2020-2023 Schwinn Boundary Mountain Bike | The best Walmart bike under $250?

  • The Schwinn Boundary has history here on KevCentral. It was the Boundary that was the first 'Hidden Gem' bicycle I found at Walmart. It was responsible for a friend getting into mountain biking and even went on to serve as a campus bike for a local college student. This year Schwinn has updated three bikes and the Boundary is one of the three.
Updates include: Modern MTB geometry, stronger suspension fork, 31.8x720mm handlebars, 1x Pro Rush drivetrain, lock on grips, shorter stem, and a tapered headset.
Check out the video and then comment below with your opinions on the bike. Do you agree that this is a big deal and possibly the beginning of a paradigm shift in what a Big Box Bike is? I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

They will not. They have reputations to uphold. That horrible shock, bad derailleur, awful wheels will not work on a real mountain bike. They all have lesser priced city or commuter bikes available but a mountain bike will cost more because it will have better components. If they go as cheap as this on some bikes, their reputation will be ruined and people won't even buy their high end bikes. Schwinn was considered a premium brand at one time and they ruined their reputation by making bikes like this.

For the first time I think I’d say I’d get this over any 500 dollar bike from trek, specialized or giant. For half the price this is a hell of deal, throw some hydraulic brakes on it, and air fork and for 500 dollars you’d have a trail worthy machine.

I'd agree if it had a freehub based rear wheel but its only freewheel so much weaker than normal mountain bikes, they have fitted a solid axle to strengthen it but still not substitute for a much stronger freehub. That to me is the worst thing about this bike, they have done a lot of good work with the re-design and they could have fitted a freehub rear wheel with a 7 speed cassette but chose the much weaker option. Personally I would have chosen rigid forks for the bike which probably would have allowed for a freehub rear wheel and 7 speed cassette. That way you would only have to buy suspension forks to use it off-road and could always refit the rigid forks for commuting etc. No wasted parts and a much more versatile bike.

And judging by the video I think it works pretty well, I mean, even with modern and expensive clutches you get some minor chain slap, and this one seems to be on par with a SLX 11 Speed I had. If this Rd uses Shimano 2:1 pull ratio it would be interesting, since you could pair it with Claris or Sora on cheaper gravel bikes...

I got this bike around the time it came out and I used it to go to school one day, I had this big buffed up lock and I put it on my bike so I was fine. But I really wasn’t, someone had cut all my cables, bent my rotors, popped my tires, and almost cut part of the chain. They also had bent most of the spokes and cut of the seat. I was so damn pissed but at the same time I felt bad for my dad cuz he payed for it and he’s not rich. The school did find who did it, the kids parents ended up paying us and he got consequences. Meanwhile we took it to Walmart and got it exchanged with some documentation the school gave us. I can’t believe how selfish and jealous people can get.

As a 65 year old....retired Navy and retired Fed....riding since my “preteens”....I am happy to see Schwinn spoken in other than “four letter word” terms. My first quality bicycle was a 1971 Continental. I rode that bike through high school, a four year enlistment and college in New Mexico. My next bicycle was Schwinn’s entry into “mountain bike“ territory...an ‘85 Sierra....which I bought in OCS as a bike I could literally “throw“ on my Navy ships....to ride in liberty ports....everywhere! Believe it or not.....though modified....I own it still.....using it as a rail trail cruiser and a commuter. I also have my ‘86 Super Sport.....which I rode throughout the south while attending Federal Law Enforcement training in Glynco, GA...and many years until “wife and kid” syndrome. My current “new Bicycling love” is my bikepacking rig...a Chumba Stella ti....which while I love and had custom built up, it has yet to bring the many years of “miles with smiles”. It will, no doubt.....but, Go Schwinn. I’m only too sorry that profit won over quality so many years ago. To all my younger bicycling enthusiasts.....keep riding hard......i promise you that the years will pass oh so quickly. Nice video, my friend.....thank you for throwing out some “Schwinn love”! Bravo-Zulu On a job well done presenting the video and giving Schwinn a break!

