    Chris, WOW, My Dad..... when we lived up at Lake Tahoe , he did Bow and arrow making, he did it just like you did in this video, It brings tears to my eyes, I spent quality time with my Dad making Archery equipment. I remember Deer Hunters come to my dad with orders for arrows with their custom Paint Rings ID, so they knew whose arrow was who"s, he made everything,m Bows, Arrows, Quivers, and Arrow Points out of a thin steel, he would cut to shape and then use a sand paper and wet stone to sharpen it. I Lost my Dad last year, I miss him, but I have these memories, thank you for adding to them, Archery making is a Noble Art . OMG that was my job, Collecting pine pitch, I can smell it now !

      +Roberto Pechenino Thank you for sharing the memories of your father. It means a lot to me. I'm now wondering how you got all that pine sap off of your fingers? 😄

      Chop With Chris I think it was Turpin Tine he used on my hands, I remember after a couple of gatherings, he got me a pair of Canvas gloves to wear when I went to collect with my stick & old paint can, He would heat the pitch up on a camp stove, when the pitch got runny like honey he would pour it through a screen to clean it out then it went into a smaller can like a putty can with a sealing tin lid. When he needed it, he would put the little can on a wire stand with a candle below it and it would get liquid in about 5 minutes, he also used hot glue, I remember when it was done dry & cool, he would put a coat of Varnish on it to seal it off. Hand made by an Artisan is always the best.

    • @kana22693
      @kana22693 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could probably make a bow string out of fishing wire, hemp wick, cotton from clothes (you're gonna have to braid it for extra strength though), leather strips from jackets, linen, animal sinew...etc. Pretty much any material that's strong yet flexible.

    • @bren42069
      @bren42069 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it needs to be the opposite of flexible! The bow does all the flexing. It needs to be strong and unyielding. You can buy a spool of waxed dacron thread on Amazon and learn to weave a bow string. You can use hemp or flax etc.

    • @TheJamboian

    I love all your old tools. What a great collection. I would think the cross-grain mounting of the arrowhead would help to ensure the arrow doesn't split when the arrowhead makes contact with a target despite how securely its mounted. Over time it might slowly work it's way into a split so I can see how the cross-grain mounting would be the recommended procedure.

      Alright, I came to the point when my bow is nearly finished in shaping. I have a 14mm thickness of the limbs and I'm afraid to flex it, because I need a lot of power to do so. Will it break if I leave the thickness like this? Should I carve some more? 12mm, maybe? What power should I get from it?

    Thank you sir. I will be watching your videos over the next few months. We go camping every year as a family totally rustic camping in the woods. Even the wife deals with just a river for a bath for the better part of a week. This year's challenge is make a bow. I was successful in making one before though after I see yours mine just looked like kindling. It was a kid sized bow perfect for my son. I cheated for the wooden arrows and just bought dowels from Walmart. But that year was our year to bring the turkey to thanksgiving. We raised the turkey and I pulled a couple feathers off before butchering and u think super glued them onto the dowel. I didn't know whay else to do so I carved an arrowhead out of wood. I think I made another arrow using a lid from a soup can shaped into an arrowhead.
    Anyway!!! I was proud enough to show the guys at camp way back when and adults draw length overstressed the bow and it snapped. We are all doing it this year on our 24hr bushcraft that goes even further into the woods. I can't wait.
