- In this video I review the GML 8200 Parametric EQ. The beautiful sounding EQ pried at £7000. Hear how good it sounds in the audio demos and hear my thought on if I am going to install it into my studio.

Thanks for the GML 8200 review !!! You are a great fellow !!!
You have great ears. Nice songs, can really hear what GML 8200 is doing. Enhancement that it brings is very pleasing sounding.
Pleasing sounding is the key word here, that's how I hear it. Very pleasing to the ear.
Thanks for the VDO. There aren't many out there on this unit. How do you make sure both L and R are equal? do you have an analyzer plugin on the return in your DAW?
It's very tricky to match left and right perfectly. The 9500 version is stepped, which is the one I want. Only issue is they no longer do this version and have no plans on making more. I didn't keep this units due to recall purposes and the fact that in mastering I need the stepped pots.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Yes only when I watched your VDO til the end that I got the answer. I have one and thinking about selling it, so weighing pros and cons now.
@SamIntharaphithakOFFICIAL no question it is a quality EQ. One of the best. For me though that's a huge con. Plus also I'm never going to need +/-20db of gain.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I totally agree. Thank you for your replies, just subbed, keep them great VDO's coming my man.
@@SamIntharaphithakOFFICIAL thank you. Appreciated
To my ears, that thing really shined on the blues example. Wow.
Yeah, that track is my favourite for showing off good gear, watch the Blackbox HG-2 video I did last week and how that makes the same song sing. The lead shines.
IMO that one got way too thin and brittle sounding. Definitely a muddy track, but I think he attacked the low end too aggressively.
Yes the review I’ve been waiting for!
it would be cool a comparison with new acustica audio green 5 ultra, even better seeing some plugin doctor freq graph
Need to deffo keep the GML.
Ur an Artist and that’s one of the best Paint 🎨 Brushes in the game .
for when a demo with the HDE-250 - Custom Audio Germany? thanks
Is it possible to compare GML 8200 or Prism Sound MASELEC MEA-2 / thank you very much for your great work!!!
I plan to compare GML, Maselec, Goly, Buzz and SPL PQ. Another shoot out.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Huge intrigue! Look forward to! Thank you!
@@AudioAnimalsStudio It'll be interesting to hear if you like the GML better. There's a Gearspace thread where people share tips on how to get the 8200 to balance. I might look into getting one of these as it's thousands cheaper than a Buzz or PQ. Though the new model SPL Passeq does look interesting.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Do you like the Gml 8200 more for surgical use than the mea2
@@1kingstan795 prefer the mea 2. GML is great but the Mea is killer
Big Gunz comin out P 🔥 ain’t playing 👍🏾
really thinking about getting the 8200... do you mind making a comparison video (with the same audio material) between the 8200 and Maselec ? would be awesome, PS. love your channel!
I will see if I can get around to making this video. Will add it to the list
BEAUTIFUL !!! AMAIZING VLOG THANK YOU !!!
How would you think this would fit in a recording setup? would it have any place in a recording chain?... I'm wondering if it could give something to a very soulful singer
That's where I would have it. A recording chain would be perfect. My only issue with this one is from mastering perspective, it isn't stepped. Anywhere where you don't need to recall the unit such as recording it is going to be at the top of it's game.
One of my absolute favorite EQs for recording…but yeah, not for mastering. With a gain control of +/- 15, the first mm of throw on the knob controls nearly all of the typical boost/cut levels we’d use in mastering, so it’s just too difficult with those microscopic level discrepancies to do a great job consistently…so with that much gain on tap over such a short twist on the dial, it’s just too potent for mastering. If you’re off by even a little, the levels aren’t going to be a perfect match and that’ll throw the stereo image to hell within the L/R levels across the master. Mastering version (the 9500) would be perfect I bet. Been looking for years…can’t find one. Great videos, love the channel.
@jacksnax4guitar460 I'm in the same boat. I love the EQ and I want the EQ I just need the mastering version for every reason you just said. Sounds like we're going to be going into a bidding war next time one comes available.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio you’ll win that one surely…I’m all tapped out after buying a Knif Soma and Fairchild knockoff.
@@jacksnax4guitar460 oh nice. What fairchild copy did you go for? I've tried most and settled on the UnFairchild as it was the one that sounded most like the original with a few added features that are really helpful. I'm yet to try the Herchild.
The Nebula Plugin
Surge EQ sounds just about identical to the 8200 Hardware you just made my day...because in a way...I basically have this...at least 90& of it in my Surge EQ......
Respectfully,
WHAT??! NO 😂😂😂
I also have the surge EQ & this sounds MUCH, MUCH better. The surge EQ is one of my go to plugin EQ’s and this sounds worlds apart…
The good thing is you don’t need to have one of these to make GREAT records. However, I am completely floored by how much better this hardware sounded.
