- I'm reading the first chapter of popular YA books I haven't read yet and decide which one I will be finishing!
Will I want to read them all? Will some be DNFed forever?!

America Singer's name is made even worse when you read the book and learn that she's living in a dystopian America and her profession is literally being a singer hahaha
I was like that at first when someone pointed it out, but that is how some names were made back in the past. Names came from jobs and economic status, so I get it, especially coming from a dystopian world.
I thought VA looked and sounded horrible which is why a avoided it for so long. But Holy Crap. It is so good. So much more than a typical Vampire story
I loved reading in middle school but when I got to high school i did not make time for reading. I'm in college now and I found this channel through your beauty channel. I'm reading again and i realized how much I miss it. Thank you.
I'm glad you're enjoying it again!
the first two two books of throne of glass series are fine but they get soooo much better with every book. you should definitely read that series!!
I used to be obsessed with Vampire Academy 👌👌
I almost stopped reading Throne of Glass after the first few chapters but ... now it is one of my favourite series. This series does not have a love triangle I promise you, more like a love octagon;)
The Selection is such a guilty pleasure read, it's not the best but I can't help but love it! throne of Glass get really good as you keep going. But I'd say go with Vampire Academy, sounds fun!!
the selection series is amazing!!
VA gets better with each book!!
Jay G YASS
I agree. The movie was also interesting, but i was SO disappointed with who they chose for Dimitri.
Omg movie dimitri was so disappointing as he is my top fictional boyfriend xxx
throne of glass, I read the first 2 books in german and didn't like them but then I read Heir of Fire in english and daaaamn it was sooo good i loved the plotline and now i'm reading book 4 and its my favourite series lmao
This is something I should really try. I have so many books I really want to read but I never know which one I should pick up next. Glad you enjoyed Vampire Academy. It's on my list of books I really want to read so hopefully I'll get to it sooner rather than later.
Vampire Academy is my all time favorite series :D
Aleksander Skarsgard as Dimitri ❤️
I really liked all of the Vampire Academy books. Red Queen was good but the next two books were disappointing imo. Throne of Glass started off strong as a series, but I have mixed feelings about the rest - I am going to finish the series though.
Throne of glass gets better 😊 I've read the first 4 books. I love them. And Red queen is good too.
I adored Red Queen. Also the Court of Roses and Thorns series by Sarah Maas is great. I enjoyed it over the Throne of Glass series. Loved this!
The Red Queen series is fantastic! All time favorite book series, right now I'm getting started on A Court Of Thorns And Roses!
I love VA so much. It's one of my favorite series and I started reading it when I was about eleven. My favorite book is Shadow Kiss and I also really enjoyed and recommend the spin-off series Bloodlines. It's as strong, if not stronger, in plot than VA.
I have not read any of those books, but you have given me hope to read Red Queen. My online book club gives us a list of different types of books to read throughout the year and one was to read a book by an author younger than you and Red Queen is one of few written by someone younger. I dreaded I would hate reading it, but by the little you said, I'm more open and intrigued.
I'm thinking about picking up VA too and you may have convinced me 😏😏😏😏😏💕
Don't watch the movie though haha It was bad :P
Melissa Serenity the book is definitely better. For me, the movie was more of a nostalgic trip than anything else.
The Red Queen is great! I really enjoyed it 💖
Great video! I have not seen this tag before. Love Red Queen.
Red Queen is my favorite series of all time!!!!❤️❤️ the selection series is also pretty good!
Also, you should read Lockwood and Co. by Jonathan Stroud in the fall. So good and spooky.
Vampire Academy reminds of the early days when I fell in love with reading. Used to find myself spending lunchtime at the library perusing the aisles more and more often. The whole series is a lot of fun. Wait until you meet Adrian Ivashkov.
I really like this tag! I think I might try it lol! Throne of Glass soooo good and gets better with each book! :) the Unbecoming and Vampire Academy are both books I also have to read but now seem interesting!
