    Beautiful! I'm fourth generation climbing the rock -- my grandmother, her sisters and parents climbed up about 1905, There must have been some kind of trail then, because there were other tourists with them, but no steps or steel rails. And all the women were wearing corsets and ankle length skirts! My great-aunt slipped and almost fell off, but some guy grabbed her by her braids and saved her.
    My mom started making the climb in the late 30's after the steps were put in by the WPA. I've been climbing as long as I can remember. I've been going up the rock for 54 years, but I think my trip this year will be my last -- my lungs aren't what they used to be.

      That's an awesome story Pat!!! Loved it!! What about other generations after you?
      I loved that hike but my family was a bit terrified to say the least. You have any pictures of your grandmother or other relatives making that hike? Thanks for sharing!!

    I climbed Moro Rock back in 1960 with some of my family members, but frankly as a little kid (five years old at the time) I just couldn't make it to the top (almost to the top, but I had to stop--the rocks and the railings on either side of the trail/steps just didn't seem safe to me), but my father and one of my sisters did make it to the top. But, sadly, some have died over the years--I heard one terrible story about a man who went beyond the railing to pick a wildflower that was growing out of a rock fissure to give it to his fiancee but he fell to his death, and his fiancee had to be literally carried down because she was in shock. This video brings back memories of that trip, and I would not encourage anyone to take small children or anyone afraid of heights up that rock. Too bad the videographer didn't show just how steep the view is when you look down from that narrow path--but I realize some who are into challenging themselves might actually enjoy the trek. But once was enough for me. The video literally made my heartbeat quicken and I actually felt a bit queasy as he ascended.

    I climbed Moro Rock last year with my sister. I wanted to turn around about half way up until I saw a little girl ( no more than 6) bounding down the stairs. It's both terrifying and breathtaking.

      Yes!! I found myself leaning towards the inner part of the walkway to stay clear of the edge in some places.

      +Create -- that is an apt description. I was perfectly fine when I did the climb long ago. And now when I see this video my heart is in my throat. The guy who steps outside of the rails at the very top is not your average Joe. Nice to have a defined safety zone.

    I climbed Moro Rock when I was 12 and away from our Girl Scout camp for two days. The camp was Camp Timberloft. There were 15 or so of us and our camp councilors. I remember climbing vividly and I remember there were no railings on the mountain side of the rock. The year was 1960. Would someone else be able to tell me what the trail was like once you would have reached the rock portion? I can remember being at the very top, sitting on an edge, dangling my feet over and looking thousands of feet down to the tiny trees below.

    It always feel elated and inspired watching someone hike up Moro Rock. I did the climb more than 20 years ago and I think of it often. Time was suspended in that hour and a half -- my encounter with the transcendent. Fortunately I did not have to deal with gabby people -- there is a time and a place for yakking loudly and I think that Moro Rock deserves a reverential silence -- to be still and blissful in the midst of adventure.

      +bassplay12 -- Alas, I'm living and working in Flatland right now, so I'd have to fly to Burbank to get back to Sequoia. But I will. I hope to make it happen this coming spring. How about you? Do you get there often?

    I've been thinking about getting this camera. You've got me pretty much convinced. What's nice is not only the great wide screen and HQ video but also the stabilization seems very good. I remember doing the Haleakala Sunrise tour in Maui. It's nearly 10,000 ft above sea level. You drive up very early and you watch the sun rise from above the clouds. There were stairs to go to the highest point which of course I did. The video cam I had wasn't doing so well as it was very cold to the point the video cam eventually seized up. That would have never happened with this Go Pro. Thanks for sharing your adventures!

    • @bassplay12
      @bassplay12  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure thing Lori.....best of luck. It is a very versatile camera. I just wish the GoPro came with the backpack already installed. The backpack lets you see what you're filming. Especially on this hike it would have been good to know that I was filming more of the sky than down below in the canyon.

    • @la196
      @la196 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      bassplay12 I had no idea it would not come with the ability to see what you're recording. I'll look more into the backpack. I'm sure it's worth the extra expense for the quality video you get from the GoPro but I agree with you on the fact it should just be standard to come with it. Thanks again for your feedback.

    It's actually way higher than it looks he didn't really have the camera pointed down it was 3000 feet in the air and looked way way way way WAY higher than it does on film.

    • @bassplay12
      @bassplay12  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2
