Rammstein’s approach to music video appears to be _‘go big or go home.’_ Each Rammstein music video is essentially a musical short film often consisting of an extraordinary level of production.
Absolutely, and I love them for this. Too many musicians see music videos just as a necessary promotion task and are missing out, while Rammstein embrace the videos as a means to broaden the themes and messages of their songs further.
@@SmeagolTheGreat Rammstein is unquestionably unique. They strike me as being relentlessly devoted to maximizing their audience’s entertainment experience. Their video productions are some of the most evocative I have ever seen. Considering their Berlin historicity, I am not surprised that they routinely utilize elements of the German Expressionist era as is readily apparent in many of their music videos. I appreciate that they do not feel a need to resort to incessant displays of nauseating bombastic musical virtuosity. I also appreciate the fact that they have eschewed any attempt at producing music in English to satisfy mundane mainstream commercial (American) market appeal. I wish them much continued success.
Gene Simmons of KISS: „We got pyros in the show !“ Till from RAMMSTEIN: „Gene, HOLD MY BEER !“ (goes on stage and sets a man on fire with a Flamethrower)
I would very much recommend a reaction to Deutschland, which is very profound in its lyrical content and has an amazingly shot video that references all of German history. It's definitely their masterpiece, imo. Musically speaking, their work is more on the simple side, in general.
Yes, Deutschland is a masterpiece. Catchy song, probably THE best music video ever with a perfect educational character on german history and a very nice chord progression. I think I watched the video a dozen times and find something new in it everytime i watch it. The director Specter Berlin deserves an oscar for that great monument of a video.
That one needs "a bit" of homework. It's hard to really appreciate Deutschland video without rather deep grasp of German culture, history, and mentality
Hi! Till's makeup is from the cabarets of the Berlin of the roaring 20's. If you know the movie "Cabaret" then you know where his makeup is coming from (especially in the scene with the song "Welcome"). The roaring 20's had the reputation to be especially kinky and decadent with a lot of orgies, crossdressers and homosexual activities. Especially in Berlin. The rest is a mixture of Third Reich and GDR (DDR), because both dictatorships restricted the receiving of radio waves from foreign countries with foreign ideas and foreign music. If you were caught listening to foreign (enemy) radio stations in the Third Reich this could be your end. In the DDR you were thrown in prison and / or your life was ruined by the secret service (Stasi). In both states the radio was the life line of the people for listening to modern western music that was forbidden in both dictatorships. Despite of those threats the most people in the GDR watched west-TV and listened to west-radio. There was an area in the east, where no western TV and radio waves were getting to. That area was called "Tal der Ahnungslosen" (valley of the clueless) by the east Germans. The women protesting and going over the top with bare breasts and the women turning over the car were part of the women's rights movements. Then they had written on posters and their body in the 1960's & 1970's the slogan "My body belongs to me" (part of the pro abortion movement inside the womens rights movement of the 1960's and 70's). In the video they had written on posters and bodies "My Radio belongs to me". In the same women's rights direction goes the scene with the complaining man (about the food) and the woman throws him to the ground. But to be honest: I don't know, why they brought up that women's rights stuff in the context with their song about the radio. Maybe the radio helped spreading those political ideas back then, too. The music was in big parts a homage to the sound of the band "Kraftwerk" and their songs about radio waves and the radio itself (partly integrated into songs like "Autobahn"). My recommendation: The band "Kraftwerk" and their song "Autobahn". If possible, take one of the latest versions. If possible from one of their latest life events with the 3D animation of the German highway in the background. Greetings Mega 👋😇👋 PS: "fernes Weh" means literally translated "distant pain", right. But in this case it is an unusual, artistic version of the German word "Fernweh" (Wanderlust, travel nerves, travel bug, to have itchy feet). All those English expressions and words for Fernweh (even the imported German word Wanderlust) aren't catching the real meaning of "Fernweh". It isn't just the wish to travel somewhere. It's like a sweet (at the same time wistful) yearning and thinking about distant places.
A good explanation about some details of the song I met on the channel "deutsch und deutschland", which is in Brazilian Portuguese. And the issue of women's representation would be linked to the demonstration against repression in general, but taking concrete cases and direct references, such as the repression against Russian women who demonstrated naked with the body written "my body belongs to me", where in the clip the phrase is "my radio belongs to me". The woman breastfeeding the radio would be a reference to the case of the broadcaster RIAS (I think it is better to just leave the reference and not try to explain the case). This is a bad reproduction of the fabulous video "Radio de Rammstein: Posso falar ou vão me prender?", which even without understanding the language, I suggest that it be seen to have the reference images of what I am talking about and make it easier to search. And here is an opinion of mine: the scene where the woman rises beyond a reference to the demonstrations for freedom that existed in russia, would be a direct reference to the work La Liberté guidant le peuple, which would fit everything in one very clear sense and even explicit "freedom guiding the people".
