Save money by changing the oil yourself using parts easily obtained from Walmart. See blog at theb.life for parts list, more details, and other videos.
Helpful if you already know what you are doing. However, dangerous if you follow this explicitly. Advise that generator should be level first. Advise not to remove dip stick while generator running. Advise that oil level on dip stick is designed such that dip stick should not be screwed back in to check level. Best to use proper weight oil, which depends on range of outdoor temperature - for instance 15W40 is good for the range from 10*F to 100*F (most three season weather). A quart contains 32 ounces, not 36 as shown in video. Advise for people to check their specific generator model operations manual for amount of oil. Ours is an Onan QG 2800 HGJBB (RV model) and 0.6 liters (20.28 ounces) is recommended. Thanks for making me figure this out after watching the video.
Too many mistakes, so I hope those viewing know that you do NOT screw the dip stick back in when checking and make sure you know how much oil. Mine is a full quart and I have the 2800
Specifications: Per the Cummins-Onan manual for the Microlite 2800 generator HGJBB (Spec A) on the Travato: 1. Oil capacity is 0.6 liters = 0.63 quart = 20.16 ounces. 2. The drain bolt torque is 6.78- 13.56 Nm (5 -10 ft-lbs) Notes: 1. When determining the amount of oil to pump out of the quart oil container, be sure to account for the amount of oil in the pump mechanism and the tubing. If you pump down only to the 20 ounce mark on the bottle, you will be putting less than the required 20 ounces of oil into the generator. 2. This oil capacity for this newer version of the Microlite 2800 generator significantly less than the 0.95 liter = 1 quart capacity of the older versions of the Microlite 2800 generator.
@@kathyfann There is no oil filter on the Microlite 2800 generator HGJBB. Recommend that you check specification for the oil quantity and the types of filters needed for your specific model generator. as these specifications change from model to model.
Great tips with the gear case pump from the boating aisle. Only recommendation I have is to wear a pair of gloves to make clean up a little easier, I speak from experience lol. Thanks again! -Thomas
My mistake - there is no oil filter on this model. I was looking at the wrong information. I will be doing the air filter change though when I hit 200 hrs.
Those pumps make life easier for rear axle fill too. Nice work - one thing I'd suggest is oil change no more than 50 hrs. It lives a hard life under there and running a.c. in hot weather is pretty hard on the oil. 1 qt and an hour of time is cheap insurance. I like Rotella or Delo 15w40 for these air cooled gensets.
Nice video thanks for sharing you might also mentioned that you can take the used oil to any automotive parts store and they'll usually accept it so you can dispose of it there. And since you're working with such a small amount pf oil did you take into account the oil that was in the clear tube that you pumped up before you started to calculate how much you were going to use cuz it seems like you calculated that oil as being used it was in the tube as well just just asking thanks again.
Can someone share if they’ve added a easy change valve like a fumoto? If so I’m assuming you need the adapter since the plug seems to be recessed. I plan to add a Fumoto valve for easier changes but wasn’t sure on the size
Besides the 32 vs 36 oz mistake, you used the markings on the bottle so the oil in the tube also did not make it into the generator. The generator got less than 20 oz. of oil.
Nice Onan generator oil change video except the quart of oil has 32 ounces (not 36) and when you pump in the oil down to "12" on the bottle , your actually putting in 20 ounces.
Bad video. Many mistakes. The worst mistake was screwing in the dipstick to check the oil. It will give you an incorrect reading. Bad, bad, bad. Check your manual.

Very helpful. The pump was interesting too.
Great video. Love to see you change the air filter, clean the spark arrestor and change the spark plug.
Thank you for posting. It was just as much work making this as it was doing the actual oil change.
Thank you for sharing! I think, I may be able to this myself! Can’t say I would but you covered the steps well!!!
Very helpful! Thank you!

Thank you so much also is there a filter as well that we need to Change

Thanks, hard work and great video!

I surprised that there is no oil filter!
Good video, thanks
There is an oil filter, but it requires changing less often and is not as simple to do yourself. If I end up doing it, I'll post video.

Cool 😎

Thank you is there a filter as well that we need to change?
Oil filter change? Have you changed that?
🙏🏼
What year model is your generator? I have the same 2800i and it calls for 1.1 qts and yours only used 24 oz
Could you tell me where you bought the oil and where you bought the pump. Thanks
Have you ever changes the spark plugs? I am having a challenge with trying to locate a video tutorial.
is there an oil filter on the 2800 generator?

Will it hang down too far?
Besides the 32 vs 36 oz mistake, you used the markings on the bottle so the oil in the tube also did not make it into the generator. The generator got less than 20 oz. of oil.
Where is the air filter? Is it left and below where you where working.
James Georgiades it's to the upper left

A quart is 32 ounces, NOT 36 ounces. You put in 20 ounces, not 24ounces.
Bummer generator access. A 2800 is a hassle to use even when accessed from a door on the side of the RV.
It takes a coin to open it
Makes you wonder who gave a thumbs down to this video and why...
Because there are too many errors...worst being checking the oil...never screw the dip stick in on the Onan. Other errors too