I LOVE the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer one of my favorite books omg
I read Red Queen, but gave up on the second book. It was just way too similar to many other YA books.
The Throne of Glass series is full of YA clichés, but it's one of my guilty pleasure. Although, it's building on classic characters from YA, the story is fast paced and very enjoyable. And I love the character Manon.
i just finished throne of glass AND love it , i recommend to you, Besos from Buenos Aires !!
I really enjoy your videos. I love the swatches on your hand. 💄💄😉😉😉
Really liked this video concept! And also your lipsticks :)
Do the one with books you want to get rid off! :D
Thank you Emily for this book channel ! I love to find a good English book ! But there's not so much feedback . It helps me to order from Amazon !
I would love to see one of those videos on either sci-fi books or classics! I wanted to get into fantasy YA for a while now (I only read Six of crows duology) so I might give Red Queen a try 😶
I read the VA series when I was 13 and was obsessed and fangirled so hard with my friends. I recently tried to read it again in my 20s and I just couldn't get through it. I still keep the series though because I have so many memories attached to it. Definitely agree that it's geared towards teens.
I totally understand how you pictured Dimitri as Eric from True Blood. I pictured him with blond hair too I just didn't know about Eric when I read the first book. Rose (I think that's her name, it's been a while) is such a badass. I think the bond between them was fascinating.
This try a chapter concept is a great idea! The Selection is good as a quick beach read. I wish it was a little more substantial, but it's fun and easy. The Vampire Academy series is among my top favorites, YA or otherwise. I read the whole series in 10 days -- I love it! Her succubus series is fun too, but it's adult. As for Throne of Glass (and this will be a wildly unpopular opinion), I felt that it was not so bueno. I got as far as 3 1/2 books into the series and had to DNF the rest of the series (which I almost never, ever do.) I felt like the concept was fun and interesting, but the writing was immature and the main character was more eyeroll-inducing than likable. Plus she spent more time thinking about how amazingly badass she was than she did actually doing anything. I've said this on my Goodreads review of the book, but it was like reading a very mediocre fanfiction version of a great book, if that makes sense. Then again, a ton of people love it. I'm curious to see how you fare with the rest of the Vampire Academy series! It's gets better and better as they go.
I loved Vampire Academy!!
The Mara Dyer Trilogy is one of my favorite series! It's so dark and mysterious and the biggest page-turner. It keeps you at the edge of your seat.
As for Throne of Glass: If you read The Assassins Blade before starting Throne of Glass, You'll get a lot more insight on the main character's life (Before and why she ended up where she is at the beginning of Throne of Glass) and it will make you understand her whole situation way better. I also get what you mean about her as a character and the typical YA stuff already in the first chapter, but because this series will have 8 books eventually it takes a while for you to see the characters grow into themselves. The main character is really young still and therefore really snarky but as you read on you'll see them all grow. :)
i loved the selection!😂
I expected to hate it and... now I want to at least finish it haha
Floral ChitChatCity haha right?! I feel as though it is the perfect series if you want some pure entertainment. And I don't think it's fantasy. There are not really any elements of that genre in it. Maybe I'm wrong lol.
Mary V. Yeahh its not fantasy and I'm not much into fantasy either.
YAAAY i'm sooo happy you liked VA! I've been waiting for you to read it for so long :) and if you liked the first book, then I think you'll love the rest! they just get better and better. eeeee I can't wait for you to continue hehe. PS I love Dimitri
you should do another video like this. I really enjoyed this video
I love how you randomly have lipstick swatches on your hand lol. I have followed your makeup channel for a long time. 😁
Excellent choice! I love the Vampire Academy series. The Selection was okay, but really juvenile, in my opinion. As a whole that entire series was pretty awful, I won't even lie. I wouldn't recommend even wasting time reading the first one. I'm almost done with Red Queen right now and I have loved every moment of it. Definitely a good one! As for Throne of Glass, the first book was really "meh" if you ask me. A romance through and through and a poor excuse for a fantasy. It really picks up after that though, so I do recommend it. As for the Mara series, I haven't read them. I can't wait to hear your thoughts, though!
