DDO is such an overlooked game. Neverwinter is more popular but I find it to be largely fluff, i.e. a typical MMO where you just play for leet loot. Fighter, Barbarian and Paladin mostly blend into one generic melee class and they have little to set them apart. DDO's selling point for me is the Eberron setting which hasn't been explored in computerized D&D games at all, if you've played Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 extensively you might as well skip Neverwinter MMO.
Lars of the Mohicans I’ve tried quite a few other MMO including Neverwinter and I keep coming back to DDO. I wish more people would give it a try, I think they would enjoy it. Thanks for the comment!
started the game yesterday and i have played soooo many MMOrpg games and i have to say that only from the start i can see the game is rly interesting and rich , such unique feel in this game i love it so far
I played the game about 6/7 years ago and really loved the questing, but I was really in to PVP at the time and PVP very niche in this game,so I left after about several months of play. I came back, as i now am looking into just enjoying a fun questing sword and board game, but i am loving it, so i might take up tanking seriously.
This has to be the best 'guide' i've ever seen. It must've taken hours to do, and it shows. Your vid shows 10 Int, 8 Wis, but the link to the guide shows 8 Int, 10 Wis.
Blitz Here Oh, it does! I'm used to seeing the stats listed as STR, DEX, CON, INT WIS, CHA and the build lists INT after WIS. Good catch! I think WIS is more beneficial to new players on this build, so if anyone is watching, 10 wisdom, 8 intelligence is good. Thanks for the comment and the compliment!
Even though the other comments all seem to be from years ago I still want to say thanks for a good basic beginner's guide. Just started yesterday and definitely learned a few things from this video!
2 years late but here I got. Haven't played much of DDO but old time DnD Pnp player/DM. Prefixes and suffixes on Weapons and Armor almost give you all the info you need. Holy Maul of Light (just made that up) could be that is only wieldable by a Holy Spellcasting class (Paladin, Cleric, Favored soul) and that either emits light or allows you to cast light. You then would be checking the attack modifier and damage modifier (STR for any 2h weapon on both). If uncertain after reading suffixes and prefixes go on ahead and read the description. It seems overwhelming at first but it actually is not after you get the hang of it. Hope this helps you and any other new player out there.
tarogaro I’m not sure what the most populated servers are right now, but I started on Cannith and there are some good players there. I would recommend Cannith and apply to the Silver Legion through their www.guildmedieval.com/#/ site. They’re very helpful, very nice and family friendly. If you’re new to the game or even a veteran, those folks will treat you like family. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks for the comment! It's my hope that new players search this out & get some use from it. New players are a good asset & can become good guildies & long-time players if they see the basics.
@@DirtyWilliam Best D&D adaptation ever imho. Besides offline games I think this one is the best at capturing 3~3.5 eds. The best part for me is that they integrated some of the Prestige classes as enhancements which to me was dangerous when I first saw it (2 nights ago) but today seeing how level progresses (4 ranks per) seems pretty good adding up to MCing with new classes bringing new enhancement trees... Thats crazy for customization (which is what I love about 3rd and 3.5 editions and to a lower level 5th ed). I am assuming that, since it is a MMORPG one build is the optimal for max content, sure, min maxing was a thing way before MMORPGS were a thing but having the availability to build a character EXACTLY how you want it with the options given is priceless. Sure, that requires a lot of game knowledge or you might end up screwing your poor toon with a bad choice, but hey it is the same in PnP and thats awesome.
I agree, planning a build from start to finish in 3.5 (and DDO, as it is based off 3.5) is the best path. There are several planners on the Interwebs (link below) that will assist in making a good character. And if you don’t know what you’re doing (read: me), then find a build on the forums at DDO.com and follow it. ddowiki.com/page/Character_planner
great video. Should mention (because either you didnt or i missed it) 1) paladins need wisdom to cast spells. Its not a problem to take an 8 wisdom because you can use an item to do so. 2) square icons can be dragged onto hotbars and are abilities that can be activated.
Thanks for the comment! I avoided some information to create a "general" beginner's guide, but I'll add the Wisdom information to the description! A +3 item should be available by level 4, at vendors or the AH.
Thank you for the comment! It was a good first effort. I left out some things (paladin needs an item to cast spells for example). I tried to give as much info as possible but also make a short, grokable video. I'd like to make a series of 3 to 5 videos to elaborate on topics like bags, bank, and guilds, plus more gameplay. Glad you enjoyed!
DDO is very underrated. I just started playing and it’s amazing. If the marketing was better it could make a comeback since the new movie is coming out.
3:12 Jeets can be a little pushy and annoying when he first appears. It would be just best to turn down your volume until you are ready to talk with him. Trust me on this. Edit: I forgot to add that Players should not throw out their *Starter Rags (armor)* as they are a cool skin for Barbarians in future lives and it is the only one we get, ever. Not even a TR will give us a new one. I made the mistake of destroying mine a long time ago and then I saw a female Barbarian wearing them and I was like DOH! I regret it.
Funny you mention that. When editing, I let the in-game volume play & Jeets was loud and annoying. Had to mute him. Regarding Starter Rags, they can be crafted on as well. Yet another reason to hoard all the things!