Enjoying your insights and perspective-seems like Schwinn has some inside followers. Hoping the do the same for the Santis as I like both gray and green versions as hydraulic brakes under 300 is pretty good for a base hardtail frame. I went to Wal-Mart to buy a cheap bike with disk brakes for an e-bike conversion. This looked worth the $70 extra I was expecting to spend. Holy mackeral! There is no way I am putting a motor on this near perfect bike. This fits my 6 foot frame perfectly. I live on the side of a mountain and everything is either straight up or straight down. Half gravel roads, half paved with lots of rough trails in between. The gearing is perfect for climbing straight up . Downhill on paved roads, you will run out of gears but you do have enough high gear to start a fast run to get you halfway up the next hill. A properly geared Gravel Bike is my first choice for the type of riding that I do. I do not need a front shock. My Mongoose Elroy Gravel Bike is perfect for my riding area but the low gearing is too high and needs an upgrade.
I cut my bars down to 630mm, 24 inch because I never had a problem on these roads even with 45-mm,18 inch drop bars on a road bike. The bars are about 2mm rolled steel tube at the ends. Narrower also helps transportation and getting it into my tiny cottage. Aluminum bars may be an upgrade if you want to cut some weight.
Unlike the Hyper Carbon 29 that looks like this bike, this Boundary has a real tapered headset.
Shifting requires lots of force and is jerky. I will see if I can upgrade to an Altus shifter system. It feels as if the cable may snap when down shifting.
The brakes are awesome. They use the larger rectangular pads. I never felt such good control going straight down sand covered snowy road.
Actual measured weight is 39 pounds.
Kickstand is awesome but is about 1/2 inch too short for flat paved surface. I will have to carry a piece of wood shim.
The front fork seems almost useless on small bumps. Since I do not ride fast on difficult technical trails I would consider swapping this shock out for a lighter unsprung fork. Maybe I should go all out and convert this to a gravel bike which is my first choice. The brakes and gearing are far superior than my Mongoose Elroy Gravel Bike. Hope all this helps someone decide.
Am currently shopping for Schwalbe Winter Marathon studded tires but are hard to find now. Am contemplating the Ice Spikers but they are overkill.
UPDATE: The shifter keeps getting more difficult and erratic. Putting that Altus derailleur on is now a priority. But it could be the shifter. I may even consider a simple grip shifter. I once fixed some cheap Shimano trigger shifters by disassembly and large scale deburring of all the components. Deburring may help.
We do give up certain things at this price point. I still love the frame and fit. I put Schwalbe Ice Spike Pros on yesterday. What a nice secure feeling on ice and snow. Also excellent traction going up very steep climbs ... but make sure you down shift ahead well ahead because the shifter is not reliable. The LBS owner that sold me the Ice Spikes tried adjusting the shift system and even he could do nothing with it.

I have a dilemma. I’m 5’7 with an inseam of 30. Straight stand over height on this for me is a soft steady caress of the taint Riding the bike though is comfortable (as soon as I changed the seats) I’m new to all this but these videos have been so inspirational (thank you). I’ve had the bike now for a week. I’ve taken apart the entire front end already and put it back together just intrigued and eager to tinker. I’ve even tuned the rear derailleur with the help of another TH-cam video successfully. Then watching KevCentral clutch adj video led me to diagnose the clutch on mine was too tight restricting shifting all by myself. I enjoy the few rides I’ve had on it. I really do feel comfortable reach on it is right for me. BUT I’m second guessing the stand over height clearance. I looked back and tried at Walmart a 26 hyper carbon and that stand over clearance was only slightly better. I’ve only done a very mild trail and had a great time and dismounting has never been an issue because I’ve always just angled the bike slightly to either side. I was thinking of switching to a women’s al comp but I can’t find the updated 2020 version on Walmart at all. Getting a 1x setup would also cost more than the $50 differential between al comp and boundary. Looking for other options, I think KevCentral is spot on: this bike is in a category all on its own in this price range. (Going to a step over design or full suspension bike with lower and angled top tubes are options I’ve come up with). I want to keep this bike and grow with it, am I stupid enduring an unnecessary risk with the stand over clearance? Do you have suggestions?

