I have PTSD and have major issues with depression and anxiety, and when my therapy was stuck and making no progress, Tom Hank's speech about having to hold on and survive even when there isn't any sign of any possible hope because you never know what the next tide could bring actually would have helped. I remember a lot of people were lukewarm about this movie because they loved Tom Hanks' performance but found the ending disappointing because they wanted a definitively happy ending as a payoff for all the struggle that preceded rather than something so open ended. To me the ending epitomized the idea that hope rather then a guarantee is what keeps the survivors in life motivated.
I think the ending, though not the typical Hollywood happy ending, is much more realistic and that's what I appreciated about this movie, plus Tom hanks' commitment to it by losing about half his body weight, requiring him to film his various parts about a year apart. I too wish it had done better (or at least had been appreciated more).

Hey Dasha, you asked about Tom Hanks losing weight for the role in the second half of, "Castaway". The movie was filmed in two parts, with a one-year break in between for Tom Hanks to get into shape for the rest of the movie. During the break, Robert Zemeckis filmed the movie, "What Lies Beneath". He even used the same crew for both movies to ensure everyone was available and had steady work in between.

This is movie is one that I watched for the first time, twice. As a kid, it was a cool "what if you were on a deserted island" thing where he deals with relatable survival problems and talks to a ball, and then there's some talking stuff at the end that takes an oddly long time to end. Rewatching it as an adult, I was surprised at the ending, and realized that his fiancé and his friend with the dying wife were actually the most important part of the movie. The thing is that he was already on an island of his work and his plans and perfect life he was trying to craft, and in the end his greatest regret was not being present for his loved ones when it mattered most.

Yes he lost weight. They did some filming, then took 4 months off. During the 4 months Tom starved himself to lose a bunch of weight and grew his hair/beard. Then they restarted filming.
Actually, filming was halted for a year(March 1999-April 2000) for Hanks to grow his hair and lose weight. During that time Zemeckis and the crew filmed "What Lies Beneath".
When he said to Wilson that he wishes he was Dr wilson his dentist, he said his real Dentist is actually named Spaulding, it's ironic because Spaulding is another large manufacturer of basketballs/volleyballs.
Saw it in theaters when I was little. It was truly amazing. The scenes from the peak of the island; where he constructed the noose at. My God; it felt massive in the theater. Fantastic film.
Yeah, . . . An absolute gem of a movie. 2 scenes come to mind when I rewatch this once every year, the part when Tom leaves the island and him saying sorry to Wilson - scenes that show the emotional range of Hanks' acting - a real legend indeed. Anyway, great reaction Dasha, can't wait for the next one -
The fact that you mention there is no music and almost no dialogue for most of the movie and yet you never get bored with this movie. When an actor can give that kind of performance that it doesn’t need music or words it says a lot about his skill and talent. To me the reason that package saved his life was because the wings are what gave him the idea to use the porta-potty as a sail to get him past the coral reef. The reef was causing the waves to break and it was why he couldn’t just float off the island and why he hit the coral and cut himself. He needed a way to get over the waves and the wings gave him the idea. I’m sure it was a double meaning that it gave him hope but without the sail (the porta-potty) he never would have gotten off the island.
8:05 "Now this sounds like outdoor sounds I play when I'm having troubles to sleep." Ah. White noise. Yeah. That's actually a well established phenomenon. Human beings do _not_ sleep best with a background of total _silence._ We sleep best with a background of white _noise._ These sounds (rain, wind, rivers, streams and such) stimulate theta brainwaves which are the brainwaves of _sleep._ I rely on them _myself_ from time to time.
It is EXCEEDINGLY hard to make a fire without the right tools. We think we just rub two sticks together (because we've seen it in countless movies and cartoons) and that's all it takes. No. The average person would probably take several hours to figure out how to do it, if they could do it at all. Zemeckis did a great job with this, getting rid of the music while he is on the island to make us feel even more isolated from the world. It only returns when he is about to escape from it. Hanks filmed the two parts - skinny Hanks and fat Hanks - about a year apart. _That's_ dedication!

