ACE AF1 bushing update for 200lb riders

  • I finally found a bushing setup that I like for carving the bowl with the Ace AF1s. I've been looking for a setup that allows the trucks to carve quickly, has rebound, and won't wheel bite. I've tried quite a few mixes, and I finally found one that works for me. I have the large cylinder from the Indy Super Hard on the board side with a cup washer, and I have the Bones Hard bushings on top but I'm using the larger "fat" cone instead of the normal smaller cone, and no washer. This allows me to get the kingpin nut just tight enough to hold the bushings in place, but I don't have to tighten down and compress them at all. So I get full range of the bushing on the carves and they rebound really well.

    Really like your approach to this bowl. The figure 8 in the 2 pockets looks great for building serious speed.
    That is some serious bushing experimentation. Love it.

    • @ElderSkates
      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      super hard bushings is the only way I can ride those ACE AF1s. The stock bushings are a joke. Instant wheel bite if you're not kid-sized! But this pool is my favorite place to practice right now. The 8' (shallow end) walls are shaped really well but are definitely high enough to make this a hell of a challenge. The deep end is an even bigger challenge. It has these 2 subtle hips that jut out when carving the deep pocket. I've never seen another bowl with this shape. I figure if I can get some serious speed in the shallow end, then I can start to figure out the deep end and get some fun lines in here. If you check out the overhead intro I do on some of the videos, you'll see the two hips I'm talking about. Imagine hitting those two bumps at 12' and full speed!

    Thanks so much for this. It helps as I got the Ace AF 77 and I’m also above 200 pounds. This reminded me of what some long boarders do. A hard standard barrel bushing board side and then a conical bushing roadside that is softer. If only Khiro bushings were more readily available. I love those in Ace trucks.

    • @ElderSkates
      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't realize long boarders did that but it really works for me. I'm running the hard and wider conical roadside (a fat conical) but I could probably ride the normal conical now that I'm more used to the Aces.
      Glad this helps man. I'm actually liking the Aces enough to do another setup with a new set of AF1s (black trucks for a black board this time)

    I really thought these trucks were not for me. Thanks for solving the riddle. I felt crazy. Now I can at least begin to try the 77's. I think they will be a nice go between to the 169's & 215's. Cheers bro!

      Riley, really glad this helped. They were a challenge for me! Took way too long to figure out.
      Depending on the temperature, I'll switch out the full barrel bushing to Indy Hard (black) or Indy standard (orange). It seems to help to soften them some when it's colder.
      But I started riding my old Indy 169 with Bones Hard bushings and that setup just works... No need to work so hard to figure this crap out ;)

    Nice skating dude! I'm also 40 and 215 currently, on my AF1 77s I did the stock Ace bottom bushing and cup with a Bones Hard bottom on top, that kept the hanger and baseplate pretty much in line and gives plenty of carve with no wheelbite.
    I love that Lucero deck, I may have to grab a couple to hang on to!

    • @ElderSkates
      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't try the Ace bottom. That might have worked, but both stock bushings were just so loose I couldn't see how either could work. So I aborted that immediately ;)
      The things I love about that Lucero shape :
      - square tail
      - 10" wide
      - 16" wheel base, the biggest difference for me

      @@ElderSkates My current board is the Anti Hero Green Giant, 9.5" with a 15.25" wb and that's the longest I think I've ridden since the early 90s. A 16" wb is gonna be weird but I may love it.

  • @frankface7288

    My current AF1 bushing setup (150lbs, both my kingpins have zero threads showing.): Front truck board-side is Riptide .6" 80a APS barrel bushing w/cupped washer, road-side is stock 91a AF1 cone w/flat washer. Back truck board-side is Riptide .6" 90a APS barrel bushing w/cupped washer, road-side is Bones Hardcore medium 91a w/flat washer. Been riding this combo over a month and see no need to change it.
    I enjoy a divey loose front truck and a medium to stable rear.
    I like my kingpin nuts to take all the damage so I keep all threads covered (I file down washers and kingpin nuts for a little more looseness and swap out for thicker ones as the bushings break in).
    I tried many other bushing combos and found for my riding style/weight anything under 80a up front splits, anything under 90a in back splits as well (Bones soft 81a separates from plastic cap).
    Riptide APS formula quickly dives with excellent rebound. The stock AF1 cone is loosy goosy up front as it deforms under a thinned flat washer. The Bones Medium's plastic cap resists wheel bite at the end of lean. Bones tend to compress and loose height over time (although they feel better broken in so I use a thick flat washer to compensate).
    At my weight the only place the stock bushings didn't split in one month was roadside front.

    • @ElderSkates
      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the awesome explanation Frank. Depending on preference and your weight, there are a lot of combinations that work for people. I had no idea how lucky I was with my old Indy's that the Bones Hard were just what I was looking for. SO trying to make a switch to a new truck was a challenge.
      Your comments on the Riptide APS formula having excellent rebound is intriguing. As this setup wears in, I'll have to see if I get to a point where I need to switch them out again, and I think I'll try the APS formula.

I use black Indy bottom Bushing and yellow top- bushing, with 200lbs, on 149 Indys. I want to get the AF1 with the next board, that's how I came to your channel...

      If you have your setup dialed in, then you'll have your own opinions on the AF1 bushings. Hopefully this helps you along your way getting your own setup down again.
      I'll say that I really do enjoy the AF1s now that I understand what bushings I like. But I do change out the barrel bushing depending on temperature. If it's cold I use the orange indy, and I go all the way up to the yellow super hard indy in the summer when it's 95 degrees.

