Thanks for this video. Your clear and concise explanation about dynamic loft helps me to get more pressure on the ball and therefore more distance. My compliments. I often hit the ball to the right when I hit my 6-5 iron. Now I see that I can work more with my hands/wrists. And especially thanks for the clever drill with the hanger!
Byung Tae Ahn from Korea. Your U-tube videos are the best among many tutorials. I appreciate your teachings!!! I love you!!! I can restart golf with a strong coinfidence after 10-years break.
From all the TH-cam tutorial videos out there (and I have watched a lot ☺️), your explanations have had the greatest impact on my swing. Thanks Eric and keep up the great work.
Absolutely the best golf instruction videos. You have a wonderful way of explaining the swing dynamics. Love watching these. I also enjoy your Monday live feed.
I’m revisiting this video after a few months. This was absolutely fantastic and spot on. I swing my 6i about 100mph and I was getting 8000+rpm of spin and was about 150 feet high. Fantastic for holding greens, no good for windy conditions or accuracy. Losing a fair bit of potential yardage. I’m now carrying my 6i 205 yards at 100 feet high and around 7000 spin. This video for me was a game changer.
This explains why in previous videos you explained the importance of maintaining trail hand wrist position from take away through impact.Although I'm a work in progress I realized ball contact improvement almost immediately as well as finding the exit window much more in concert with trajectory. It's great this video is 3 years old and still teaching the same swing fundamentals today that don't contradict previous content . Thanks for your continued hard work . ⛳️
Definitely. Had a lesson a few months ago, during which the instructor tried to convince me that a vertical swing is better. I tried to explain that I was trying to go less vertical, as this had previously caused me problems. He stood up against my right armpit, pushing the club towards the vertical as I took a slow backswing. Ended the lesson snap-hooking the ball, and with an enhanced feeling of awkwardness in the backswing. Decided against going back lol
First time watcher. Great video and nicely broken down. Love the drill. I have a Mevo+ and been working my way through the various variables that it measures, researching them, and then understanding them. I’m on dynamic loft and spin loft now. I’ve watched and a read a bunch about the desire to lower dynamic loft, but no one has really put a number on it. Yours is the closest I’ve found (less dynamic loft for slower swingers). I’m not a fast swinger anymore after two hip replacements (53 years old), but very athletic and understand the swing very well, so good at manipulation to get results. As an example, been working with my PW (T100s and T200 irons). So, 43 and 44 degree wedges. Initial measurements showed w/a swing speed of 72, I was getting 41 degrees of DL with the T200 and 46 with my T100s PW. After reading up, I was able to get my DL down to 36.5 with the T200 and 37.8 with my T100s. But, in the process I lost about 8 yards of distance with a slightly slower swing speed since it’s new to me (1 mph). My smash factor was lower as well, probably due to not being used to the technique…bottom line, is there a formula to figure out ideal DL or is it trial and error with different number to see what gives the most consistent numbers? Thanks!
Hey Pete! I would need more info to give exact answer but I would look for around 25* for dynamic loft with 8 iron as a starting point with neutral speed....
@@CogornoGolf Understand…but where are you getting that number from? Seems there must be some sort of formula to get a rough idea where you have to calculate it based on your swing speed and loft of the club you are playing, e.g., my 8 iron has 36 degrees of loft (T100s). So, with a swing speed of 78mph, the ideal dynamic loft should be X…or is there more to it? It’s clear that the dynamic loft should be less than the printed loft of the club from all the vidz and material I’ve reviewed…other than that, can’t find anything to zero in on how to determine optimum numbers like we do with drivers to figure out ideal launch angle based on swing speed and spin rate…
I like having all the information, because when I practice by myself, I'll remember those tidbits, even if they applied to something I'm not working on. I'm a beginner so when things aren't working, those details help me know why it isn't. This is why you're the best!
Hi Eric I watched your video since I was having a issue hitting irons too high and to the right. After training the takeaway and release the way you described I was amazed by the results. I’m a natural lefty so that may be why I could implement so fast. Anyway I noticed my average swing speed with my irons went up 15 mph and my arms were finally extended through the ball. I’m very excited to take this change to the range and then to the course. I’ve been shooting in the low 80’s this summer but had been frustrated with my iron play. This breakthrough could really change things for me. Thanks so much for the tip and thorough explanation of the concepts.