You're clearly indoctrinated with propaganda from German liberals. The idea it would be ''your end'' in Nazi Germany if listening to foreign radio is plainly laughable. American music in particular was discouraged/blocked but people still played it without being ''ended''. It wasn't a random restriction of 'foreign ideas' that the Nazis were concerned with. In terms of music, it was specifically the American jazz/blues influenced music which contained a large black and ''chosen people'' component and for the time was also the most wild/hedonistic, the equivalent of current rap/hip-hop etc. in terms of moral influence on the population. This was before jazz was transformed into an elitist genre. So all the people now complaining about what's happening with music industry vice etc. and the influence on the youth aren't very far from the Nazi position in terms of cultural concerns.
Here in America, you rarely hear Rammstein, because they refused to 'play the game' all American musical acts do when it comes to paying third parties for air-time. However, they totally sell out every concert tour! In fact, they hold the world's record for fastest sold-out tour, ever, at 37 minutes!! What's even more amazing is that Rammstein doesn't allow mass-ticket sales! Each ticket has the name of the person purchased it and they're a REAL person, not scalpers or resellers! Rammstein uber allen!! I had the pleasure of seeing them when I was in Germany in the mid-90s. Achtung! Rammstein!
@@damianrehbein3992 Hi there. I took German in high school because I loved old war movies and wanted to be able to understand the Germans when they spoke. Decade and a half later ended up in Germany for three years. Not totally fluent anymore because I haven't had the opportunity to use it since the '90s, but still understand enough to follow the lyrics. And I've always liked the language because it isn't too lyrical and not as harsh as everyone believes.
@@ridetillidie8090 Well, it is not Icelandic but certanly a language on the harsher side. Good for Hardrock incredibly hard for Rapping. Was it hard to learn? I assume you are an English native. I always found it interesting how Rammstein has a large American fanbase, most of which does not understand them. Should we switch to German? Could be an opportunity to oil up the memory.
Ohne Dich is a beautiful and extremely emotional song from this band. Maybe don't review it but you'll love it even if you just keep it to a song to listen while you're by yourself.
Yes, for sure! I'm not a musician but i really like to study, and it's so good to have a person like Doug to share different and profound ideas about that kind of music.
No other band combines a unique blend of metal and techno, poetry, incisive social/political commentary, an out-of-this-world stage presence, the voice of Till Lindemann, pyrotechnics and longevity (no lineup change in almost 30 years). Welcome to Rammstein!
Exploring Rammstein will be a treat. I speak German a bit (pre-covid I travelled there about once a year or so for work), and find it useful to have the lyrics in both German and English up when I listen. Deutschland is a song that I find really lyrically powerful -- it does an amazing job conveying the "complicated" nature of German history and culture, and the mix of feelings many Germans have. For Radio, it is important to note that the members of the band all grew up in East Germany. The song conveys the importance radio had for so many Ossies --- "meine Ohren werden Augen" is a pretty autobiographical sentiment for them.
@@arnodobler1096 I was stationed in Frankfurt when the wall came down. Got there just two years after the crash at Flugtag. My family came to the US from just west of Dresden in the 1860s, nearly everyone where I grew up is German ancestry. Names like Knorr, Wiese, Stuhr, Wittfut, Hoffschieder, and other very German names are who I grew up with. I had a good time in the old country, only picked up a little more of the language, my grandparents spoke it sometimes so I could get the idea of what they were saying but couldn't reply except in English. For some reason Rammstein is my favorite band... must be the East German genetics. I never made it to where we came from, we weren't allowed yet when I left and we were kinda busy with the Gulf War. Maybe someday, I have a dear old friend near Kiel, could catch a train to Dresden... if the world doesn't go to hell.
5:45 The part with the mother breast feeding the radio is a nice play on the lyrics. He is singing "stille heimlich fernes Weh" which in context of the song means something like "secretly satisfing my longing for traveling". But "stillen" does also mean breast feeding. So they reintrepete the lyrics in another sense in the pictures. I like it.
And one would think that in So Cal, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Japanese would also be sensible choices, not to mention any of the many, many native languages that are threatened with extinction. /slightlyofftopic
@@shelleyburr3988 Well, my mother, who used to work as a German teacher before her retirement, actually used some Rammstein in her classes after I had suggested she could do so. Their pronunciation, after all, is usually crystal clear.
Man, what a world you are entering with Rammstein! There's no wrongdoing with any of there songs and their live shows are some of the most spectacular in the rock world.
Your notion about danger is fitting: this song is about the band growing up in East Germany and secretly listening to western radio stations, which was strictly forbidden.
Ich tu dir wei is my favorite, its dark lyrics but melodic. Liebe ist fur alle da is another favorite in addition to the ones you mentioned. Buch Dich is a fun one, they got in trouble for doing that one in the US. Doug might like Rosen Rot, its kinda like Radio, a bit slower but not as slow as Ohne Dich. They appeared soon after I got back from a military tour in Frankfurt, family is from the Dresden area but we been in the states a bit more than 150 years. Something about them speaks to me. Must be that East German thing.
Not gonna lie. I always thought this was more of a dud in Rammstein’s repertoire, but your breakdown of it has made me appreciate it fully. Wow. And I’m a classically trained musician too. You took me back to school and I’m glad you did!