Cast Away was a really impactful movie because it came before there were any of these survival shows. People didn't know much about any of that stuff and it kinda slapped them into reality. The woman he delivers the package to is actually a talented country music singer. Lari White
Another great reaction Dasha. I too got tears towards the end when I first saw it. And the plane crash scene was brutal And Tom is so good in everything he does. Yet another character that he owned I also to this day find it interesting that it’s called Cast Away and not Castaway. Both could make sense giving the movie’s context
CAstway shows we all need that human connection with another living creature. And when that is absent we invent one in our imagination. People in the wilderness reach out to wild animals and make them pets for companions. Tom Hanks only had Wilson. So when Wilson floats away, it's like a gut punch we feel his desperation, such a clever way to tap into the human psyche

I used to live near the location in the plains at the end of the movie. Amarillo is about 60 miles from that spot. When Tom Hanks was filming there he met with some of the locals and their children. Everyone said he was one of the nicest persons you could meet. I've been a fan since then!

From IMDB: To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus 4. Extremely resourceful 5. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Belinda (the Winged lady). Inside the first package was her divorce papers. 6. The speech where he starts with, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me. 7. Wilson was Chuck's connectivity to sanity. That's why he kept talking to him.
I really give credit to Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis. It's not easy to make an interesting movie where there's not that much dialogue and there's only one character for most of the film. Great choice, and great reaction!
26:33 _"Ohhh._ Oh, I _see._ So he made it like a, um, how do you call this thing that, like, where- I don't remember how it's called, but I understand on the ships." A sail. A makeshift sail. This is why Chuck couldn't raft back out to _sea,_ earlier in the movie. Every watercraft small enough for him to _paddle_ was _too_ small to get over the huge _waves_ that pushed back toward the island until fate brought him the wall of a port-o-potty and he realized it was broad enough and light enough that, if properly secured, it could serve the purpose of a _sail_ and get him _over_ those waves.
I've got relatives from Fiji where this film was shot. Two goofs they ALWAYS mention. First, GREEN coconuts do not fall of coconut trees, only older coconuts. Second, the island is Monuriki about 1.75 miles away East-Northeast is the island of Yanuya with a boat-dock / gas station / market / honkytonk-bars, all visible from the beach where this was shot. And, YES, Tom Hanks first put ON weight for the movie, then LOST weight and grew out a real beard- I remember at the time that Hollywood magazines were "CONCERNED" and speculating that Tom Hanks dramatic body changes were in indicator of cancer, addiction, or schizophrenia.

There was actually 1 year in between the early scenes and the scenes that were after 4 years. It was planned and in that time, Tom Hanks followed a diet that he thought he might have if he were really on that island. He really did lose the weight.
Hey Dasha, if you love Tom Hanks, you should react to the following films he's in: - Philadelphia - Splash - Toy Story films - Big - A League Of Their Own - Apollo 13
I landed on the water in a helicopter on Easter Sunday of 2005 about twenty miles offshore. I was picked up and brought to safety by a shrimp boat. The helicopter is somewhere at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico near the Louisiana coast. The woman Tom Hanks spoke to at the crossroads at the end of the movie was a singer, songwriter and actress named Lari White. She had a beautiful singing voice but sadly passed away from cancer.
Dasha got the point of the movie, I'm 51 and I wish I could've done a lot of things differently, but even I can appreciate I never needed to search for water or make fire....! if I had the internet on a island with Dasha laugh and commentary I could survive.❤️
fun fact: lines were written and read off camera for "Wilson" for Tom Hanks to act with. and Tom Hanks is the only actor that could make me cry over that ball!
The thing attached to the raft that was stuck on the sinking wreckage was a survival pack. They usually contain a flare gun, emergency transponder, water purification tablets, first aid kit, etc.
I knew you would like this movie Dasha. Fun fact: Whales are known to help guide boats that are adrift in the ocean in real life. There are many many reported cases of this. Some are on video. And I can say from first hand experience that dolphins love to swim with boats just for fun. Im a HUGE advocate for oceanlife health and happiness. Whales and dolphins are to be protected at all costs. They're our best friends in the ocean.
I know Tom Hanks is the star of the movie, but also the writing and the directing totally pull off the desperation and isolation in Castaway. Robert Zemeckis strikes again, from Forrest Gump to Rodger Rabbit, to Back to the Future. Now you just have to finish it off with "Contact", "What Lies Beneath". And also "Rain Man" (not Rob Zemeckis but you'll love it.)
Also for years now I have wanted to get a volleyball and make it look like Wilson. Also RIP Wilson and hello to Wilson Jr who was show in the end in the car he was driving. Also I believe that the main character went ahead and turned back around and went a date with the farm blacksmith Lady
LOL they make 'em with pre-made handprints now, so no bodily injury necessary 🏐 pretty funny to see an ad for the handprint-Wilson in sporting goods sale flyers.