Sounds really tight and nice the lowend, and brings some clarity or chewy'ness to the sound ! Shame about the non stepped thing =(
CLARITY 🥶🥶🥶
can you please do a comparison with the relatively new plugin by Pulsar that emulates the 8200? thank you
Yes this is on the list. Will be interesting to see if they are anything alike.
Sound wise - between this and MusEQ, which do you prefer for modern pop, hip hop?
I'd go with the GML over the MusEQ
I'm curious about the recall thing. Is it just because the controls are so sensitive, or is it more like it just sounds different on different days even with the exact same settings? It's just weird because I've experienced stuff like that, but more with older Tube Guitar Amps(like vintage Marshalls), and some vintage tube gear, but not with more modern solid state gear. Why do you think it is?
It's because the controls are so sensitive.
Paul, is detented like an inferior version of stepped? Are Black Box and Portico II stepped? The latter seems to be advertising that it's at least detented. I'm just curious how crucial stepped versions are on things besides an eq.
The blackbox isn't stepped or detented. But this isn't an issue with the blackbox as the markers are spaced evenly from let's say 1 to 10. The Portico is detented so you can find a point the knob drops into. Making recall easy. This is the same with the SPL PQ and Goly PG. The Buzz and Vertigo VSE-2 however are stepped and clicks from point to point. This is what I like. Means you can recall a piece of gear perfectly as it was.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Thanks for the clarification. I wonder if it's worth the money to do the stepped version of the new Stamchild. The clicks on the Shadow Hills are very convenient I must say. There's a hardware vs plugin video of the GML 8200 vs Pulsar 8200. I'll have to watch that. A very comprehensive video of the VSM-2 would be interesting.
Since it's so hard to find a Black Box, I'm debating about either a VSM-2 or Sa2rate2. For mastering, I seem to get the best results with the Sa2rate2.
@viciousblissvideos the Vertigo is incredible and so is the blackbox. For me both better than the sat2rate
@@AudioAnimalsStudio How about VSM-2 vs Black Box? Vintage King is telling me no Black Box til December. They have Sa2rate in stock and Thomann has the VSM-2 for $6666. I’m not a big fan of the VSM-3 plugin. VSM-4 was much better. I was just thinking of using the Sa2rate2 for a while and getting the others later. Maybe I could do the Vertigo if I went cheaper on the eq and got the Passeq or GML used.
If you ever did a comprehensive VSM-2 video, that would be tremendous. The extra inserts would help as I can only do four stereo pieces through my Lynx at once.
Still possibly working on an Alpha too. I’m just not sure if it should be a priority when I have the Shadow Hills and soon the Stamchild MKII.
@viciousblissvideos best thing to do is tell your supplier I want to buy one and need to demo them all first before I buy them. Only you know what you want and need.
there's a 9500 for mastering right ? why not that one ?
That's the one I want. I just can't get hold of one new.
@@AudioAnimalsStudiowhy did they stop making them?
@@kennethdaniels I think it's an issue with regards to getting the parts to build them. I don't like buying second hand for a few reasons.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Crazy there are parts issues these days. I personally don’t like buying second hand outboard gear or mics either.
i have the GML 9500 , kicks all Eq's !!! killer
That's the one to have. I'm still on the lookout for 2.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio succes in finding one , they go fast when one pups up
@retomode2865 no joy as yet. I contacted GML regarding 2 new ones but they said they physically can't build them due to parts if I recall rightly. I know of 1 used one that I potentially can get if I can convince the guy to sell me it.
Hell yeah!
I hearing the GML 8200 impact better than the Buzz or MEA2. Sounds very clean/clear. Feel like it would complement my Massive Passive nicely. 🤤
seven grand. holy cow. you know I think it would look sweet in white .....it would sound better too :)
Demo tracks sound great!
Acustica Green for the win!
Interesting 👍👍
I totally get your issues with the unit Paul. But dam... That sounds good it seems to manipulate frequencies effortlessly and beautifully
So what you are telling me is I should buy this EQ and find a way to deal with recalling it? Because if that's what your telling me, it may just be the nudge to push me to get it.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio o gosh no. That wasn't what I meant at all. I totally get what your issues with recalling are. Having said that, if there was ever a unit where you had to figure out a way to do a "messy" recall, this just might be it. But no pressure :)
For the recall reason, I don’t think you should get it. I’m not a mastering engineer but I think I wouldn’t want to deal with the recall issues. Sounds amazing though. Would love one for tracking.
@owlmuso I'm really tempted to just get it and deal with the issue of recall if it arises. I just need some peer pressure haha.
@kennethdaniels you talk sense and you are right. I just can't deny how good it sounds.