Hi Emily! Big fan of your beauty and book channel. Your lip color is sooo gorg, would love to know what you're wearing!
I'm kind of intrigued by VA but at the same time feel too old lol. Some of the other books you showed looked interesting too so I look forward to your reviews. I love this video idea!!! Doing a version with books your thinking of getting rid of would be awesome!
I loved both Red Queen and the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the others I also want to read
Throne of Glass series is so good. It gets better and better with each book. I'm on Empire of Storms right now. 😄
Loved your choices
I'll be honest I love the throne of glass series to death I have multi copies of each book and even have a while self dedicated to sjm... that being said the first two book in the tog series aren't the best.. don't judge them too harshly. I hope you give the series a chance one day tho
Vampire Academy is such a fun series, definitely not over hyped! Even though the covers are cheesy as are the titles I think the series is more than it seems at first sight. It's definitely not the best of the best but super enjoyable. My personal favorite was #3! I never continued with the spin off series but many people have enjoyed that one a lot as well :)
I read the first chapter of VA a while ago and I hated it
I'll definitely try it again, thanks for the video xx
Emily, please give Trone of glass a chance :) But start with "prequel" The Assassin´s Blade. You will understand main character better. I like that series a lot.
I finished Selection series (5. book) two days ago and it is really bad. OMG.
I am planning to read Red Queen soon and maybe I will give Vampire Academy a try but I think I already saw the movie.
so i just started reading a darker shade of magic by v.e. schwab and i can't believe i haven't read it before now. i kept hearing amazing things about it but it didn't really intrigue me and now i hate myself for passing it by so many times. i'm only 44 pages into it but i'm already so hooked!
I am reading / have read 4/5 of those series (just not Mara Dyer). I actually really enjoy them all - currently reading the third Red Queen book, waiting on the 6th Throne of Glass book (the ending of the 5th was a little disappointing so i'm hoping the 6th makes up for it!), I've read the Vampire Academy series multiple times, it's not perfect but i just really enjoy reading it, and I'm actually reading The Selection series in french! I've read the first 4 books and the 5th is on my TBR, i just need to actually finish the books i've started!
all those swatches on your hand !! 😂
You should read the books that True Blood were based on. Southern Vampire mysteries series by Charlaine Harris. Read them in my later teens around 5 years ago and really enjoyed them!
Alice Wilson I loved the Sookie Stackhouse books!
Makes me feel better not being the only one who haven't read any of these books 📚 I've had the ebook of VA for sooooo long
That was a really cool video! You should film more of them ;)
VA is one of my all time favorite series! 👌🏻💯
I recommend reading the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead. It's a good urban fantasy type book.
Please please please read Throne of Glass. It's one of my favorite series. And also try A Court of Thorns and Roses series
i starded thron of glass also with the first book and i was quite bored but then i read Asassins Blade and the rest of the series and now is my all time favorit series!!! Vampire Academy was for me too childish😐 i am not continuing
I've been thinking of reading VA for sooo long. Maybe I'll pick it up when I finished the current book that I'm reading😂 I've read Red Queen and the 2nd book, I like Red Queen but 2/3s of the 2nd book was VERY boring. The ending on the 2nd book is worth it tho
also those lipstick swatches tho em😂 haha love you!
great video! love this idea, I definitely should do this as well :) thanks for the inspiration
Mara Dyer and The Selection are my favorites of those books. And I didn't expect to like The Selection AT ALL when I started it. It's short, too, so if you don't like it you've only wasted a few hours lol Red Queen has so many things taken from other books that as long as you've read all the popular dystopians than you've basically already read it...
I read the entire selection series and I literally hate all of them (they're so much fun to hate idk) Mara Dyer I'll warn you the romance I feel like takes over the first book but it has really good spooky scenes (I probably went into it thinking its horror more than a horror romance) As for VA I actually think the author might be able to surprise you! She took some different paths that were really cool in the story! I really love that series.