Rammstein is pure art, a modern kind of poetry. Simple metal riffs, deep and brutal lyrics. I have a deep bond to this band. Radio is part of their newest album. I can definitely recommend the song Deutschland, which reflects on the difficult relationship between us Germans and our past. Probably one of their most political songs (alongside "Links 2 3 4", "Amerika", "Ausländer" or maybe even "Mann gegen Mann"). Many songs are about the hidden, deep desires everyone has and raise the question about where to draw the line. So it is not surprising that some of their songs are actually deeply disturbing ("Mein Teil" for example, which tells the story of a popular case of cannibalism in Germany). I could write all day, since Rammstein is probably the most complex band I know.
I love the lyrics, Till is a true poet. Even on his first Lindemann album, in English, there's so much depth and punniness in the songs. Yukon is probably my favourite 'hidden gem' on that album
True. Till is possibly the most gifted poet in contemorary music, maybe only bested by Alexander Frank Spreng ("Asp"). I would, along with many others, recommend "Deutschland", as it is a complex song, with even more complex visuals in the official video (including, but not limited to, the inclusion of Germania - a personification of Germany - as a black woman). But I would also appreciate a look at the "Schwarzer Schmetterling"-Zyklus (Black Butterfly cycle) by ASP. Asp's music is way more complex in terms of melody and tonality than Rammstein's, but serves more as a vehicle for the lyrics than the latter. By the way, the band ASP ist written in all caps, whereas the singer/songwriter of said band is called Asp. Just mentioned it, as it can be confusing. Fun fact: There is another difference, just from a writing perspective: while Asp is the main writer for ASP (and other bands have songs written by some of the members and then maybe arranged by the whole band), all Rammstein songs are put together by the lot. Whenever someone (even Till) comes up with a tune, a theme or a draft for lyrics, the whole band comes together. They won't produce any song that is not unanimously approved.
The opening was a re-enactment of the first radio music announcement. Besides that the best way to see them is going to their concerts. You'll return with a Tinnitus and charred eyebrows but got to see the best pyrotech you will ever see
Rammstein was not something i expected to see here. Im pleased :) Rammstein is one of those "secret" world famous bands, despite "newer" signing in anything but German. It really doesn't matter if you start listening to their last stuff or the old, its all good and unmistakably Rammstein. Do try to watch some of their live shows. Quite spectacular.
People see Rammstein for their awesome live shows and their banging sound, but their lyrics have always been very political and interesting. If nothing else, check out the visuals concept in Sonne, Engel or Links 2 3 4
Rammstein is unlike anything else out there. Long performing band, absolutely amazing live shows, lyrics which have always way bigger meaning then many thing. It's something amazing.
More by Rammstein please, any song by them is excellent, the vocalist writes the lyrics and is also a poet, his lyrics are simple but very forceful and sometimes very explicit, they play a lot with double meanings, it is worth delving deeper, their music is somewhat repetitive but very powerful, we are not a band that pretends to be very complex but if it is, their videos and live shows are crazy !! . Thank you for your analysis and reaction, I hope you hear more from them 🔥🔥🔥
Rammstein has been my first real introduction to metal back when I was 8 years old when theyr released Sehnsucht. One of my favorite bands of all time!
Thank you very, very much. I am a huge Rammstein fan and never thought you would do this. Also a very perceptive choice on your part as this is one of their songs that is seldom reviewed. The most popular is "Deutschland -- Official Video" which currently has 175,084,170 views, but other reviewers have found use of it gets blocked almost every time. As a big fan and since you did not know they were that popular: they are primarily known as a LIVE band, especially after their now famous 2019 tour. So here are some key facts: The Rammstein 2019 tour was the second highest grossing tour in the world of non-English language acts, behind only Korean “K-pop” band “BTS”. In Europe they were just behind Metallica and Ed Sheeran in total receipts: Sheeran; $147.63 million; Metallica $135.56 million; Rammstein; $131.26 million. Despite only playing 31 shows in Europe, for the 2019 world-wide all-languages category of “Rock Groups”, they were #3 behind only the Rolling Stones and Metallica, and in front of: Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Bon Jovi, U2, and the Eagles (in that order), and of all musical genres in all languages world wide, 4th in the world after only the above three “Rock” groups plus BTS, and world wide were ahead of: all country performers (#1 Garth Brooks $78.29 million; #2 Eric Church $70.67 million; #3 Florida Georgia Line $52.43 million, and #4 