
If anything I'd argue that IQ should be based off one's ability to appreciate the complexities of a solution to a problem than mere patterns, because really we stand on the shoulder's of giants when it comes to solving legitimately hard problems rather than circle jerking around the lower echelons of the bell curve .

rms has said many stupid things over the years and he's made himself an easy target. Your reading of his idiocy is pretty funny though. Still, without him there'd be no free software movement at all. He single handedly wrote the foundational tools and utilities for a free platform in the 1980s. He brought in a lawyer to develop a free license. Without him it's unclear BSD would have ever survived the AT&T lawsuit, because he created an alternative to BSD that made the lawsuit moot. He's a weirdo. And he says things that make people cringe. But without him, you'd be running Windows right now. And if you are anyway, I'm sorry.

Definitely hit the nail on the head when bringing up compartmentalization - it's impossible for any public figure to be flawed in any non-trivial way and retain a career now. It's not like RMS has committed any particularly egregious acts, sure he's said some very distasteful things and is an all-around awkward and uncomfortable person to be around but does that have anything to do with free software? The diversity-and-inclusion crowd is also strangely silent on this, considering these are the comments of an autistic (and not as in the meme "enjoys Linux" kind of autism, but very obvious autism spectrum disorder) person that simply can't help fixating and overanalyzing on topics that others would consider faux pas.

When most people hear the word "pedophilia", they instantly finish with "is bad" and if the sentence goes on and actually investigate some nuances then people's brains just lock up in rage mode.
Stallman gave a lawyer-worthy defense there.
The word "assault" should not be used if there wasn't an actual assault and one may reasonably assume that the girl, even if underage, did in fact present herself as willing and in full ability to give consent. He did not say, that it had happened this way, or that it definitely didn't. He described a situation that could believably happen in real life.
Besides, "assault" it isn't the word of choice in many other languages, other than English, that deal with cases of underage sex, so his remark and requirement to be specific and mindful of the meaning of words is actually warranted. I wonder why is US society so crazy and over the top when it comes to sex and sexuality. There has to be an answer to that peculiarity somewhere.

Bill Cosby for example, I really didn't wanna believe the allegations when they came out because of how much I loved that guy's standup, but when it pretty much got solidified that he actually did such heinous things, it really did ruin his comedy stuff for me. Probably because of how intensely connected that work was to his personality, your perception of him. You felt like you were getting to know him, and now watching it, it feels like a sham, it completely ruins that work.
I think in the internet age where people are able to interact with the creators of their favorite things now more than ever, and artists put a lot more of themselves into work than ever before, people get that feeling they got with Cosby more than ever, and we put a higher expectation on those creators and artists to behave. Maybe that just goes to show how such parasocial relationships can be unhealthy, but it doesn't change the fact that we have larger personal connections to creators than ever before, whether those connections are real or not.
I mean hell, corporations and foundations use that parasocial feel to their advantage a lot more nowadays, look at Nintendo with Reggie. So I feel that's why the FSF has such an issue with such comments, because it really messes with the "face" of their foundation which is much more important nowadays than it ever has been. Which is really stupid and I can't stand it honestly, but that's just the way society is going I guess. I do think ruining someone's career over things they said is really silly and doesn't compare to something on the level of Cosby's allegations.

I find it interesting that the people so much into cancelling people are so focused on social ostracism. It makes me wonder whether the people interested in cancelling people are themselves terrified by the idea of being thrown out of a group or tribe - like it is a form of projection.
I never tried to be a rebel. I never woke up and said, "Man I'm gonna be a loner." It just happened, possibly because I am just socially maladroit. Or it happened because I can't pretend to believe in things, or engage in social customs which don't come naturally, or because I'm an asshole or deficient in some way. I never made some brave decision to not give a shit what people think. It's just that I don't. Maybe it's misanthropy. Or maybe it's because, unlike Stallman, I have nothing to lose by being kicked to the curb, freedom bein' just another word for nothin' left to lose and all that.
I've just never wanted to be part of a movement. I've never wanted to be part of a tribe. I never want to be in a room with people who all agree with me, or look like me. The obligations outweigh the putative benefits. And when people think, "Well, we cancel someone, and then either they reform, or else we scare the piss out of people who might agree with that person to toe the line," all I see are weak human beings who feel some kind of sick frisson of power by joining in with a mob, who themselves imagine ostracism to be a kind of social death penalty.
I'm not saying being kicked out off the bus is always pleasant or that everyone can shrug when it happens.
I am saying that there is an odd sense, that when I turn off whatever screen I'm looking at, all of the world beyond the room I'm in has the uncanny sense of ceasing to exist.

Censorship and canceling need to become unacceptable. Stallman discussed uncomfortable ideas. They need discussion, even if uncomfortable. Simply sweeping all discussions about pedophilia under the rug, for example, doesn't make pedophilia go away and doesn't help us understand and manage it properly. It's not something that will ever suddenly be gone from humanity forever. It has to be dealt with, and sticking one's head in the sand serves no one well. And sure, some of the stuff he talked about is technical and perhaps a strange choice of focus, but it's absolutely nuts to crucify him for that. It seems to me, particularly with highly emotional subjects, that most people are simply not capable of even thinking about them without succumbing to a fear response that shuts down their ability to think critically.
Stallman has a long history of trying to understand and decode society. He is a human full of flaws like all of us. He does us all a service by digging into these things and trying to figure them out. In a just society, he would be perfectly free to say the things that he said without repercussions. We do not live in a just society; we live in an increasingly hostile, fearful, hateful society that punishes disproportionately for even the smallest infringement.
We basically are the main character in Love Hina. Every time we slip, we get punched into the next tow over.

Not every opinion is of equal weight, therefore the response has to be proportional. So the screeching response from cancer culture has been way over the top.

I don’t think coercion is the only aspect. A fully consenting child should still not be able to give legal consent for sexual acts because they’re often not yet old enough to take responsibility for such an action. Now obviously setting a hard age limit for this is going to be an imperfect measure, a few mentally immature individuals will probably exist above that limit, and mentally mature individuals will definitely exist below it, but it’s still better than not. Where you want to set that limit is basically subjective.
As for animals, no animal’s mental maturity can even be compared with that of a human, unless you want to get freaky with dolphins.

Out of 28 feminine names on the list with "contributor", "developer", or "engineer" in their signature, 12 are confirmed transgender, 7 are confirmed female, and 9 of unknown sex. It was the one time he made a somewhat factual, though insensitive, statement that his resignation was demanded. Also the open letter demanding his resignation is total gaslighting. All those degeneracies the sponsors of that letter support, Stallman supports as well.