I love The Red Queen and The Selection Series.
I literally sat and read 4 of the 5 selection books one Sunday after thinking I wouldn't like it. I've read red queen too, but not the sequels yet. I am intrigued by the concept enough to keep reading eventually, but the romance in it annoyed me. Need to put Vampire Academy on my list tho!
I read the first 3 books in the Selection series - in one weekend. It's definitely a series that you have to be in the "right" mood for cheesy, angsty, romance. That being said, it had its problems. America's name annoys me SO much and pulls me out of the story every time. I did enjoy Vampire Academy, but oddly have never felt the urge to continue the series. Thanks for doing this video. You've inspired me to do this tag, too.
I think you would like/love the Red Queen and Throne of Glass :) Or at least you'd be so interested on what will happen next 😉
I need the name of that lipstick you are wearing ☺️looks beautiful
gsp flks agreed! I share Emily's love for mauve, & this is right up my alley!
The Selection is a super quick more like guilty read for me. It's fast paced and addicting, but definitely didn't challenge me intellectually - which isn't a bad thing really. I sped through all three of the trilogy and the two sequel books in a week.
DO NOT WATCH THE VAMPIRE ACADEMY MOVIE ITS SO BAD
I did... I hated it haha
hahaha i love it, it's just one of those funny easy watches.
You should read the Covenant series by Jennifer L Armentrout! They are so good and I am 24 and still enjoyed them even though they are YA!
Even if you don't become much of a Throne of Glass fan i'd strongly suggest that you continue because it's one of those series that gets better as they go on :)
Fun topic! One suggestion for the next time you do a "read a first chapter" video: Skip the section where you go through each book at the beginning. You can say what you know about one book, read the chapter, share your thoughts, then go to the next one. That way, you won't have the repetition of describing what you know about the book in the intro segment, and then again when you pick the book up to read it. I would love to see more of these types of videos for different genres.
I read every book you have shown :D
I absolutely love Throne of Glass because it is better than the first pages :D and get's better and better with each book.
I am not a fan of the selection series because America was really annoying.
Read Queen was okay but not soooo great. Vampire Academy ... I loved the first three books but I read it a long time ago.
I read the first chapters of Mara Deyer but never read more :D
Can't wait what you think about all of these books!!
Greetings from Germany
Off topic, but I just wanted to say that I love the shirt you're wearing in this video.
I could not finish Throne of Glass or Red Queen. That last book sounds really interesting.
Wow. I really didn't expect you to like Vampire Academy! That's great!
I found Rose to be soooo annoying to me (even more so than Celaena). Always saying how attractive she is, how boys love her body and so on.. I just couldn't finish this series, but I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
I thought about reading a couple of these but I've found it so hard to start! I've been getting so frustrated with YA novels recently, which was all I read up until now
America Singer made me think of Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. The main character's name is Hiro. Hiro Protagonist. I almost found it unforgivable but I continued to read and really enjoyed it.
I REALLY recommend "Vivian Amberville - The Weaver of Odds" by Louise Blackwick - a recent and very popular release.
YA fantasy, dystopian novel about a teenage girl who can alter odds and reshape events. I cannot begin to tell you how epic this novel is. It will blow your mind away.
I hope you enjoy!
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one of my favourite books!! So good, the writing is incredible too
Umnia Aziz i also love Mara dyer! I read it like two years ago but am always thinking about it
Its so good!! The second book is even better, my favourite. Have you heard about her new book, the Becoming of Noah Shaw?? Comes out in November and I'm SO excited! I love Noah
Umnia Aziz WHAT? I HADN'T heard!!! Definitely buying that 🙌🏽
Yah!! Its a spin off/continuation for the Mara books! The cover is beautiful ew.com/books/2017/05/08/michelle-hodkin-becoming-noah-shaw-mara-dyer/
Umnia Aziz dude you have me so hyped now! Thank you soooooo much
read the chaos walking trilogy by patrick ness!
