  • Scenes of the decaying surroundings from April 2013. The area is being re-purposed into a new residential community.
    A large majority of the main runways remain, as does the original hangar and control tower. A newer tower was built nearby just before closure, but was never outfitted and used.

    My father used to have clearance to the base.... Took me there when I was a young boy when it was about to close.... Too bad all the memories will be paved over with condos, that's all we need is just more condos :/

      LunarKnight101 That's awesome! Was your Dad in the service? There is a new real estate developer in charge now, but most of the remaining base should be intact for a few years. Wish they retained the amazing blimp hangars. Would have loved to witness them!

      Nah, His Father served in the navy from The incarnation of this base in world war 2, the korean war, and the vietnam war overseas. My dad got free medical care and got to go to the fitness center back in the 80s I have recently uploaded a video on youtube exploring the 2 towers. Couldnt get in though to much mesotheilioma and welded doors. Came from one of the tri-towns next to it: Abington. sixten3

    I was stationed at NAS South Weymouth from 1988-91. I've got lots of good memories from my time there.

    Was stationed there from 88-92 and the hangars were huge. I was in main supply and that was a huge wood structure.

    I used to live next door to the base on white st. I have some old pics from 2006 that I'll dig up and post. I wish I kept the pics from the air shows in the 90s. My friend has pics of us as kids playing inside the youth center which is now the cat clinic.

    Very sad, I was stationed at AIMD and HSL-74 from 1985 to 1993. It was a great Air Station. I met Ted Kennedy there when Sowey was put on the chopping block and he helped save it for a few more years. The blimp hangers had rain storms in them....just kidding but they held P-3s just like Moffet Field Ca. did. I was station in VP-62 in Moffet. Great career in the Navy.

      +Paul Peterson It would have been amazing to witness the hangars as you had. Given their massive size, I wouldn't be surprised if they contained storm fronts! Thank you for your service, Paul. Sounds like you had an exciting and fulfilling experience.

      The lumber supporting the structure was massive. Do you know if the lumber was saved or the whole hanger was demolished?

    • @sixten3
      @sixten3  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aside from remnants of the east-side hangar door tracks, there is nothing left of either hangar. Here's a photo of the tracks from 2013: www.flickr.com/photos/marcsenger/8627437687/sizes/l Unsure of how the lumber was used after demo.

    Where is the location of those voltage buildings at #0:20? I live near the Naval Air Station and I am wondering if that building is still standing. Though I know that most of them have been demolished by now.

      SE end off the north-south runway, right next to where the Patriot Day Watertown movie set used to be.

    Hey, can you please help me locate or give me coordinates of that road on 0:32?

    • @sixten3
      @sixten3  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ChrisPlays781 Sure. It's at 42.156254, -70.949251. Construction has taken over this road completely since September, however. I doubt much of anything remains there.

      +Chris playz me and swordfish are both friends, he's Zach in my video you commented on, we went up in mid July to the white tower, it's under patrol now, and is scheduled for demolishment now that the three towns have made a deal with Lstar for underground electricity and water infrastructure, so by mid 2016 we may see most of the buildings gone as thy start to redevelop...