The thing is that he was already on an island of his work and his plans and perfect life he was trying to craft, and in the end his greatest regret was not being present for his loved ones when it mattered most.
Never thought id cry over a volleyball
Love your reactions because I enjoy seeing how you process your commentary from your native Russian heritage into English. Honestly I'm amazed by the tremendous strides
you've made in understanding the English language in both oral and written forms in such a short period of time, you are the BEST Dasha. By the way is your sister doing as well also.
Some parts of the South Pacific are so isolated that, if you're alone in there, chances are the closest people to you are the astronauts in the International Space Station whenever it flies over.
Its just crazy that anything tom hanks does its guarenteed you'll cry in his film lol he is so good and genuine
"WILSON!"
Dasha, you'll never look at a Volleyball the same again.
Honestly, my favorite part is the whale that stays with him until the ship finds him.
Dasha, your reviews always make me laugh and warm my heart. Keep up the good work, pretty girl.
8:05 "Now this sounds like outdoor sounds I play when I'm having troubles to sleep."
Ah.
I HAVE to have noise and usually a fan or I can't sleep right.
I love watching your videos because you really get into the movie. You show your true emotions. Plus when there is Russian in it you translate it and get so excited, very cool. Hope you do Rocky 4 some day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reactions with us.
Hi honey!🤗 I've just gotta say... You're amazing!🤩 I appreciate u & all the hard work u clearly put in2 your awesome content! Thank u!
Im just startin this 1, but wanted 2 get that in while there's a chance u might be able 2 read it b4 it's completely drowned out lol! So much love 2 u girl (& any1 else who may read this!) from Australia xo 😘 💜🇦🇺
PUPPY!!! 🐕🥰
Wilson was my favorite character. Wilson had all the best lines in the film. 🎥 ✌️♥️🌹
And the plane crash scene was brutal
And Tom is so good in everything he does. Yet another character that he owned
I also to this day find it interesting that it’s called Cast Away and not Castaway.
For many in the last few years our Wilson is youtube and social media where we pretend to have human connections.
@@drewpamon Shout into the void or shout in the city. Only difference is most people in the city will ignore you. At last here you can get a response. lol
Dasha, my daughter started watching this movie as I was going to work. I wouldn't give her any spoilers of course. I just told her "You're probably going to cry about something you never thought you'd cry about." She called me on work to ask "Were you talking about Wilson?" I nodded yes. Yeah baby girl, YES. WILSON
I've seen you post this story on a couple of other reactions to this movie. What is really funny, is your story was in my head when Dasha saw the moment when Chuck lost Wilson. Then I came down to the comments and here you are! 😁
@@jollyrogerhobbies2386 A good story should always be shared. Plus I think I only posted it on one other reaction channel. But it's a fun story to share. The writing in the movie is amazing. To make us love a volleyball so much. They know how to touch us in the deepest places.
@@jollyrogerhobbies2386 yes I've seen a lot of people respond with the same exact thing about Wilson. I have to say that I'm a New York Gen X biker. Believe me I've done a lot of things and I've seen a lot of things in my day. But when he had to leave Wilson in that water I flipped out. I was literally screaming Wilson along with him and sobbing as I watched that. I'm NOT someone who cries very easily at all. I've got friends who know me for 30 years who tell you they've seen me cry MAYBE five times in that timeframe. But for me, losing Wilson was very emotional and a huge connection with this movie. This is one of my true favorites of Tom Hanks movies and I'm a fan from way back when he was in Splash with Daryl Hannah.
😉🏐❤️🤘🧜♀️
32:03 "They are not very considerate. Raw fish?"
Seriously. Seafood? This guy has spent just over four years on an _island,_ _alone,_ and someone figured he's probably not sick of _this_ stuff, yet. Are there coconuts, _too?_
It's been more than _four years_ since this guy has had a _burger_ or a _pizza._ Did it occur to _no_ one to bring any of _that?_
You have a beautiful soul dasha. This is the only movie that I cried over a ball. Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actor's of all time. Tom and Robert are like peas and carrots. 😃
I used to live near the location in the plains at the end of the movie. Amarillo is about 60 miles from that spot. When Tom Hanks was filming there he met with some of the locals and their children. Everyone said he was one of the nicest persons you could meet. I've been a fan since then!
For more Robert Zemeckis movies: "What lies beneath" (2000), "Contact" (1997) and "Allied" (2016) .... All, good, all different genres, all very recomendable.....
I love Contact
"What lies beneath" is tied to "Cast Away" because it is the movie Zemeckis shot while Tom Hanks was losing weight for the second half of "Cast Away".
@@oldgregs9559 As do I. It was even my very first ever DVD purchase.
The best love story ever... because so realistic.
Of course she won't wait for him, stupid to think she would