Carrie Underwood $51.86 million); all “Pop” groups (#2 Arashi $115.35 million; #3 Jonas Brothers $109.87 million; #4 Backstreet Boys $101.36 million) and all “Hip Hop” groups: (#1; Eminem $42.82 million; #2 Drake $33.88 million, etc.). Finally, the Rammstein Stadium Tour was shortlisted for the Total Productions International trade association group’s prestigious “Live Production of the Year 2020 Award”. Presented in London, England, February 24, 2020 (1,700 in attendance; Black Tie only), the annual awards event recognizes excellence in all facets of concert production, including stage design, stage lighting, sound quality, power tech, crowd security, transportation technology, as well as the managers and management companies of individual tours. The other nominees for Production of the Year were the Chemical Brothers, Marco Borsato, Muse, Stormzy, and Take That. The award was ultimately won by Stormzy, headlining “The Glastonbury Show”, June 28, 2019 (audience of approx. 135,000). Here are some quick facts about Rammstein’s tour and stage (all statistics for figures above and below are from Touringdata.Wordpress.com; // Total Productions International: TPiMagazine, at “tpimagazine.com”, November 2019 “Production Profile: Rammstein” (12 pages); // and WIcreations MotionMag, Oct. 2019: “The Rammstein Case”, p. 25-29): Total number of shows on tour: ……………………………………… 31 Total Tour Attendance: ………………………………………. 1,293,176 Average Ticket Price: ……………………………………… US $101.34 Total Reported Gross: ……………………………… US $131,259,300 Largest attendance at a single show: ……………………………72,367 (June 22, 2019, Olympiastadion, Berlin) Largest for a total of two shows, back-to-back: …121,250 (60,625 per show, June 8th & 9th, 2019, Olympiastadion, Munich, Germany). This is at th-cam.com/video/JgGuRKgvWQ4/w-d-xo.html. It has a respectable number of 10,063,739 views just on its own, as of today. The best overall videos of the 2019 Stadium concert series are by TH-cam uploader “Rammstein Live by TheKeyboardfucker”. He has done fantastic work and all Rammstein followers should congratulate him and thank him for his efforts - its some of the best multicam by a fan that I have ever seen. Personally myself, I liked "Zeig Dicht" at th-cam.com/video/bKTFBYC2XH0/w-d-xo.html; his multicam of "Deutschland" was blocked so he put it on Vimeo (TH-cam will block my comment if I include the URL). But for Doug, I would recommend the "Key-Bd-F's" multi-cam of "Ohne Dich" at th-cam.com/video/yBLd6RG-Xsk/w-d-xo.html. All Rammstein fans should agree this is one of the most beautiful videos we have ever seen of the band. I'm sure you would like it. Keep well ...
Congrats on the pretty good pronunciation of the band's name and all, Doug! Also much respect for how well-informed you are about the lyrics! Love your vids, cheers from a German TH-cam colleague! :)
I believe he should do the United Alive version, they extend it for a bit and the duo Kiske/Deris makes it more dramatic and theatrical, but any version he listens to will be a blast anyways
@@pauloviniciosappelt9789 I get your point and I really like UA version but I still prefer studio record especially for Kiske's incredible voice. He was only 19 at the time. I've got shivers every time i hear this song. :)
This was super interesting! I love hearing about the details that make the music tick that I hadn't picked up on! I hope you'll do more Rammstein songs!
Rammstein is the best live band around. All reactions should be based on their live performances. Paris and Madison Square Garden shows are a great starter.
For people still getting hyped if a fire is burning, sure. Go on, have fun (I do so myself), but don't underestimate their officiall videos. They are very often "something else" ;) Absolutely worth looking.
I agree that Rammstein is a band one should experience live. Instead of doing what most other reactors are reacting to. I would instead suggest Live aus Berlin. That being said most of the music videos are also great treats.
@@armandthevagabond8641 Live aus Berlin is pure gold!! Includes so many good songs from Herzelied and Sehnsucht that they don't perform live anymore (Weisses Fleish, Buck Dich, Bestrafe Mich)!
Holy crap i never thought rammstein would end up on this channel, so glad it did tho. You should definitely check out mein hertz brennt, puppe or rosenrot, probably my 3 favourites of them! Mein hertz brennt is this awesome combo of metal with a really cool classical element (isch)
Now we know what Doug is gonna have stuck in his head the rest of the week. Gotta check out some Rammstein live performances. They're great entertainers
@@RogueReplicant The band is not understandable without the live show. Check this video: pro-shot -- check the number of people there: th-cam.com/video/yBLd6RG-Xsk/w-d-xo.html. The song, "Ohne Dich", is a romantic love song, translates roughly as "Without You". Very beautiful video, not like the one you saw here.
@@TedinCalgary1952 It's not about the video. It's the type of music, it's just boring af and sounds like a circus anthem. The only reason I'm even here is because I follow Doug's reactions. You fanboys really need to broaden your musical horizons.
