No joke, after watching this video I called my grandpa, who lives in South Dakota, and chatted with him for a bit. He's my only living grandparent now, and you reminded me how important it is to tell the people we love that we DO love them, and never just assume they already know. Thanks. :)

Hello, Kristina Homer. My name is Robert Dubisar, and I was born in Dickinson at St. Joseph's hospital. I have been living in Central Oregon for 40 years, so I am probably 20 years older than you. But, my heart still tugs very strongly for the badlands state. I was born in 1962, in December. I have relatives who hate North Dakota with a passion, but they don't know what their missing, either. It's also true that there are many people of a German background in the state. In your video, you touched on a number of things related to the German culture. Das ist wunderbar. That ist wonderful. The state of North Dakota has a way of keeping people humble. And, hopefully teach them not to forget where they came from.Kristina, you and your family are good people, no doubt. Du bist gut volks. You are good people. I grew up on a farm outside of Reeder, south of Dichinson an hour or so. I have many fond memories of the farm.I am a sentimental person. I get that from m,y mom. Her background was totally German. Her maiden name was Hettman. In all truthfulness, it should be spelt Hettmann. I am writing a lot of words, but I am hoping to get response from you. I miss the people and the state so much. If you want to respond, great. If not then ok.

Hi, ziganda. my name is Robert, was born in Dickinson, currently live in Central Oregon for 40 years, but remember North Dakota so well. If you can make a trip to the U.S., and go to North Dakota, you are in for a treat. There's not much about North Dakota that isn't wide open, but, I've always enjoyed the drive from Dickinson to Bismarck, or even Dickinson to Williston. Interstate 94 is the highway from Dickinson to Bismarck, and highway 22 takes you north from Dickinson to Williston. At any rate, those are just ideas.

(which is coming up real soon) The HostFest! (pronounced whost fest). In fact there are a lot of Scottish people here too! In fact my family is from Scottland! Also, even I wouldn't try that "raw meat" I've never even heard of it!!!

The best part about North Dakota is the community that the entire state has with one another. It’s such a small world and you pretty much know everyone you come in contact with in some way shape or form. I’ve met people that are my third cousins twice removed and people that are friends with my siblings and farmers that know my grandparents. It’s just such a loving place to live and even though we don’t have much here, we have family, and that’s all one can really ask for.

We, my husband and I, have been all through the midwest on our way to Mount Rushmoore. We had our brand new Lincoln Towncar back then and I was always making sure it was detailed all along the way, and yes! There were a lot of grasshoppers! They were not easy to clean off the car, but it was done. We loved South Dakota and the people were amazing and warm hearted. God keep them all, happy, prosperous and healthy. The closest we came to North Dakota was in upper Minnesota.

What a lovely video! I've been thinking about this very idea lately, so the video was especially poignant. We do get busy, we do have things like college classes that take time. But we should never be too busy to let people who are dear to us know how much we love them. And it's especially important to tell people how much we appreciate the little things they do that they may think are insignificant--things like showing you photo albums and sharing good food. Thanks for a thoughtful video!

Food in North Dakota is awful. I mean Victorian English boiled mush is almost better. North Dakota is void of any flavor. Fargo has some pockets, but they are expensive. Kroll's Diner is popular here. it is an insult to real diners. There is a reality disconnect here.

Some people have different opinions. A lot of the food in North Dakota is from countries like Sweden, Norway, And Germany. The state still has good food. But you might not have the same taste as others. So many people have different tastes in food or etc. But people their love those foods. And if you don't like something there doesn't mean it's awful to others.
Also don't forget people try so hard to make those dishes for you.
And some people might not agree with you on your point. You would have to say what is wrong with the food. Also I would put it like something like this. What's good about it and what's bad about it. You can't really just leave like that.

This video totally resonated with me! I was born in Pierre, SD and moved away when I had just turned two. The Dakotas have a lot of problems, and people usually forget about them or make fun of them because they're isolated and conservative and they have small populations, but there's something really beautiful about the vastness of them, even the emptiness, and about the enormous hearts of the people who live there. I love going back to South Dakota.

We spent almost every weekend with them when I was a kid and visiting them brings back to many memories and I love my crazy family. I got back from a weekend in Cologne yesterday, it was my grandparents' golden wedding anniversary and it was wonderful :)

I was born in Georgia and except for 7 years in South Carolina that is where I have always lived. During the summers I would go stay with my grandparents in Iowa! It is so different from what I was used too and I love it up there. I have so many great memories and friends! I honestly wish I could live there all the time! Iowa will always have a part of my heart!

I think I have always taken for granted the fact that my grandmothers live so close to me and that I get to see them so often. It must be hard to have family that far away, but I'm sure you make the most out of every chance you get to go to North Dakota. Your family seems wonderful, btw :)

I drove through ND via I-94 twice during a cross country drive.... it's surprisingly a beautiful state during the summer months. I honestly would not mind living there. The slower pace of life might not be all that exciting, it's refreshing.

Kristina, I live in North Dakota, Fargo to be exact. I graduated from High School in Fargo, Oal Grove High School, and from college in North Dakota too, Valleyn City State University. And I was in the North Dakota Centennial Company in Boot camp for joining the Navy in Summer or 1989. I love living in North Dakota, I love sports especilly football and North Dakota is home to the 5 times in a row National Champion BCS North Dakota State Bison. They got beat before the championship game this last football season, but they will start another championship run at the end of this coming football season. I actually went to NDSU for one semester and summer school and had a great time. But I graduated from VCSU. I was almost 8 years older then the VCSU President himself and am 4 years to the day older then one of my history professors at VCSU, she's from Wyoming and moved back before I graduated. Living in North Dakota is pretty good.

I'm from South Dakota and people always make fun of my state. I actually am really grateful that I grew up in such a down-to-earn, quaint, wholesome place. I always felt safe, had plenty of entertainment, and never felt deprived. Thanks for shedding some light on the greatness of the underapreciated Dakotas.

Thanks, Kristina, this video is amazing. It reminds me of Esther Day, but also reminds me that we should act like every day is Esther Day, because we never know how much or how little time we have left with them. I was retaught this in the past 11 months, in which time my Gran became sick, was diagnosed with pancreatic, and passed away.

I'm from Saskatchewan. Which is directly north of North Dakota. We are very similar that we just have miles and miles of farm. I'm not actually around farms much though, because I live in the city, but still. Nobody's ever heard of us, and the only time we're in movies or anything is when they want some weird foreign place to use as a name. But I love it here. Lots of space.
And Kristina, you're almost as scared of grasshoppers as my mom is.

Love this place because it's the place I've been in for FOREVER. Love it here. Did anyone else know Josh Duhamel came from ND? And those old houses that were in the video... I like going out to the middle of nowhere and checking those out. I would go inside but I don't because they could collapse at any moment. My favorite thing about ND? The small towns. Like Driscoll, ND. That place is just a road straight through the town. Very difficult to get lost.

I live in California and all my family lives in Vancouver (where I'm from), Northern Ontario, or somewhere in the UK or Ireland, so I almost never see my extended family. I know how you feel about North Dakota, because that's how I feel about New York even though I wasn't born there. I moved here when I was 3 and it's been my home ever since. People don't realize just how beautiful this state can be. We're not all cities like some think we are, we have the Catskills, the Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, Lake Erie, the Appalachian mountains and SO much more! You won't believe the beauty you can find here if you just take the time to look