let's be honest this entire video i kept looking at your eyebrows because they look SO GOOD
Richelle Mead and Sarah J Maas are amazing authors and both have multiple series. If you want less of a teen/ya novel Richelle Mead's Gameboard of the Gods so innovative and cool
I really like this idea of how to pick a book. Red Queen: I read the first and devoured this book last year. I really enjoyed it and I hear Maven is the next big villain to root for. Throne Of Glass: Read early this year and I hated the first book. The 2nd book was better and I hear book 3 really picks up the storyline a lot. I would recommend the ACOTAR books I love that series far better than TOG. The Selection: Wow I read the first book a long time ago and enjoyed it but didn't like book 2. They are very juvenile light fluffy books. America got on my nerves one too many times. Vampire Academy: I have never read this series but I will probably do it soon now that you said it was so good. I haven't read a vampire book in a while and I miss those types of books. I read Twilight, Vampire Kisses, and on my tbr is Shade of Vampire which is ridiculous with like 30 books. Unbecoming of Mara Dyer: Read this earlier this year. I really liked the love interest Noah but never finished the other 2. She is releasing a spin-off to this series all about Noah Shaw later this year. I'm thinking of doing this myself with 5 books. Six of Crows, Lady Midnight, Darker Shade of Magic, The Merciless, and Falling Kingdoms probably.
You need to read "red queen" , it needs to happen now!
The Selection series is pretty good. I've never been into romance and all that kind of stuff, but I really didn't mind The Selection for some reason. It's not amazing, and I only skimmed through the second book, but it's cool if you have nothing better to do. It's just okay for me. Not good, but certainly not bad.
the only reason I'm reading it is because I want to see what happens when she gets chosen in the selection and I want a conclusion tbh
Please don’t kill me emily. But I just read throne of glass and I loved it. The Selection?? totally my jam lol. Still have to read Vampire Academy though, bought it last year and didn’t read it yet (story of my life)
I'm probably in the minority here, but I personally think that Red Queen and Throne of Glass are incredibly overhyped...Vampire Academy is a lot of fun though!
Taylor Robinson I AGREE!!! I read red queen and didn't bother continuing. I just finished ToG and was disappointed. I'm going to read book two only because I heard it's better than book 1...
That guy you mentioned and showed in the pic is Alexander Skaarsgård, he's swedish like me :) his father and all of his siblings are actors too, if you're curious you can always google him :) Thought I might just share some info :)
i've always seen Ben Barnes (Caspian from Narnia) as Dimitri for some reason
the movie isnt good but the books get better over time. honestly the throne of glass books and gameboard of the gods (richelle mead) are great
the Vampire Academy movie is a funny (but failed) satire of all the YA vampire tropes and I appreciate it only if I think of it as a different entity from the book series
Readdd red queeeeeeen soooonnnn
Vampire Academy: it gets better and better, it's not the typical sequel clichés. there is a spin-off, a friend of mine read it as well and loved it. Rose has some good come backs, I liked that in her. The movie has nothing to do with the book, it's almost as bad as eragon. I pictured Dimitri like Hayden Christensen, but must say Alexander Skaasgard would make an amazing Dimitri ;)
Selection: as you said, an easy read, but I found America to be quite funny :) And yes, the selection is a reality show to entertain the kingdom.. not even the prince is much into it.
Throne of glass: that's Caelena's personality: she can kill anyone and loves to brag about it. she's pretty as well and, again, loves to show off. That's why I think it's better to start the series by the prequel, because you can have a much better understanding of who she is and her background. also, the book makes references to characters and scenes from the prequel that won't make any sense for those who did not read it. But I must say I identify a lot with Caelena (never killed anyone neither I'm pretty, but the way she thinks, the kind of mistakes,.. ), so I'm suspictious :p
Love your channel!
You might want to check out Vivian Amberville - The Weaver of Odds. It's a new bestseller of the YA, dystopian fantasy genre about a little girl with the power to shape reality.
Lovely video by the way. keep up the great work!