@@RogueReplicant "The proper term [for Rammstein] is "unlistenable crap" ☺️" - Unfortunately this is just an opinion, not a fact. "Putting this crappy music on is bullshit. How can you fools bear to listen to this shit? 🤔" - It's pretty simple though, we've got two ears connected to a functioning brain. "Getting this crap stuck in your head is like getting brain cancer, wtf 😬" - Still waiting for scientific proof to back up this thesis... "I attempted to watch that crap, made it through a few minutes. Some people grow old but they never grow wise 👊 " - If to grow wise one needs to abandon his personal taste for the likes of others, I rather stay a fool for life. "It's not about the video. It's the type of music, it's just boring af and sounds like a circus anthem." - To be fair, on a Rammstein song you will never find a bollocks-crazy guitar solo (even if Richard got one or two opportunities to shine), a drum solo (except for Weißes Fleisch in Madison Square Garden), or a bass solo at all. Flake will always play his synthesizer for synth sounds (oh wait, there are official piano versions of Rammstein songs! And what about Diamant?) and time signature is always standard 4/4 (except their track called "5/4", oh how foolishly simplistic and unoriginal...). But hey, this stomping, unrelenting simplicity is a huge part of their sound, and they have got beautiful ballads in their discography as well. And Lindemann's lyrics are always off the charts in their metaphorical grandeur, always fitting the either melancholy or sinister tone of the music. All of them do, what they do best, and that is "Tanzmetall", Industrial Metal or Neue Deutsche Härte. Perhaps it just ain't your genre? "The only reason I'm even here is because I follow Doug's reactions. You fanboys really need to broaden your musical horizons." - Well, Doug is a great guy from what I can tell, but he did not seem to mind this track, did he? No, he went through the entire thing, smiling and open-minded, he pointed out the symmetrical tonal progression in the verses and he mentioned to reread some of the lyrics he didn't quite get on his first try. He even called it a "very enjoyable listen" in the video description and is willing to "give them another shot some time" (13:03), while you are not just here for Doug, but, judging by your seven replies in this and other comment threads, to "save" him and us from Rammstein, the "unlistenable crap". Maybe you should stop acting like a troll or an elitist and broaden your musical horizons yourself? Oh and my taste stretches out from Ronnie Radke, LP and various metal branches including bands like Nightwish, Dream Theater, Tool, Haken, Architects and many more, over Steven Wilson and Poets Of The Fall, to old Progressive, to Rock and even Punk sometimes, to Rap and Pop at times (only if it's originally done though), to Folk and even to Funk. So that's that. And even if Rammstein will never ever grow on you, they partly live of being mocked. Have a nice weekend, gentleman :)
This is the best reaction to Rammstein I've ever seen, and I watch a ton of reaction videos. I'm a huge fan of Rammstein, rock, metal, and classical music. Thank you for your insight regarding the keys they were using and your exploration of the lyrics (something many 'reactors' fail to do. I'd love to see you react to more of their work, along with other artists who I'd be happy to recommend.
As this was done 6 months ago, I am intrigued to learn how many more Rammstein songs have be reacted to. Falling down the Rammstein Rabbit Hole is a very fun trip. If you haven't yet, react to Buck Dich (live)... just give yourself 10 or so videos beforehand to prepare you. Great video! Can't wait to see what else you have in store!
About Rammstein's sense of humour: when the ladies storm the radio shop and grasp the receivers one can read their brand names - the first names of the band members ;-)) Marketing fun factor: When the video and song was released for the first time, the Rammstein crew used a huge video projector to beam it on a house facade at a busy inner-city crossroad in Berlin. That is, only the video without the sound. About 2500 people gathered there with their private radio receivers (e.g. mobile phones). The beaming started precisely when a local radio station played the song for the first time at 6:05 pm right after the news show. Was a wonderful atmosphere and evening.
The beginning of the Achtung, Achtung was from the first transmitting of the radio in Germany in the 20ies. He is actually saying that they are going to play "Tanzmusik" (dancemusic) now. I am not often watching the videos to Rammstein, and so this time I first noticed the flags on that buiding. It is the one of the EU, when it is coloured at the end one cane see it is the twelve EU stars on a red background. And while the song is about the GDR and that the people were listening to news and music from the west, it also contains a warning. And what we have to pay attention and prevent happening. I always love the band, their symbolism and messages.
It's really fascinating to me that Rammstein managed to get the uneasy "not sure if it's safe or danger" feeling across, solely through the music. You don't even have to understand the lyrics to get an insight of how these times must have felt. Truly art!
First time I see someone's first reaction to Rammstein is Radio, usually people start discovering Rammstein from Du hast, Rammlied or Ich to dir weh... Anyway, there are many more interesting songs of them to react to! Keep on discovering them Doug 👍🏻
Rammstein official videos are good but their live performance is where the "Fire" is, literally. They are absolutely mad lads when it comes to pyrotechnics.
I feel like I almost lost my eyebrows in one of their concerts. And they've lit Christian Lorenz on fire, as usual... one of the guys from the venue didn't know that this was part of the performance, and was running behind him with a fire extinguisher.
As a testament to how good they are, think about how difficult it is, traditionally, for bands who write in their native language to really make a name for themselves in the U.S.
This one is very similar in style to the tracks on 'Sehnsucht', their second album - which the band described as 'tanz-metal'/dance metal. From that album, 'Engel', and 'Du Hast' are staple live tracks. Given your classical composition background, I'd suggest you give their album 'Mutter' a listen - it's arguably their magnum opus. From this, 'Mein Herz Brennt' and the title track both offer up a large, symphonic-leaning soundscape. (And 'Mein Herz Brennt' was used in a Mercedes advert.) You should also watch some live footage as their performances are renowned for the prolific use of pyros, given that lead singer Till is a qualified pyrotechnician (and as they say, most of their audiences do not speak German, so they decided to connect with the audience in another way, via awesome live presentations.) A very cool band!
Pleeeeease do more Rammstein! "Mein Herz brennt" (Piano Version) is a good one, it's so so hauntingly beautiful, very reminiscent of Romantic composers such as Schubert or Schumann (deutsches Kunstlied). And if you want to see the most incredible music video ever made, check out "Deutschland"!