Another outstanding video. It's not too much information. Keeping it low and inside is an excellent tip I'll add to the swing. This lesson is exactly what I worked on all of winter 2018. 43 years of playing golf, I'm 60 now, I shot more rounds in the 70's last year than I ever have. And it was all compressing the ball. I went from hitting an 8i 150 years to 175- in fairness here to all my fellow players, I play at 4500 ft above sea level.
Eric Another great video. Reaffirming the basics. Can't get enough of the fundamentals. Thank's for you and Mary's hard work. Have helped my game tremendously.
Hey David! 1. No-not really. It should start forward (hands inside left thigh) and finish more forward (in line with left leg) of course this depends some on the club you are using and ball position. 2. Lowering loft would decrease spin all else equal. Wedge spins much more than driver. Driver spins much less....much less loft.
Another great and easy to follow explanation Eric. Working on your 'Reverse Slice Sequence' now for a couple of weeks and although at times my Driver especially has 'hooked into the next county' it's something very different to my slice/OTT move. Additionally, despite some bad shots my scores have become more consistent. I think I'm ready to move to stage 2, and work on the 'gate' at which point I'm hoping the dynamic loft factor will really start to kick in and help get my scores down further, hopefully much furtherer. Kind regards James
Youre heading in the right direction my friend! Face first then path Then pivot/rotation/dynamic loft Need to see different shots (left) in beginning....thats good progress!
hey Eric, been trying to fix my flip and toe shanks the last few years asking you many questions lol. I always thought my club face was okay because i never sliced or faded the ball, but that was because i was flipping to sq it up. a few months ago i took video and watched my club face . the backswing was fine but on the downswing for some reason the face was opening. I started doing you knuckles down drills on the downswing and its made a massive change in my swing. few weeks ago i went on trackman to check my numbers and was surprised 6 iron 19-23 dynamic loft with an average of 179 carry with a "real" 6 iron and mid 20's with an 8 iron. only thin my Aoa wasnt down enough
Great video as usual. I’ve really been focusing on clubface control which is making me hit a big hook now. When I was on track man my attack angle was still low noting better than -2. Makes me wonder if I’m still flipping just slightly before impact. Proper impact is the holy grail of what I’m searching for, but so hard to get right and feel
Eric: Another great video (as usual). Since I have been following Martin Chuck for many years, I purchased the Tour Striker Educator a year ago. It has made a big difference in my ball striking. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering getting one. It’s not that expensive and well worth the price. Btw, how about doing a video with Martin Chuck like you did with Chris Ryan? Eric Cogorno Golf Thanks for answering so quickly. Will check those out. Forgot to say, your production quality is very good, too. Keep doing what you’re doing. Merry Christmas
my club face is tilted down at last parallel but I still have a throw release lol, which causes some crazy (high) hooks I believe. I guess we all have different swing "instincts" where we can subconsciously correct some things in our swing naturally very well and some things not at all? I think I'm going to try fixing this by holding my angles more on downswing and thus decrease dynamic loft and open the face due to more forward lean, by having the feel that I increase my angles - which has seemed to work in my practice thus far. Edit: just seen your video on the more passive release which I think is perfectly suited for my situation!
Yes-either can keep face tilted down and learn to be more passive with release and more active with body pivot OR get face less tilted down with more active release You can find both styles in the hall of fame!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks so much, that's super helpful. In your experience, does each individual have a natural preference for the type of release which they find easier, and therefore their amount of face tilt should be altered to match up with this?
Hey Sam! Good question---I would really need to see your swing to say for sure what YOU need to do without guessing too much. Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com I can help you more personally there
Great video Eric. One question is should I present the full static loft at address with a vertical club shaft as when I’ve tried shaft lean at address combined with trying to lower my dynamic loft, I totally smother the ball? HELP! 🤷🏻♂️😂 thanks 🙏🏻 🏌️♂️
Thank you! I would not prescribe a perfectly vertical shaft at address with an iron (that can work for driver due to ball position being more forward). Hands just inside lead thigh is a good place to start for all clubs...and since the ball position moves more back as the clubs get shorter, there would be more shaft lean automatically. Check out these videos for more info! th-cam.com/video/8TjvCHCAQ0c/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/sJd-0eEQU0w/w-d-xo.html
Eric- thanks for the excellent video. I tried this at the range and started hitting amazing shots with the best feel / distance ever. Now, sometimes I hook a little, or the bull zips to the left of the target (I'm right handed) - in this case, what would you recommend doing? Is it that I need to open up my body faster so that the club face opens a bit more at impact? Thanks!
