  • Bharat Ek Khoj-The Discovery of India
    A Production of Doordarshan, the Government of India’s Public Service Broadcaster
    Episode 15: The Sangam Period and Silappadikaram, Part I
    With Pallavi Joshi as Kannagi, Rakesh Dhar as Kovalan, Anandi as Madhavi, Rekha Parmar as Mother. Choreography by Kanak Rele, Nalanda Nrityakala, Mahavidyalaya, Jayashree Nair, and Upasana Dance Akademi. Additional Play Back by Girishan, Geeta Eshwaran, Prem Kumar, Sethu Madhavan, Anitha Sheshadri, Shobha Ramchandran, S.R. Venkatesh, and Rajan Easwaran.
    Nehru noted that in South India, for more than 1000 years after the Mauryan Empire had shrunk and finally ceased to be, great states flourished. Unlike the virtually land-locked North India, Southern India was especially noted for its trade by sea. They were also sea-powers and their ships carried merchandise to may distant countries. In the south, Chola, Chera, Pandiya, Chalukya and Pallava Empires were coextensive, from before the first century onwards, with their counterparts in the north. Since repeated invasions in North India did not affect the South directly, they led indirectly to many people from the north moving south including builders and artists, craftsmen and A artisans. The south became a centre of old artistic traditions and remained a stronghold of ancient culture for centuries.
    The famous Sangam (confluence) literature providing a literary meeting point between the courts and the remote rural areas was a phenomenon of 4th to 1st century BC. With the resonant percussion playing of Mridangam, we witness some of the best Chola sculpture of statuettes and hear recitations of the Sangam poetry Agam verses of internalised romance and love; and Puram verses of ebullient ambience of festivities. Nehru cites the legend of the northern sage Agastya who went to south to establish bonds between the Aryan and Dravidian civilisations.
    Silappadikaram was the most famous Tamil epic from around the 2nd century BC, by Prince Ilango Adigal, that has its tale rooted in the ordinary lives from the Chera and Pandyan kingdoms, and provides rich cultural knowledge to understand both ancient and modern south Indian thinking. The merchant Kovalan is married to an extraordinarily beautiful Kannagi and they live in a haven of bliss, till Kovalan sees a vivacious courtesan Madhavi displaying her classical dance in Mohiniattam style, accompanied by Sopanam music and instruments of Vina and Edekka. Kovalan is mesmerised and cannot resist bidding 1000 gold-coins to win over Madhavi. When, after her enchanting dance in Dasiattam (present Bharatanatyam) style, Kovalan holds Madhavi in his arms, the whole world is forgotten, let alone the pining Kannagi at home. When eventually Kovalan returns to his place of trade, the bulk of customers have deserted his thriving business. Despite disappointment and occasional efforts to get Kovalan back Madahavi continues her dancing for other chants.
    Meanwhile a thoroughly repentant Kovalan returns home, all is forgiven by the faithful Kannagi and both set out for the far city of Madurai in search of new business opportunities.

      Everything is not correct. Many are made up. No doubt this documentary is a good attempt to give diverse views of Indian history. The discovery of India's author has aligned his views with European fake theories.
      Sangam literature and civilisation is much older than it is stated. India is so beautiful to have multiple strong traditions, however they have common roots.

    After they went to Madurai , When Kovalan tried to sell the anklet, it was mistaken for a stolen anklet of the queen. Kovalan was accused of having stolen the anklet and was immediately beheaded by the king without trial. When Kannagi was informed of this, she became furious, and set out to prove her husband's innocence to the king.
    Kannagi came to the king's court, broke open the anklet seized from Kovalan and showed that it contained rubies, as opposed to the queen's anklets which contained pearls. Realizing the error, the king committed suicide in shame, after having caused such a huge miscarriage of justice. Kannagi uttered a curse that the entire city of Madurai be burnt. And gradually Madurai lost its glory, and invaded by cholas. The capital city of Pandyas was set ablaze during the invasion resulting in huge losses..

      This serial is fairly old, and was based on a book which was even older. Now we realize that some of things in the show are inaccurate, such as in the Indus Valley episodes, Indo-Aryans are seen attacking and Indus Valley city. However it is know known that the Indus Valley Civilization collapsed due to climate change, and the Indo-Aryans never raided their cities. Rather, the Indo-Aryans arrived when descendant cultures such as the Cemetery H culture were present. However, the Indo-Aryan migration is still a reality, and those who oppose it often have a nationalist bias that prevents them from looking at the facts.

    • @chinmaybhogilal6459
      @chinmaybhogilal6459 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The term "invasion", while it was once commonly used in regard to Indo-Aryan migration, is now usually used only by opponents of the Indo-Aryan migration theory. The term "invasion" does not any longer reflect the scholarly understanding of the Indo-Aryan migrations, and is now generally regarded as polemical, distracting and unscholarly.
      The Aryans emerged as an independent group on the Eurasian steppe in the form of the Sintashta culture beginning in 2200 BCE. Archeologists have discovered that the funerary rituals of the Sintashta culture match those found in sections of the Rigveda. The Aryans then migrated south and east to form the Andronovo culture. The spoke wheeled chariot is found here, which is also evidence for its Aryan nature. Many Iranian peoples have historical dominates the region, such as the Saka, Sarmatians, and Alans. Archeological findings of the Andronovo and textual evidence of the Vedas and Avesta also show how the Andronovo was Aryan. The Andronovo culture borrowed many traditions from the neighboring Bactria-Margiana Archeological Complex (BMAC), but did not mix with its people. We know that they did not mix with the Aryans, because modern day Indo-Aryans don’t have any BMAC DNA. The Aryans then branched out into the Indo-Aryans and Iranians. The majority of the Indo-Aryans went into the Indian subcontinent. There they first materialized in the form of the Gandhara grave culture circa 1700 BCE, centered on the Middle Swat River. The polished gray and black pottery, burial of bodies, metal pins used to fasten clothing, and terra-cotta statues of women are all similar to BMAC sites. The graves of the Gandhara grave culture particularly represent a combination of the Andronovo and BMAC traditions. Burial of horses is also something the Gandhara grave culture shares with the older Andronovo culture. In the Gandhara grave culture, there is also significant cultural continuity with previous Indian traditions. Genetics of the Gandhara grave culture shows that its inhabitants had a DNA component from Mehrgarh, an early IVC site. Then the Indo-Aryans spread south, absorbing the Ochre Colored Pottery Culture and the Cemetery H culture, both of which were remanants of the Indus Valley Civilization. Thus the early Vedic period began centered on the Sapta Sindhavah in northern Punjab. In the later Vedic period, the Indo-Aryans spread west, with Kuru and Panchala being the most powerful kingdoms.

      Nehru did not come up with this idea. The europeans who led the early archaeological surveys in India did. They were the ones who spread this idea. Nehru was no archaeologist nor a historian but a nationalist in the pre independence era who had got one of few reasons to boast of a much more ancient and civilised heritage than our white rulers', a heritage that was until then not acknowledged but ruthlessly undermined as backward and barbaric by the British. So a proud nehru wrote about it in the hopes of instilling the same pride in fellow Indians and at the same time, educating the world about our vibrant ancient existence. What archaeologists have gathered since then has given way to a different picture now but back then it, as nehru knew it, was the commonly accepted theory.