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better reviewing my favorite band, Iron Maiden, with my favorite song; Rime of the Ancient Mariner. You review my other favorite band!! Rammstein are the best!! 🤟🏻🔥
Wow, that's showing respect to artists having millions of fans worldwide, nice! I wonder what is the sht your listen to than? Please let us know, enlighten us!
Rammstein are my favourite band, you have only just begun in discovering what delights they have given us over the last few decades! Keep digging! It's worth it.
Thanks for the great reaction. Keep in mind, that they're singing about their youth as they grew up in eastern Germany. Every time I see this video, I discover something new. There is just so much in it (for example a scene that refers to the famous painting "the liberty leads the people" by Delacroix which is originally about french revolution). In general, Rammstein make outstanding videos and the lyrics are imho the best contemporary german literature. Sadly, the music is often rather simple. If you know a lot about german history, have a look at "Deutschland" which deals critically and very in depth with its history. Another great one is "Pussy" which criticises sex tourism in europe in a very special way. I personally like "Haifisch" very much as it refers to "mack the knife" ore to be exact the opera "Dreigroschenoper" by Brecht (where mack the knife comes from).
Hi there. This is awesome. An American, who speaks German well ( you almost have no accent 👌)reacts to Rammstein. Definitely, please do react to more songs by them. You get the depth of the beautiful (most of the times) lyrics and the great music, they create. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
"Deutchland" is a Ramstein song I think you'll enjoy. The music is a bit more complex and the lyrics are interesting. Not to mention the epic music video. I do however think there might be some issues with reactions often being blocked
These guys are so cool. Rammstein deserve your attention. :) Next up? Ohne Dich. Very melodic and incredibly symphonic. Very lovely. You’ll see a whole other side to them. The video for the song is great as well.
Hey, Doug. It sounds kinda dance because it's the genre itself. It's called Industrial Metal. If I can recall, the genre came from Germany and spread to other countries, mixing dance/electronic stuff with metal. Another fun fact: they're the same group as they were back in 1994, when the band was formed. Never changed members.
Many Rammstein music videos are very good. "Deutschland" is for me the best music video I have ever seen (and the most blocked reaction). But Rammstein is one of, or the best live band in the world. If there is an official live video... Many lyrics have to be read between the lines. They also like to play with words that have two meanings in German. Check out the concert in Paris. A German band singing in German in front of French people and everyone singing along. Welcome to industrial metal ;)
Please react to the official Video "Deutschland" from Rammstein. It's one of the most elaborate clips of all time and is a round trip of german history. You will love it because of its fantastic music and the exciting pictures. Very interesting what you think about...
Thank you Doug for the Rammstein reaction. They are a really interesting band (Rammstein is the name of a huge American airbase in Germany) They are a very provocative band, many of their filmclips are like short films beautifully shot, the band are very into cinema and directors like Tarantino and Lynch. They are pioneers of the "Neues Deutche Hartes" genre, with elements of Metal, industrial and synth. I'd love you to analyze more of their material.
I've been watching non-stop all your music analysis and reactions, I love it! I really like when throw in some musical theory, and explain how some "tricks" work and how you connect the lyrics/theme of the songs with melodies! Thank you Doug! Keep them coming :) Cheers from Berlin!
WOW!! I REALLY didn't expect this song here! One of my favorites by them! I first listened to Rammstein last year and they became one of my favorite bands ever. Their discography was a fun one to discover! Radio is a great way to get the first contact with the band... This last album have great songs, all the singles are great. Some suggestions for Rammstein: - Mutter (more slow and mellow, but powerful song), - Reise Reise (more of an epic song, it's ... dense... it's the best word to describe), - Mein Herz Brennt (there are two versions - I recommend the full album version), - Mein Land (an odd ball, but I'm really into this one!)
That was awesome! Thank You so much for sharing your amazing insight :) Rammstein - is a Huge Rabbit Hole for you to wander down but every track is unique and different! Please do 'Dutschland' from the same album Doug you will LOVE that track :)
It’s all true. I do often wonder if people who grew up behind the iron curtain (such as myself), perceive Rammstein differently than than people who haven’t had that experience.
Rammstein is usually famous for their impressive live performance and hard industrial songs like 'Engel', 'Du hast', 'Feuer frei', 'links 2,3,4'. They also have some very theatralic ballads like 'Ohne Dich' and 'Rosenrot'.
Your observation of the feeling of danger at around ~6:30 is so very accurate. The song is about how it was forbidden for people growing up in the GDR (Communist East Germany) to listen to West German Radio. You could get in all kinds of trouble if people found out you were consuming the west's capitalist media so there was a real sense of danger.
If you loved this, you'll love their following songs: As many have mentioned "Deutschland" (from the same album) and "Mein Herz Brent" (Piano version it's an Operatic version of the same song)... The video for Deutschland is iconographic from the depiction of Germania (personified) and the Roterfaden (red thread that connects) does not pull any punches when recounting the history of Germany from the times of the germanic tribes vs the Romans to more infamous eras throughout the ages. Both videos are disturbingly beautiful
I love Rammstein, they have a truly unique combination of crunch metal and techno, with a monstrously powerful groove. Their visual concepts have often combined dark, oppressive military themes with “Theatre of the Absurd”-ish dramatic elements. Their singer, Till Lindemann manages to channel Marlene Dietrich on occasion, lol. Powerful, thought-provoking, immensely compelling... Rammstein.