Hey, Chris! Thank you! I would have to see to swing to say for sure, but yes I would make sure your body is open enough, handle far enough forward first. Then look at face angle (open v closed)
Hey there! Hard to say 100% without seeing your swings, but here is a video that can help with shallowing out your angle of attack👍 th-cam.com/video/hDz9bzKIXDg/w-d-xo.html If you don't figure it out, sign up for our free 14-day trial at www.cogornogolf.com and send your swings in for a free analysis!
Great video Eric, been watching you for about 2 months. Question on dynamic loft. Perhaps I'm missing something (likely the case), but what this video tells me is that I want use my hands to hit the ball with a more vertical, less lofted face. So, why not just hit a less lofted club to begin with??
Hey Erick-thanks! Why do you want less dynamic loft? Would you rather hit your 7 iron 190 yards or 175 yards? Best players hit the ball the farthest. The reason you don't want to take more club is because you want all your clubs farther haha...then you can still take more club but it will be less than it would have. There is a 1-1 statistical correlation with hitting the ball farther and a closer proximity to hole. There is also a 1-1 statistical correlation with hitting the ball farther and lower scores. So less dynamic loft=more distance=more good!
Great video Eric, very insightful. I heard you mention in the video, depending on your swing speed, you might need a little bit of a flip in order to get the ball up in the air. I’m an older golfer, and my average yardage for a 7 iron is 130-135 yards. Considering my yardage, do you think I need to add some flip or not. Any input you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Again, great job Obi Wan! 😊
Hi Eric, great video. Would it also be correct to keep a club face “shut” during the back swing and then from that position, use body rotation to square the face? This way you dont need to think about wrist conditions during the downswing. Thoughts?
Hey Mike! If you go to the top of the swing and pause... Bow your left wrist and extend back your right wrist.... The shaft should shallow... Of course there are other factors involved....body rotation, tilts, forearm rotation, shoulder rotation, wrist hinge amounts......etc
So I have an extremely high launching ball, and it's clearly a result of my swing path and club face angle at contact. In an ideal world I would take some lessons and get my swing fixed, but as an alternative I wondered if it made sense to order a set of clubs where the loft angle is adjusted to help with those of us who have a swing with a naturally high launch. For example, with custom clubs you can adjust the lie, e.g. -1.00 flat, or -2.00 flat. What are your thoughts on that?
Thanks for the video, however I don't get why to lower the loft to increase compression dynamically. Wouldn't be simpler to use an iron with less loft directly?
Hey Pere! You're welcome! Well...what happens if your 9 iron goes 130 and mine goes 160? You would need to take 3 more clubs... So 6 iron for you, 9 iron for me... Are you more likely to hit the ball closer with your 6 iron or your 9 iron? Statistics will show 9 iron. So you want to be able to hit ALL the clubs farther!
@@CogornoGolf just been thinking about it, you gave food for thought,. could it be also that by decreasing the loft dynamically as explained the bounce angle gets reduced, the leading edge gets to the floor and you're then more likely to hit the ball on the sweet spot? Otherwise, there is a risk to hit the ball below the sweet spot or even hit it with the leading edge?
Awesome video! I use this drill and I actually bought “The Hanger Training Aid”. About $100 and worth the money as it doesn’t impend on your grip. - Keep the awesome videos coming ✌🏼🇦🇺
Stronger grip-lead wrist can have some extension (cup and still be square) Neutral grip-flat Weak grip-more bow So you can still do hanger with stronger grip but you better rotate well or face too turned down
Some questions please. 1. Does lowering dynamic loft also result in lower launch angle? If so, isn’t this detrimental to your carry distance? 2. If AoA is too steep, does this affect dynamic loft? Because I noticed if my AoA is too steep (-6), my launch angle goes down and my carry distance suffers. 3. I have a super strong grip, 4 knuckles seen, will that hanger drill work? My 7i club head speed is around 80-83mph Thanks!!
