Robotech or Macross - What's the difference?

Hey all. This is Dad Reviews Anime. A review channel where parents can find out and relate to what Anime their kids are watching and maybe interest some of you into anime you've never seen before. Welcome to my first review!
Today we're going to review Macross. It's an anime that eventually became the first chapter of a western cartoon called Robotech.

That was a solid high level review and presentation of Macross. It has a lot of rich lore to it, a gem of sci-fi animation form the 80s.

Honestly, I just wanted to know if watching Robotech is the same as watching Macross.
I’m not sure where to stream Macross and I found the full Macross arc of Robotech on DVD.
Is it just the names that are different or are they such different shows entirely that I should keep searching for the original?
Also, as someone who watches anime and is used to Japanese names, you absolutely butchered multiple pronunciations.

Genesis Climber Mospeada is a title I LOVE! As well as Southern Cross. Though those American shows aren't as good as Robotech.

I hope this gets answered..... what other anime falls into the scope as Robotech? I'm not into all the porn, monsters and powers in a lot of what's popular.