Just now starting and listening to this guide is very informative. Thank you for your insite. I might make a melee character. But i am not sure. Is there any place where i can find good builds
Mark V www.ddo.com and check the Class section of the forums. After my recent let's play of a paladin, I was impressed and recommend it as a good starting character for new players to learn the game. The link to the build is in the playlist here on my channel. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the game!
Dirty William very cool. Despite seing this video was made in '15. The fact that you respond still is cool. Thank you. Downloading textures pack. Takin too long tho 💀
Mark V I try to reply when people ask questions about the game. And yes, this video is three years old and the game has gone through a number of changes since then. I need to make an updated video for sure.
Nice intro video...btw, Paladins now have access to a class-enhancement cleave and greater cleave within their enhancement Knight of the Chalice tree, so you can save those 2 cleave feat slots for something else, like shield feats or Two Handed Fighting feats, metamagics, etc.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, paladins have access to cleave & great cleave enhancements now, freeing up two feats. I only used the cleave feat to show off "aoe" damage, but saving two feats on a feat starved class is a better trade off. What do you think feats should look like at level 1?
+dirtywilliamwj Power Attack for sure, should be the first feat, with the human bonus feat most likely going to Two Handed Fighting. Shields will eventually be a big part of a paladin's gear, if you take advantage of the great changes to sword and board. With that in mind, another eventuality is getting the bastard sword feat. Bastard swords get the splash damage when coupled with a shield (same goes for dwarven axes if you play a dwarf). So, getting the THF, ITHF, and GTHF feats synergize well with the AoE damage of cleave enhancements when going bastard sword and board. But, for the first 5 to 10 levels, you'll most likely not be using a shield, and will most likely be using a big two hander, so either way having those three THF feats will do a paladin a world of good. Later on, I'd probably go with shield bash and shield mastery feats, and even as silly as it might seem, if you're a pure paladin, take the tower shield feat as well (unless you take a level or two of fighter, which grants that feat for free)....but honestly, the pure pally capstone is worth it, so spending a feat on tower shield is better in my opinion than compromising a pure 20 pally with a couple of fighter levels. It's really great now that a feat starved class like paladin can finally free up a couple of feat slots and have a bit more variety and depth in their build. Even a metamagic or two are make more sense now than before the shield and KoC cleave additions to the game.
IamNinjaDodo It takes some getting used to. I recommend to EVERYONE that they just follow a build on ddo.com. Some skills aren't useful. A good build will give you exactly what you need for that build.
Julio Jose there have been many changes to the game since this video was created. I did a quick search of “DDO f2p paladin build 2019” and found the following” www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/503934-Need-28-Point-F2P-Pally-for-My-Daughter Scroll down to Ralmeth’s post on the first page. It is not a precise build as to when to take enhancements, but it lists feats and starting build points and what to aim for with enhancements. I still think paladin is a good choice for a new player despite it being a MAD class (multiple ability dependent). Gear with the highest + item to strength, constitution, charisma and wisdom, a good two-handed weapon and heavy armor. As a new player, focus on learning the quests (ie: how to quickly and efficiently complete them). Best of luck and enjoy the game!
I made a tempest ranger. When I pull up the enhancements screen there isn’t a tree for the tempest. Did I miss something? I’m so confused about why I only have the two archer skill trees.
Ark good question! Ctrl+r to bring up enhancement trees. To the far left is your racial tree (human, elf, etc). To the right are your class enhancement trees. At the bottom of each you will see the name of the tree (Arcane Archer for example). There is a drop down arrow to the right of the name, click that to set it to an enhancement tree you want. If you don’t see Tempest click the LARGE arrow to the right of the enhancement tree box to scroll through to other trees. If you need any other help, let me know!
ItsGacy Video capture: Mirilis Action. Editing: PowerDirector 13. Thumbnail: Adobe Photoshop Elements 13. In 2014 I compared many programs and those gave me the best bang for my buck. I've thought of buying new editing software for more effects, but it still works fine and I don't do a lot of flashy animations. I may "upgrade" what I have to the current versions in the future though. What I'm more interested in doing is Twitch streaming, and that necessitates another monitor (if I want to do it well), so any $ I have will go to that first. Somewhere on my channel I have a "how I make my videos" video. I think. I may have deleted it, not sure. Thanks for the question!
Darren McCormick The error is on the server where the site you're trying to reach is located. If it's about DDO, it could be they were down for maintenance at the time. I don't know much about servers other than to Google the problem and see if someone else was able to find a fix.
Super Hex Hit “O” for social tabs. Click FRIENDS. Type the character name OR if you’re close to them, right click their character, click the gear button on the Focus Orb and add to Friends list. It only adds that character as a friend, not the player. If they’re on another character, you have to add that one too.
Enggi GG Standing Stone Games have added more races recently (gnome, deep gnome, assimar) but in my opinion, one of the strengths of the game are the classes it offers and the enhancement trees available for those classes. It allows deeper customization than just five years ago, and to be honest, anyone can play anything and still cap; some race/class combinations are just better at being "fun".
I’d love to join in too once I get my PC fixed. The video card broke during my moving houses and I’ve not had the cash flow to get a replacement. Anyone else want to party with Kris?!