I think that was the saddest part, because you can't be angry with her or everyone else for moving on with their lives. What a tragic love story. My little heart was broken when I watched this as a kid lol
@@lilscenechick1995 If a person is capable of replacing the love of their life within 2 years, they are shallow AF. I AM angry at her. She never even had a confirmation that he was dead... oh well, on to the next LOVE of my life.
@@fgoogle5576 Helen Hunt was 37 when this came out. If a woman wants to have her own children then she better meet someone and make it happen
@@donaldshotts4429 Thanks for the biology lesson Don, but:
1. There is NO indication in the movie that she is either 27 or 37...actors are skilled at make believe.
2. A modern woman doesn't need marriage for a child (adoption, artificial insem, just a drunk night out).
3. I'm sad... let's have babies. Although I don't love you...you're rich enough. Sounds really fair to the dentist, Tom Hanks, AND the children whom will certainly live in a broken home by the time they are teens. Sure Don, it's ALL about that poor woman... it clearly doesn't affect anyone else.
Wilson was the first time I ever cried in a movie....
Dasha is the most satisfying reactor of them all because she never fails to have the best reactions to big scenes. She always shows so much heart and in every single video she has at least 1 or 2 interpretation questions that are so adorable- you can't help but smile. Love her to death.
Really enjoy the channel..you are one of about 3 reactors I watch regularly because you guys do a great job of balancing talking and watching. Keep up the great work, I'll be back for the next movie!
Great reaction, Dasha. You were really into it. Thanks.
1. It's a good thing he wasn't strapped in that plane. He would have died.
2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank and file worker either. He's an executive.
3. From IMDB: To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy.
Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus
4. Extremely resourceful
Hi Dasha, I just wanna say keep staying true who you are while making these videos, you’re so amazing and pure as a human being😊
I really give credit to Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis. It's not easy to make an interesting movie where there's not that much dialogue and there's only one character for most of the film. Great choice, and great reaction!
Your love for you’re homeland is so sweet! 🥰
...and I lost her all over again. 💔 😢 😭
14:34 "He's not _looking!_ _Look!_ Come on! _Look!"_
😆 I had a similar reaction.
“Wilsonnnnnnnn!”
It’s a special movie that can bring you to tears over a volleyball. Good thing you had tissues ready.
26:33 _"Ohhh._ Oh, I _see._ So he made it like a, um, how do you call this thing that, like, where- I don't remember how it's called, but I understand on the ships."
A sail.
Another wonderful reaction by the delightful Dasha!
One of my favorite moments in ANY of your videos is the puppy cameo. 🥰❤
In the movie Tom Hanks references Dr. Spaulding to Wilson as a coincidence because Spaulding is also a manufacturer of athletic sports balls.
This is such a sad movie, but brilliant acting from Tom Hanks and a fantastic survival story!
Dasha, I have watched many of your videos. I would not have kept watching if you were not the genuine, sweet person you are. I hope, in this current time's turmoil in Eastern Europe, that no one has made negative comments toward you for being from Russia. Governments do not get along with governments, but people get along with people. You are a very bright light in an increasingly dark world. I am from the USA and I welcome you to the Western Hemisphere. You are the kind of person everyone needs. Thank you for starting your TH-cam channel. I will keep watching. ♥️
Excellent reaction. Thank you. Hugs for your puppy. ;)
Tom Hanks is the actor of a generation.
The first time I saw this was at the house of a relative who had a top-of-the-line surround sound system. The sound design is just breathtaking
an incredible movie was excited to see you were watching it. I didn't think how the scenes in Russia could be so confusing for you but it makes sense hearing English and Russian at the same time not quite saying the same things. Have seen this many times and don't like to see the shot with his tooth myself.
Great reaction Dasha! Wished I'd seen it earlier. 👍👸❤
Cute puppy. I really like your reactions it's like watching the movie for the first time. Your reactions cheer me up. thank you
Wonderful commentary. I love it when you express your honest emotions. Thank you.
Haven't dropped in for a while. I see lovely Dasha has lost none of her charm and her waterworks are still highly functional. As usual, a thoughtful and perceptive reaction, everything a first-time watch should be. Thanks for the re-experience, sweetie. You will have realised by now that Hanks is good value in everything. A personal favourite is the 2002 Sam Mendes noir thriller 'The Road to Perdition'. Check it out.
There was actually 1 year in between the early scenes and the scenes that were after 4 years. It was planned and in that time, Tom Hanks followed a diet that he thought he might have if he were really on that island. He really did lose the weight.
The ending to this movie always gets me
Hey Dasha, if you love Tom Hanks, you should react to the following films he's in:
- Philadelphia
- Splash
- Toy Story films
- Big
- A League Of Their Own
- Apollo 13
There's also Road to Perdition and Catch Me If You Can.
-Chuck: WIIIILLSOOOOOOONN......