    That’s great carving 👍🏻 the bottom bones bushing definitely make Indy trucks turn further than the standard bushings which would lead to wheel bite with wide trucks, I skate 149’s with 1/8th risers so luckily it didn’t mean wheel bite for me just a much better turn than with Indy bushings. Great to hear you managed to work out a combo that’s worked for you 👊🏼

      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It took me a while, and the AF1 77s are about a 1/4 wider than the 169s so that added a little to the issue. But finally fixed! Road both setups again today and I ended up liking the AF1 better. I switch back and forth on both of them still. Both are good.

      @@ElderSkates cool 👍🏻 I’ve never tried Ace but I have a few sets of indys to keep me going for now and will grind them down until they break as I don’t like new trucks but maybe I’ll give ace a go one day. I built a board with 169’s for bowl skating a while back and the extra leverage from the wider trucks really messed up my feel , so went back and stuck to the narrower board and trucks for now.

      The best thing I've learned for my style and preference is to have the roadside bushing hard enough to stop me from getting wheel bite, but just barely. And I don't tighten down on them at all. Just get them snug, and let the hardness of the bushing do all the work so I can get the full travel of the turn.

  • @morganconklin8849
    @morganconklin8849 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had the issue of wheel bite too. Of course I have ace classic 03 low 33s. I don’t hate the stock bushings but they do feel squirmy when I set up for a trick that requires my weight to shift one side or another. So to stop my wheels from getting jammed up I put 50mm classics on there. And for the stability I got the low hard ace bushings. It will still respond without feeling like I gotta flat tire. I got the lows because of my fear of heights, and I’m tall already. I feel safer if that makes sense. But it also feels more stable than the regular ones they’re like 3-4 mm lower and it sacrificed a little bit of turning radius, which personally is fine since I don’t need to make u turns

    I had same problem as you. Choosing washers carefully I found to be the silver bullet for me. Particularly the roadside (top) washer. With the right washer you can basically restrict truck motion to max out just before wheel bit. Then you can choose bushings freely according to riding style and personal preference. When using bushings to block wheel bit I always found myself overtightening and loosing out on responsiveness. Just a thought if you still liked the original responsive feel and just wanted to avoid the bites.

      I'll do my best and give you what I know. You'll have to play around a little but it can work. My favorite setup right now is Ace AF1 with a Bones bushing and Indy bushing combo.
      So the board side bushing on an Ace is 16mm, where Indy is 14mm. So you have to add a washer under the bushing to get the right height. Just put them on a table next to each other and make sure the bushing stacked with an extra washer is the same height as the original Ace you're replacing.
      The next thing is mixing up which type of bushing.
      I use a full cone Indy in the board side bushing. I actually run either the orange that comes stock, or the black (which is harder than orange) and have even tried yellow ( which is super hard and good for me when it's really hot out only, not good for the winter).
      Then I use a Bones hard for the roadside bushing, but I use the fat cone instead of the narrow cone.
      I like my bushings to allow the board to almost give me wheel bite if I stand and lean with all my weight to one side. So I adjust the hardness to match my weight, and you'd be surprised at how much difference the temperature makes with this (hence my different setups).
      So play around with that and hopefully it helps sir. Enjoy!

    How about ACE hard bushings?

  • @mental3666
    @mental3666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is a good vid. its hard to comeby decent ' trouble shooting vids' for setups, esp those that relate to older and heavy dudes. I have found that the ace trucks have a noticbly longer kingpin making it hard to use other bushings than those that it comes with and the problem is further agrivated by the fact that ace only produce one hardness bushing set (happy to be corrected on this). that said i love ace trucks and am using a mix of bushings to get by. the setup you have desribed definately works great however i had to look to other options because the bones bushing was making unbareable 'clicking noises'. does your setup make this noise?

    • @ElderSkates
      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for such a late reply...
      No, my bones bushing doesn't make a click sound. However, I think that's because I don't have the curved washer on the bones bushing. I only used the curved washer on the full barrel washer.
      I've also noticed that as the Temps dropped, I've switched away from the ultra hard (yellow) to the hard (black) and regular (orange) on the full barrel depending on how cold it gets. But I always leave the bones bushing as-is.
      The last thing I'll mention is that I've been riding my 169s with Bones hard for the past couple of weeks, and they just work. No matter the temp, they always carve great.
      The AF1s seem to be better at times, but there are too many times where they feel off, and I'm trying to dial it in.
      I haven't done this yet, but supposedly Ace makes hard bushings now. I should try those out!

      @ElderSkates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off, welcome back man! To quote a wise friend, "Bowl skating is the fountain of youth". Here's my opinion on a setup for you. (1) Wide and long wheelbase board gives you a ton more stability. This is the Black Label Lucero Cross blacklabelskates.bigcartel.com/product/lucero-cross-full-black-dip (2) Indy Trucks work out of the box, and bones hard bushings make them perfect. Don't waste your effort on the Ace trucks, they require a lot of specific bushing trial & error to get them right and they suck out of the box. www.tactics.com/independent/forged-hollow-stage-11-skateboard-trucks/silver-169 (3) Get big wheels. I recommend 60mm, and the Slimeballs 97a are great since they have a wide contact patch for grip but are still a hard wheel for speed. But 58-60mm wheels from 95a-99a will work great for you (4) I ride 3/8" riser but I have to use a 1/4" and an 1/8" to build up to it. (5) Dragon/Fireball bearings aren't a known quantity but the built-in spacers and washer are great and I ride them on my fastest setup. If you use these then do NOT use the washers from your trucks. The bearing has a bulit-in washer. (but any bearings work, just don't get them wet) www.amazon.com/Fireball-Precision-Skateboard-Skateboards-Longboards/dp/B08D3661K4/ref=sr_1_52?dchild=1&keywords=skateboard+bearings&qid=1633381360&sr=8-52
