PURE PR122 is very lightfast. Its the florescent dye that fades. Not every brand will even put the dye # on the tube. When you test the paint full strength it never fades all that much. But its the gradient wash where the color is glazed on lighter that it changes the most. It takes at least 6 months to notice the difference. I love Holbein because I love the soft warmer pink left behind. I did that one for 8 months. The PR122 pigment left behind doesn't fade. Its only the florescent dye that vanishes. Thanks for sharing this. I loved seeing it!

Thank you so much Renee for sharing your knowledge of watercolor with me and others here on my channel. It's so interesting and fun to explore different colors, pigments and their properties. I agree with you that the fading of the PR122 especially in the Holbein brand is negligible. It really only is the florescent dye that fades away, and it does not make much difference, so personally I have no problem using it, even in paintings I plan to exhibit and sell. Of course, everyone has to make their own decisions on what colors they like and feel comfortable with. 🎨

Thank you for doing that .
I just bought a tube of w/n opera pink. I really love the color and some one else I know LOVES that paint.

Thank you so much for your comment Cathy! I hope you have a lot fun painting with your new Opera Rose - I have several watercolor videos where I use it, so enjoy! Here's a link to painting Peach Blossoms using Opera Rose: th-cam.com/video/9eudEjZCzMM/w-d-xo.html

I can’t even tell you how grateful I am for you doing this video!!! Opera is one of my favorite colors but I have been avoiding it due to the lightfast ratings. Thanks to you I can use and enjoy it once again! Oh thank you so much!!! I have some left from Winsor and Newton but also have some from Daniel Smith and Mission Gold that I will have to see about testing. Thank you a thousand times! Much Love and Respect from North Carolina, Stacy

Hi Stacy from North Carolina, thank you so much for your nice comment - I figured I would not be the only Opera Rose lover out there in the watercolor world! I think I also have an Opera Rose from Mission Gold, so I should test that out - don't think I have one from Daniel Smith. I wanted to test out the Prussian Blue versus the Antwerp Blue, so I will add the Opera Rose from Mission Gold to that testrun. Stay tuned and keep painting!
      Hugs & Happy painting! Eva

Eva Nichols Art What a great idea, testing those blues. I think the Mission Gold is my favorite Opera because it is so pigmented and gorgeous, so I am really hoping it reacts the same as the others. I also love the oranges and purples that it creates, so your tests have truly opened up my favorite palette all over again. I will definitely, always stay tuned as I have been a fan and subscriber for quite a while now, I’m just a little shy about commenting sometimes. This time I was ready to do the happy dance along with the comment even lol. Have a beautiful evening.

Thanks for this video Eva. It is a very very interesting subject!
What puzzled me the most is that the only color containing the fluorescent pigment BV10 (Rhodamine B), which is technically highly fugitive, is the one that didn't change at all under prolonged exposure to light.

    • @EvaNichols28
      @EvaNichols28  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Exactly Paolo! However, maybe the other brands just don’t list that they contain pigment BV10, just like most brands don’t list when there is a little white in for instance so of the yellows.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment!

I was just thinking, it would be interesting to do the same test with the same paints after being sprayed with UV spray just to see how much it stops the fading. 😊

    • @EvaNichols28

Thank you so much for your comments - I agree, that would be a great test to do. I might actually try that with the two methods I use to seal my watercolors, if I don't frame under glass. Sometimes I have used UV spray and sometimes I have sealed with Dorland's Wax. It would be interesting to see, if both methods protect equally well.

    • @grammiejones77

Yes I agree. I love the Dorlands wax, I just started using it. Testing with the spray and wax would be great!

Even Though DaVinci doesn't list the florescent dye in their Opera, you know its in there. Its deceptive not to list it. Its obvious but you can always tell for certain using a black light on it. I use a black light flashlight to spot those florescent enhancers and dyes. It glows in the dark.

Since I don’t sell my paintings wasn’t that concerned with how lightfast. Only “paints” where could really see the fading were more ink based or this one set of not good watercolors (student grade). Ty.

@@EvaNichols28 I suppose as an artist I should probably advise the buyer to protect the art before they buy....I try to do that as much as possible. But It's probably unrealistic to expect people to take your advice when all they want is a nice painting to put in that spot that happens to get direct sunlight all day long....lol. 🤷