Hey! 1. Yes (yes if your speed is lower you have to watch this) 2. Yes 3. Yes but you will need to rotate it clockwise a bit so it starts more touching trail forearm With that speed and a really strong grip your club face is already probably square to closed so I would assume your loft is already low... you may need to do the OPPOSITE (more dynamic loft at impact) for me to say HOW I would of course need to see your swing to see what's really going on. Send too www.cogornogolf.com if you dont get it sorted
Hi Eric, are you hitting with the right hand and just guiding with the left? I keep thinking of dragging the left hand through impact. It doesn't feel right.
Hey man! There are no "correct" or incorrect feels....some people will feel right, left, etc. I would say in general "dragging" is a bad idea for most. Handle should get forward from pieces...if you have to shove hands forward there's something wrong going on earlier
Certainly..... But I would say that's like 1 out of 1,000 golfers I deal with are at risk of that :) 999/1000 throw too much/too soon.....but yes, we can over do anything
#Eric. I've been doing this drill for about 1 week. I find that even with my PW, when I make great contact, my ball flight is pretty low, it fly's fairly far, but is about less than 1/2 height. Is this due to my slower swing speed, or something else..? Thanks
Could be that, could be hitting it lower on face Also The lower the dynamic loft (which is the goal here) the lower the ball flight The more you hit down (angle of attack) the lower the ball launches Obviously there are diminishing returns....but if your dynamic loft comes down it SHOULD be lower flight
Eric Cogorno Golf I’ve had lower ball flight also, which I expected due to lower dynamic loft. But I also have noticed my ball checks up much better when hitting onto green. Is this an added benefit of lower dynamic loft or is it something else that changed in my swing to cause this ?
After having 4 lessons. Ive been told my path into the impact 0 degrees but i leave the face open all time. I can feel like i flip my hands over and it still barely closes. Any tips?
This is where having a launch monitor that gives you launch angle comes in handy! If you hit a 56* and the launch angle on the monitor is 56* or above! Your not compressing and your not getting dynamic loft!
You actually want the opposite... The MORE SPEED you have the less dynamic loft you can have The LESS SPEED you have the MORE dynamic loft you need When you don't have enough speed you need enough loft to get the ball in the air so it goes high enough to carry far enough. At lower clubbed speed you just don't have enough ball speed to support a low loft....
Eric, fantastic video, as always. One question to clear it up: I‘ve often heard and red, at impact the bowed left wrist points with the back directly to the target. But if I try this, the face is way too closed. So I think and I mean to see that in your illustration with the hanger, that the back of the bowed left wrist and so the hanger AT IMPACT points a tiny bit diagonal to the right to a point behind the ball while the hands leaning foreward in front of the ball, so at impact back of left wrist and so the hanger are NOT totally rectangular to the target. Certainly they will get that only a tiny bit later through the rotation after impact. Sorry, I can‘t express it in another way, hope it‘s understandible. Am I right? Thank you, regards from Germany
Hey Jo... Where the back of left hand will be pointing at impact depends mainly at grip. Back of left hand should point at impact more or less where it started IF you add in shaft lean. Weak grip back of hand more toward target, neutral will be slightly right and strong will be more right. Hope that helps
Haha there are definitely people out there doing that but its for sure not GG....hes a great dude. It's all good though, you have to get some hate to do anything worthwhile!
Dollar Bill Clinton they are idiots for giving this guy a thumbs down. He knows what he's talking about. This isn't some stupid bullshit lesson filmed by a in his back yard.
Could be several things. I would check the club face first....make sure its closed enough so you have more motivation to get the handle forward Here is more that can help: th-cam.com/video/kgexnhJ8qGw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/BFtUnTytOkI/w-d-xo.html
Hey David! Google "trackman 7 iron dynamic loft" you should find some charts. Depends some on your angle of attack here and preferred ball flight. Low 20's
Just play the ball back in your stance, that decreases loft, comes out lower with more control,it hit correctly the ball with stop quickly, better players know this and I've been doing it for 50 years.
