  • The average fan probably doesn't know all the technology that is inside todays NHL Hockey Puck. But watch this video as I show x-rays and even open one up to see what's inside! From colour changing ink to Infrared LED lights - a lot has happened to the humble 6 oz puck!

    Considering how much a puck keeps getting thrashed during a game, I'm pretty sure they did what they can to make the electronic innards as close to impact/shock-proof as they can and hardened them as a single unit. Some military hardware are built like that so that it can survive just about ANYTHING.

    Wow I never knew all of that was inside a hockey puck. I caught 2 game used pucks but a long time ago. Never noticed any LED lights.

    I was in charge of PPT in Edmonton from the inaugural year until 2 weeks ago. Let me know if you still have questions. I have player tags as well.

    When do you think you will visit Seattle or Elmont to do an episode on the new arenas?
    And maybe do an update video for each arena.

    I did not expect it to be that big. I thought it would just be a tiny chip. Cool video.

    Clearly the pucks used in the OHL are a LOT cheaper and less fancy, considering how they won't change them during stoppages of play, the ref will pick up the puck off the ice and reuse it for the next faceoff

    Ultimately, why don't they rig something onto the nets so that when the puck fully crosses the line, it signals a goal? Would reduce and eliminate the goal line reviews. Otherwise, what's the use of the puck? Other than player stats, we can see the puck.

    Amazing video! Always fun to discover the niche parts of any system, but sports in particular seem to have many unexplored background technologies. It's really cool to still be learning about hockey, and the NHL, despite already feeling like an 'expert' through experiencing the game as a fan, player, and coach. Thanks for showing your unique perspective, and expertise, with the game I love. Keep up the great work. 🏒

    I get the idea of embedded sensor to track puck performance and other data, especially after the 2020 season puck quality issue. But LEDs? That's ridiculous to me.

    NFL needs to put something in the balls to fix bad spotting by the refs on every single play.

    Nhl solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. I hate watching any game there’s a tracer or skid mark following it. Now they think we need to have a box above the player to know who he is. If we watch hockey we know. People who don’t watch won’t know nor or they going to watch if they see a box with a name and a skid mark going across the screen saying 84 mph

      And have digital adds on ice, boards and glass, they move and change during play. My non Hockey friends ask how the hell I can watch a game with all that distraction.

    • @emsteph
      @emsteph 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, the name tags were extremely annoying. Haven't seen them yet this year.

    • @leatherbound4233
      @leatherbound4233 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@emsteph they are there on some games, hell I was watching a game this week, I think it was Detroit but turned it off. They had the name tags, digital moving adds on ice, boards, and glass and the digital on ice penalty clock. Then player ice times popping up plus the normal header adds at the top of the screen. I mean WTF!

    • @since_96
      @since_96 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Idk, just my perspective, but as a new fan having never played/watched hockey before it's really hard to know who to keep an eye on or easily digest the game when I'm just trying to unwind. I liked seeing the names pop-up for whoever had possession and it really didn't seem so intrusive. And the ads on the walls aren't distracting either. That red track he showed off would be annoying and pointless when replays do a better job of displaying the shot. But as for possession and name tags I'm all for it