I was expecting other German bands but not Rammstein, that was a surprise! They have a very unique sound, industrial rock mixed with some electronics and metal. "Du Hast", "Deutschland", "Ich Will" and "Amerika" are some of their classic songs. A heads up though, some of their clips are kinda... PG 18+. Another cool German bands you could react to are Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray and Avantasia, all very proeminent on the european Power Metal genre.
Now that you have discovered Rammstein, you have just opened the floodgates to an incredible musical and artistic journey. So many great German bands to be discovered. Prepare to be blown away...
Rammstein is such a unique band with very special style. Their Videos and Lyrics are provoking, extreme and setting big statements, while also the pure sound of their music makes them the best of their kinds. Not to mention their Live Performance that is just on a whole other level (Pyrotechnics and overall entertaiment). In my opinion the best german music makers there are.
Rammstein’s approach to music video appears to be _‘go big or go home.’_ Each Rammstein music video is essentially a musical short film often consisting of an extraordinary level of production.
And naked, oily band members, in one case :D
@@supernanny089 or literally porno with deepfakes
Gene Simmons of KISS: „We got pyros in the show !“
Till from RAMMSTEIN: „Gene, HOLD MY BEER !“ (goes on stage and sets a man on fire with a Flamethrower)
I would very much recommend a reaction to Deutschland, which is very profound in its lyrical content and has an amazingly shot video that references all of German history. It's definitely their masterpiece, imo. Musically speaking, their work is more on the simple side, in general.
@@savanto9614 I Agree!
@@unidaten I volunteer for that
Oh yes, definitely. That one he absolutely needs to watch and react to.
My recommendation:
The band "Kraftwerk" and their song "Autobahn". If possible, take one of the latest versions. If possible from one of their latest life events with the 3D animation of the German highway in the background.
Greetings
Mega 👋😇👋
PS:
"fernes Weh" means literally translated "distant pain", right.
I mean the album Radioaktivität by Kraftwerk is literally a the front and back of a Volksempfänger printed on. ( Cheap NS time AM receiver)
Great comment! Danke! -Adam aus Schweden

Dankeschön! :)
As a guy from Europe, I can't imagine someone not knowing Rammstein!
Achtung! Rammstein!

Exactly great Comment
Greetings from Germany

Puns. All day every day. Usually involving hypocrisy by way of sexual deviancy.
"my ears become my eyes"... So powerful!
I like it.
My parents always asked me why I took German in high school. Living in So Cal, it's Spanish or nothing I suppose. Well, this is why I took German!!
And one would think that in So Cal, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Japanese would also be sensible choices, not to mention any of the many, many native languages that are threatened with extinction.

This band's discography is absolutely full of musical surprises.
Amen. Rammstein is like a gift that keeps on giving. Lyrics are gold.
You'll return with a Tinnitus and charred eyebrows but got to see the best pyrotech you will ever see
Rammstein are the best live band I've ever seen.

So here are some key facts:
The Rammstein 2019 tour was the second highest grossing tour in the world of non-English language acts, behind only Korean “K-pop” band “BTS”. In Europe they were just behind Metallica and Ed Sheeran in total receipts: Sheeran; $147.63 million; Metallica $135.56 million; Rammstein; $131.26 million. Despite only playing 31 shows in Europe, for the 2019 world-wide all-languages category of “Rock Groups”, they were #3 behind only the Rolling Stones and Metallica, and in front of: Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Bon Jovi, U2, and the Eagles (in that order), and of all musical genres in all languages world wide, 4th in the world after only the above three “Rock” groups plus BTS, and world wide were ahead of:
all country performers (#1 Garth Brooks $78.29 million; #2 Eric Church $70.67 million; #3 Florida Georgia Line $52.43 million, and #4 Carrie Underwood $51.86 million);
all “Pop” groups (#2 Arashi $115.35 million; #3 Jonas Brothers $109.87 million; #4 Backstreet Boys $101.36 million) and all “Hip Hop” groups: (#1; Eminem $42.82 million; #2 Drake $33.88 million, etc.).

About Rammstein's sense of humour: when the ladies storm the radio shop and grasp the receivers one can read their brand names - the first names of the band members ;-))
Marketing fun factor: When the video and song was released for the first time, the Rammstein crew used a huge video projector to beam it on a house facade at a busy inner-city crossroad in Berlin. That is, only the video without the sound. About 2500 people gathered there with their private radio receivers (e.g. mobile phones). The beaming started precisely when a local radio station played the song for the first time at 6:05 pm right after the news show. Was a wonderful atmosphere and evening.
Damn, was hoping the super secret German band was Blind Guardian.
Wheel of Time would be very interesting for example. Or everything else.
You should do Mein Herz Brennt by this band. Such a banger!
Its opera, metal opera. And all the deepth n majesty
When you imagine this song sung by Luigi with chorus 'Maaaaario! Mario!' nothing will be the same
OMG, haha!