@@lexithelexus7377 My suggestion is to use whatever gear is most comfortable for you for pedaling, using different gears for different terrains. You'll find some gears too easy and some gears too hard, in different situations/locations, so choose a comfortable gear in-between. Been riding local trails for fitness since retirement on a 26inch Next PX6 got a chance to ride a 29 and have been looking for one ever since. Saw your review and found one of these at a Walmart 25 miles away, Hopped over and grabbed it. I've been riding it everyday for a week now on easy trails and have run across a few issues. First whoever assembled it missed several of the cable clips no biggie took 2 minutes to fix. Second the Pro Rush derailleur needed to be adjusted as I was getting random shifts, again no biggie. Lost the chain off the crank sprocket once for no apparent reason while in hi gear barrelling down a steep hill on a gravel path, hasn't happened again. Took it out this morning to a bit more intermediate level trails and noticed my geartrain was noisy in 1st stopped to check it out and found that the angle adjustment had apparently backed out allowing the derailleur jockey wheel to contact the sprocket again an easy adjustment with a multi-tool and I was back in the saddle. I'm thinking the Pro Rush derailleur is the weak link of this bike, if it needs adjustment all the time it might not be for those who aren't mechanically inclined.

I ordered the boundary but walmart shipped me the new aluminum comp due to an error in the system. Customer service said I could use the bike for 30 days while i wait for the boundary to show up. So, i got to ride both new versions and the boundary out of the box to me blows away the aluminum comp. The boundary feels like a mountain bike, wider bars, nicer grips, the shocks are much stiffer and have more travel plus the 1x7 with clutch. The small extra cost is worth it. Also the standover on both is maybe a 1/4" difference, i'm 5'11, 6 foot with sneakers. I hope kev does project boundary next.

I'm glad I found this bike so thanks, Kev, for the review. I've had a road bike for years. The Boundary is a nice re-introduction to what I found fun about biking as a kid, namely, riding all over everything and whipping through the woods like a maniac. One note, though, for anyone buying this in summer 2020: I returned 2 of these before I realized the freewheel is pretty crappy. It's a clunky, wobbly mess. Finally, on bike #3, I swapped out the ProRush with a $20 Shimano freewheel and the clunks are gone and shifting is much smoother. I don't know if my store got a bad batch or what, but that ProRush freewheel is going into the scrap heap.

      frosted chedder smoothie
Quite a bit more, at $800 in the states. But for the money you’re getting a high quality Trek frame, lightweight RockShox fork that you’re actually going to be able to service and isn’t going to be a pogo stick, and Shimano drive train.
If that’s a little steep for getting into the sport (totally understandable), you could get a down specced model such as the 5 or the 6, however those models come with a Suntour fork that isn’t gonna be much better than this Schwinn, so you might as well go with it.
Bottom line is that the components are far more reliable. For example, it’s one thing to HAVE a 1x drivetrain, but if it shifts terribly and breaks in a year, is it worth it anyway? Not saying that it will, I trust Kev and I’ve found that he gives very honest reviews. But any Shimano drivetrain is gonna blow this thing out of the water.
Sorry for the long answer to your question, I work at a bike shop and can really get myself riled up. I love the channel and am glad that “Walmart” bikes are being treated for what they are, rather than being cast under the same stereotypical light of being trash. If this is your budget, it’s a lot better than many other options. But if you truly, truly want to get into mountain biking, I would save your money for a bike that will grow with your skill level. I think any rider who buys this and plans on riding it regularly will be bored with its capabilities after a short time.

Keep in mind I’m not in the market for a new bike but I saw this and had to stop. I quickly noticed the upgrades and 7speed. Saw the clutch and I’m like , really? 29er with all of these features and for under 300? So I pulled it off the rack and thought I’d give it a once over. After a few minutes and being vastly impressed, I just happen to be looking over frame and came across a mark down sticker!!! It said $138.99!!!! WTH. It either was a return or something was wrong with it. But holy hell for $140, I was not NOT walking out with this bike. 2 weeks later and a bit of tinkering (mild upgrades and adjustments) I’m stoked on this bargain bike. LOVE IT

I am glad to see Schwinn upping their game. My first Schwinn was a High Plains back in the early 90's and I upgraded just about everything on it, over time, and made myself quite a mountain bike that I rode like people drove their cars. I LOVED that bike.
Now, some 25+ years later, I have a Giant ATX 27.5 (bought it about 5 years ago) that is also a FUN bike for me. I do not do mountain biking anymore but still like the feel and ride of a mountain bike on the roads. I have tricked out my Giant as well with a lot of accessories. I was out of riding for MANY years and decided to take it up again. When I get the bike out to ride, the feel of the air and the general freedom makes me wonder why I ever stopped in the first place...
I am interested in getting one of these Schwinn bikes just for riding around on like I would my Giant. I am choosing between this Boundary and the Taff...
