This is the internet's gold. Thank you, Tara! As a professional medical writer, I was teary when you get to the last point - writing is a privilege and it is important for the world. In my case, I write the regulatory documents so that patient's experiences in a clinical trial are accurately reported. These pieces of writing will perhaps never be read by the public (only for decision-makers in Health Authorities) but are essential for making a drug accessible by the public in the future.
6:19 1: Remember that few academics have been taught how to write 9:46 2: We learn to write by writing 11:55 3: Always start writing for yourself 13:39 4: Think about how you were taught writing at school, realize it was long time ago, and re-organize your strategies and behaviors 16:09 5: Write down ideas when you have them 18:22 6: Re-organize your relationship between reading and writing 19:40 7: Feel the fear and do it anyway 22:07 8: Try different modes of writing 25:21 9: Be conscious in creating your writing environment 27:11 10: Do not write to a deadline
Thank you this is so helpful, especially I will be writing my thesis up now. I was also a goth when I was at school in the 80's and secondary level education for me was also a very unpleasant experience. Hehe.
Hi Tara, This Video is so timely. I start my first year of a Degree in English Literature and will be doing a lot of Assignments. One thing i do when writing is to use a Fountain Pen as the action of writing in ink with a Nib slows me down and allows me to think about and absorb what i am writing . I also record myself when i have written a draft as i can hear it and notice how it may sound or come across to my Tutor. I know you are talking to Post Grad Students but do you have any videos on Referencing please?
I see writing as the communication of meaning. To write, read the work of the great communicators through history. I suggest the works of Shakespeare, Austin, Dickens, Macaulay, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Moliere and Chaucer.. in these you will find the inspiration to write with meaning
This video is amazing; it's so eye opening ( e.g. number 10...) Thank you!