WILSON!!! I'M SORRY, WILSON!+
Dasha got the point of the movie, I'm 51 and I wish I could've done a lot of things differently, but even I can appreciate I never needed to search for water or make fire....! if I had the internet on a island with Dasha laugh and commentary I could survive.❤️
This is the only movie that can make you cry about the ball... :D
@ 34:47 ...... what a cute dog!!!!!
fun fact: lines were written and read off camera for "Wilson" for Tom Hanks to act with.
and Tom Hanks is the only actor that could make me cry over that ball!
You've nearly watched all of my favourite movies in the last year!
Captain Phillips is a good movie with Tom Hanks 👍
The thing attached to the raft that was stuck on the sinking wreckage was a survival pack. They usually contain a flare gun, emergency transponder, water purification tablets, first aid kit, etc.
Wilson should have won for best supporting actor.
Fantastic review and I love your doggy too
I knew you would like this movie Dasha.
You were so great Dasha!!!
tom hanks is one of my favourite actors
I cry every time when Wilson floats away.
I never picked up, until watching reaction videos, that the title of this movie is not "Castaway" but "Cast Away". It adds something different to it.
Contact is a great call. I’d also like to see Groundhog Day.
@@karphunt3r848 Dasha did Ground hog day already. She did it in December.
Hi Dasha... I was trying to decide what to watch and then I noticed this one.
Hmm. Dasha watching Cast Away? Yeah, that sounds good. I'll watch that.
How many great movies has Tom Hanks been in?
Forrest Gump
Saving Private Ryan
Big
Splash
Cast Away
Joe Vs. The Volcano
Apollo 13
...
... and, of course, that Carly Rae Jepsen video.