If I have a strong grip, should I ease up on the supination? My strikes have been compress-y but the ball flight with my long irons has been low and I am losing distance.
Thanks for the feedback, Charles! I agree that speed is definitely relevant here. More speed the lower you can get the loft with more shaft lean. IF you have less speed you want to be careful...too much shaft lean and the ball won't go anywhere! You would need a bit more loft
Thanks for this video. Your clear and concise explanation about dynamic loft helps me to get more pressure on the ball and therefore more distance. My compliments. Eric Cogorno Golf Thanks for answering so quickly. Will check those out.
Forgot to say, your production quality is very good, too. Keep doing what you’re doing. Merry Christmas
Appreciate it!
my club face is tilted down at last parallel but I still have a throw release lol, which causes some crazy (high) hooks I believe.
Yes-either can keep face tilted down and learn to be more passive with release and more active with body pivot
OR get face less tilted down with more active release
You can find both styles in the hall of fame!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks so much, that's super helpful. In your experience, does each individual have a natural preference for the type of release which they find easier, and therefore their amount of face tilt should be altered to match up with this?
THANK YOU!!!!
You got it!
Nailed it. Loving these
Thanks, Chris!
Pure gold
Thank you!
Thanks, good advice!
My pleasure!
I thought the guys from Me and My Golf could break things down and explain them. Great tutorial Eric.
Appreciate it, David!
If I am coming inside out, do the same drills apply? Reverse them? I get inconsistent contact and I am always looking to improve my swing.

Eric what’s a good launch mon that is affordable that has launch angle
Hey!
Not sure...I'm quite out of the loop to be honest. If you do some googling Im sure you will find options!
What if have the opposite problem? I present 19 degrees of loft with my 8i. My setup is pretty neutral with maybe just a little bit of shaft lean.
Hey there!
Hard to say 100% without seeing your swings, but here is a video that can help with shallowing out your angle of attack👍

Great video I ballon the ball bad always have, coat hanger here I come
Hope it helps, Andrew!
What are some examples of slow and fast swing speeds? Thanks again E.
Fast....PGA tour averages
Medium...LPGA tour averages
Slow...below PGA tour averages
Is this the same for long irons and fairway woods?
Really depends on how much speed you have. If you have enough speed....yes you can....the lower your speed the more loft you need.
I really enjoyed the video.
Hey man! Yup...the LESS SPEED you have the MORE LOFT you need. MORE SPEED you can have LESS LOFT.....so less shaft lean for less speed you're spot on.
Hi Eric, great video. Would it also be correct to keep a club face “shut” during the back swing and then from that position, use body rotation to square the face? This way you dont need to think about wrist conditions during the downswing. Thoughts?
Thats def one way that can work!
Thanks for your reply Eric, will try it that way! Keep up your excellent content!
What is a good consistent d-loft to achieve?
Answered on your other one--depends on speed like you mentioned!
Based on your last comment, for a senior golfer would you just release the contact between the hanger and the forearm a little earlier?
Yes!
Coat hanger is in the bag today.
Love it Dan!
If you're using the "hanger drill" for dynamic loft, how do you, lay-off the shaft in the downswing for "effortless power", simultaneously?
What are your thoughts on that?
does this apply to your passive release video what is the difference is it just the loft angle
Yes it does.
@@CogornoGolf thanks for the answer. You have a new subscriber. 👍🏻
Yes!
It works try it and watch the ball fly😊😊
:)
Awesome video! I use this drill and I actually bought “The Hanger Training Aid”. About $100 and worth the money as it doesn’t impend on your grip.

Keep the awesome videos coming ✌🏼🇦🇺
Love it! Great training aid!
Appreciate it, my friend!
What's optimal dynamic loft then? I imagine there's a line where dynamic loft gets too low? And does speed have impact on dynamic loft?
So, how do those of us with strong grips go about doing the hanger drill? What sort of feedback should we look for?
Stronger grip-lead wrist can have some extension (cup and still be square)
Neutral grip-flat
Weak grip-more bow
So you can still do hanger with stronger grip but you better rotate well or face too turned down
Some questions please.
My 7i club head speed is around 80-83mph
Thanks!!
Hey!