No, please no ffs
I'm speak portuguese and hear the word "Radio" perfectly in the German language. Now you have changed everything for my ears haha
Rammstein official videos are good but their live performance is where the "Fire" is, literally. They are absolutely mad lads when it comes to pyrotechnics.
Quite literally
They want to be worth the price of admission... and have fun.
Good suggestion. Mutter is a very powerful and emotion filled album.
I really enjoy when you explain all the cords and the theories behind the songs. It's actually the main reason why I love watching your videos.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better reviewing my favorite band, Iron Maiden, with my favorite song; Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
You review my other favorite band!! Rammstein are the best!! 🤟🏻🔥
"It reminds me of a dance track more than a hard-driving metal track"
You've already figured out their entire schtick lol
Wow, that's showing respect to artists having millions of fans worldwide, nice! I wonder what is the sht your listen to than? Please let us know, enlighten us!
@@alextozzi8619 Salty! I am an absolute Rammstein fan and even I know that several of their songs are dance-like.
@@channel5980 Rammstein itself calls their music style dance metal. As a fan you surely know that.
@@channel5980 you said it correct, SEVERAL, and its not dance, is called INDUSTRIAL METAL, let's call the things how they should be called?
@@tosa2522 Tanz Metal even ;)
Awesome to see Rammstein here. Do check out some of their live shows as they are incredible with some excellent visuals and props.
Ja, Haifisch!
Love their official videos but their live shows are amazing.
Hi there. This is awesome. An American, who speaks German well ( you almost have no accent 👌)reacts to Rammstein. Definitely, please do react to more songs by them. You get the depth of the beautiful (most of the times) lyrics and the great music, they create. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Would definitely love some more Rammstein! Especially some of their live performances.
"Deutchland" is a Ramstein song I think you'll enjoy. The music is a bit more complex and the lyrics are interesting. Not to mention the epic music video. I do however think there might be some issues with reactions often being blocked
these guys put on insane live performances, love this band!
These guys are so cool. Rammstein deserve your attention. :)
Next up?
More Rammsten! More Dream Theater! More Nightwish! MORE DOUG!!!!
No. No more crap, ffs 👊
Rammstein? What a surprise! You should watch some live shows, it's amazing! I will see them live for the first time next year in Nijmegen (:
Rammstein has to be experienced live.....👐
Welcome to the Rammstein Universe. There is a lot more to discover. Great reaction btw ;)
Deutschland is a "must see" (and listen). It's lyrics are very interesting and the official video is mindblowing!
Rammstein is one of the most unique things in the world! Love it!
Deutschland from Rammstein is a must - let alone from the historical scenes put into the video!
Powerslave and Judas be my guide are classic iron maiden songs
Powerslave is legendary, but the song itself is too straightforward for musical analysis IMO.
Oh my! Judas Be My Guide is at my top 5 for sure!
Power slave is in Phrygian mode if I remember right.
I've been watching non-stop all your music analysis and reactions, I love it! I really like when throw in some musical theory, and explain how some "tricks" work and how you connect the lyrics/theme of the songs with melodies! Thank you Doug! Keep them coming :) Cheers from Berlin!
Septic flesh- Prometheus live with orchestra.
Dimmu Borgir- Progenies of the great apocalypse.
Luca Turilli - any song
WOW!! I REALLY didn't expect this song here! One of my favorites by them!
I first listened to Rammstein last year and they became one of my favorite bands ever. Their discography was a fun one to discover!
Radio is a great way to get the first contact with the band...
This last album have great songs, all the singles are great.
Some suggestions for Rammstein:
- Mutter (more slow and mellow, but powerful song),
- Reise Reise (more of an epic song, it's ... dense... it's the best word to describe),
- Mein Herz Brennt (there are two versions - I recommend the full album version),
- Mein Land (an odd ball, but I'm really into this one!)
Rammstein always kills it with their music videos.
Other great music videos are Deutschland, Keine Lust, Ohne Dich... actually they're all good!
That was awesome! Thank You so much for sharing your amazing insight :) Rammstein - is a Huge Rabbit Hole for you to wander down but every track is unique and different! Please do 'Dutschland' from the same album Doug you will LOVE that track :)
Rammstein's members all grew up in the DDR, which definitely colors everything they do. They're awesome, and absolutely hilarious!
YES Rammstein! I knew I made right decision to subscribe YESTERDAY
Powerwolf ist auch geil :)
and End of Green
Now that you have discovered Rammstein, you have just opened the floodgates to an incredible musical and artistic journey. So many great German bands to be discovered. Prepare to be blown away...
You need to see them live!!!!!! Best live band ever. They are better live then on the records haha.
Wow you reacted to Rammstein! How did I miss this gold. Amazing band.
Rammstein - Deutschland is an amazing track to listen to, the video is also super cool
"makes me feel like there's danger" he says - in the exact moment the lyrics talk about danger.
"Wow!, I did not expect that", is a common reaction to Rammstein
Rammstein is such a unique band with very special style. Their Videos and Lyrics are provoking, extreme and setting big statements, while also the pure sound of their music makes them the best of their kinds. Not to mention their Live Performance that is just on a whole other level (Pyrotechnics and overall entertaiment). In my opinion the best german music makers there are.
