As I've been learning about these newer systems, I think I'm hearing there are two options I want to consider. The first possibility is to make the extra effort to bolt 4" wood posts firmly to the joists underneath, then buy hardware to go over those posts, and rails between. That way I need to notch the flooring around the posts coming from below. The second option is to buy a railing that bolts onto the face of the flooring, with heavy screws that go into joists or other meaty wood below, leaving the composite decking intact without need for notching it. I gotta think the former trades extra effort for more structural integrity. Do you have any thoughts as to which is better, or which you would recommend?

Great tutorial! Do you have any videos on how to set the post covers over the 4X4's? They are very sloppy when you slide them over the post so how do you set them so that they're plumb and don't move?

You lay out spaces, not spindles. Take your total length plus the width of your spindle and divide it by 4½" plus the width of your spindle. 4½" is max space by code, spindles in this case are ¾".
For e×ample just say our span is 87¾". Add ¾. 88.5"÷5.25=16.857 spaces. Like stairs you cant have a part of a step. Now take 88.5"+17 spaces =5.205". Add this to your memory. Now add memory to itself repeatedly til you"ve reached total run, by hitting recall plus recall plus recall etc. This gives you the far side of your spindle so you must x-back of your lines. If you want centers just start out with total run plus ½ spindle. This gives perfect spaces. If you're really smart, do this when laying out frame and or at least newel posts. You can absorn odd spaces between house and 1st newel if need be
    Just like doin stairs (kinda)

What’s going on with that composite on your rim joist? It’s protruding in the middle…
I’m not talking smack as I would put your decks quite high in the top 10 I’m just wondering because I’ve never seen that on any of your jobs before.

Nice video. I'm installing Timbertech Radiance railing on my PVC deck. My 16 step staircase is at 32deg. The Timbertech alum round balusters come precut at 36 deg. Do you just recut the angle with miter saw?

I just spent $4k on rail and baluster kits. Neither box included the 2”screws for the balusters. I’m dumbfounded. Going to try deck mate screws tomorrow but worried they are either too course or too think. And they have a countersink head. All other screws were included. 7 boxes of railing and 4 boxes of balusters and I’m stuck with no way to fasten them. It just blows my mind that they have to be ordered separately.

Followed this step by step, as the instructions in the box are terrible. This was definitely a learning curve for me on the first section. The rest should go much quicker. Thank you for this!

If you have a longer stick than your rail you can find the end measurements way easier with no math.