1. Yes (yes if your speed is lower you have to watch this)
2. Yes
3. Yes but you will need to rotate it clockwise a bit so it starts more touching trail forearm
With that speed and a really strong grip your club face is already probably square to closed so I would assume your loft is already low... you may need to do the OPPOSITE (more dynamic loft at impact)
for me to say HOW I would of course need to see your swing to see what's really going on.
Eric: Would the same apply to hybrids and fairway woods?
Really depends on how much speed you have. If you have enough speed....yes you can....the lower your speed the more loft you need.
Is there a danger of a handle drag? Reducing speed?
Certainly.....
But I would say that's like 1 out of 1,000 golfers I deal with are at risk of that :)
999/1000 throw too much/too soon.....but yes, we can over do anything
Is club coming from inside in downswing?
Yup
79k views and only 1.8 likes? Should be alot more likes on this one. Thanks for the content.

#Eric. I've been doing this drill for about 1 week. I find that even with my PW, when I make great contact, my ball flight is pretty low, it fly's fairly far, but is about less than 1/2 height. Is this due to my slower swing speed, or something else..? Thanks
Could be that, could be hitting it lower on face
Also
The lower the dynamic loft (which is the goal here) the lower the ball flight
The more you hit down (angle of attack) the lower the ball launches
Obviously there are diminishing returns....but if your dynamic loft comes down it SHOULD be lower flight
Eric Cogorno Golf I’ve had lower ball flight also, which I expected due to lower dynamic loft. But I also have noticed my ball checks up much better when hitting onto green. Is this an added benefit of lower dynamic loft or is it something else that changed in my swing to cause this ?
Eric......at address my club face is square. When I hit the ball and bring the club back the face is usually in a closed position. Why?
No clue....would have to see
After having 4 lessons. Ive been told my path into the impact 0 degrees but i leave the face open all time. I can feel like i flip my hands over and it still barely closes. Any tips?
Yes.
Few options...
1. Make grip stronger
2. Add more lead wrist flexion
3. Add more lead arm supination
This is where having a launch monitor that gives you launch angle comes in handy! If you hit a 56* and the launch angle on the monitor is 56* or above! Your not compressing and your not getting dynamic loft!
Def advantageous to have to measure!
Is there such a thing as too much deloft?
Yes definitely....a lot depends on speed....and spin. The LESS speed you have......the more LOFT you need.
@@CogornoGolf what is an average deloft of irons? 10 degrees off static loft?
I look for a good player good speed to not go above 25-26 with dynamic loft 8 iron as an example
@@CogornoGolf ok. Thank you sir!
Keep doing what you're doing bro. You're doing perfect here in this demo. BTW you're giving too much info...... Don't change....
:)
Why do you want less dynamic loft for lower swing speed?
You actually want the opposite...
The MORE SPEED you have the less dynamic loft you can have
The LESS SPEED you have the MORE dynamic loft you need
When you don't have enough speed you need enough loft to get the ball in the air so it goes high enough to carry far enough.
That‘s exactly the info I need, Eric, thank you.
There is one person who always give you a thumbs down, out of many thousands of thumbs up,,,, I think that's ( GG ) I'm just saying 😎
What if I try this and still not getting much shaft lean
Could be several things.
I would check the club face first....make sure its closed enough so you have more motivation to get the handle forward

Ok last comment, 85mph, 7 iron, ideal d-loft??
Thank you for watching the channel, Nick!
I always miss the ball left, so I guess this doesn't apply to me. Also lol @ Cameron Champion.
:)
If I have a strong grip, should I ease up on the supination? My strikes have been compress-y but the ball flight with my long irons has been low and I am losing distance.
Yes
Eric Cogorno Golf Succinct! Thanks for the reply.
hey
Hello!
👍👍👍😏
Superhuman strength required ... Impossible for normal person to feel and execute at speed. IMO but I'm trash
Thanks for the feedback, Charles!
I agree that speed is definitely relevant here. More speed the lower you can get the loft with more shaft lean.
IF you have less speed you want to be careful...too much shaft lean and the ball won't go anywhere! You would need a bit more loft
Went googling to see if you have some kind of engineering degree, but instead found an address just 9 miles from me in Pompano Beach. Hmmm. . .
Excellent. Thank you
