- English is a major foreign language to learn for most of Japanese people. However, the progress or confidence of using the language is very low for them. I think the problem are many folds. The people's idea of perfectly understanding and speaking are pretty much reasons for them not being able to do so. I would challenge if you watch another American film like "Wicked", try to watch it without subtitles and see how much you understand it. The language learning is tough but the ultimate joy comes out of learning it slowly but surely.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment and share your experiences, I really appreciate that! It made me think about my own experience with language learning. I started to learned English in junior high as part of the mandatory education in China, but it wasn't until high school where I got into American pop culture that I started to fully immerse myself in music and movies did I truly appreciate the language. You made a very good point, that knowing the meaning is completely different from understanding the lyrics word by word. I think without that level of understanding, we cannot be "autonomous", we always have to rely on others to translate, we miss the ability to form our own thoughts or to interpret based on our own experience. I thought about my earlier experience on reading a couple of Murakami's books in Chinese and English, I do feel similar that the English version is easier to read. I want to experiment more with different books and see if that is still the case. I'm currently reading Men Without Women, I hesitated for a long time about this book but got it after watching your video on it. So far, I really enjoy it, especially Kino! After this, I'm going to read some of Kawabata Yasunari's books, I read parts of Snow Country in Chinese when I was a kid, have always wanted to finish it! ちなみに、カナダに住んでるけど、今はテキサスの方が雪あるそうですよ。やばくないね。
テキサスの方が今は雪が多いなんて、地球温暖化のせいでしょうね。日本語、難しいでしょう？漢字なんて覚えるの、私はとっくに諦めました。それに新しい言葉が日々に増えていき、９９％の新日本語、意味見つけるのに苦労してます。
@@expatkaz742 大変ですけど、挑戦を楽しんでる。そうですよね、特に若者の話し方や語彙が難しでしょうか。でも、時々英語も同じ問題がある。しょうがないね。
i wonder what the most efficient language is
One of the criteria is definitely song lyrics in a song, I think. In one line of a song, which language can put meaning accurately there the most. English wins over Japanese for sure. Also the theater musical culture could tell which language could be sung to the tunes naturally. Historically, I am thinking Italian opera vs Gilbert & Sullivan. The latter has very first pitch singing.
