Beautiful ❤ I was actually looking for a vintage sewing machine patching for stretchy materials, but this is beautiful, requires only yarn and no need of a machine. No waste, less need for new materials. I also like the look of very visible mending, specially because it helps spread the word and wear it with pride. Thank you! 😃
Hey Betty 😃 Thank you for the suggestion, I agree a contrasting thread would have made it much more visible. Next time I upload a video showing the darning technique, I will make it using a contrasting thread 😊
Great tuto...but Could u redo this tuto with a contrast thread and fabric? Even though you are already explained the instructions, I still don't get it. Thanks.
I’m 38 years old, and a girl, and I used to sew (poorly) for a hobby, and until this day I didn’t know what darning was and that it could be applied to something besides socks. 🤡 Thank you very much!
Huge respect for you Kaara from doing this and teaching us! I just got into zero waste lifestyle and this video is perfect for saving old loved shirts - and with style!
Wow! She's REALLY GOOD AT WHAT SHE DOES! I'm just a country boy who likes to fix everything from heavy equipment to a hole in my shirt so I appreciate these videos! You're good at explaining things without over complicating them! Plus you're CRAZY CUTE so I might have to subscribe just cause of that!?🤪... Haha! Just kidding! But seriously, thank you!!!😊😋
Thanks for posting this tutorial! One of my friends asked me to repair their favorite sweater and I thought it was just a rip, but after looking a little more closely I found that it was actually a very large hole! I really wasn't sure what to do until I found this video.
What a terrific video! I have a beautiful Tye-dyed tank top my sister gave me years ago before she died. I LOVE this shirt for many reasons but I’ve worn it to death and have a huge hole around my belly. Any suggestions how I should repair this? I’ll send you a photo if you would like😃
You can try finding a piece of fabric that matches that texture of the shirt. Make sure it is the color of one of the colors that's on the shirt (don't try to match the same color where it's ripped). You have two options: 1. Make the hole into a heart shape. Get a piece of fabric that matches the texture and cut it into a heart that's slightly larger than the cut-out that's on the shirt. Sew the edges together. (You can try sewing it with alternating colored threads that match the colors of the shirt). Take your time sewing it, a little each day, and make sure the edges are sewn together so they don't fray. Or, 2. Get a piece of fusing fabric and attach a piece of fabric that matches the texture of the shirt. VERY lightly iron the fabric on the unwrapped side of the fabric ( You just want to hit it up enough where it's slightly sticks together. You don't want to bond it yet because then the adhesive on the backing will melt). Then, cut it into a heart, and then remove the paper and fuse the heart to the shirt. From there, you can add a few stitches to keep the edges grin fraying, or you can get colored fabric glue and apply it to the edges (use a thin line first, and you can add more once it's dried, if needed). Keep in ming that step 1 is more difficult, but will produce a softer inside, which may be important to you - because you won't want to wear it if it's irritating. Step 2 is a lot easier and faster, and you can buy a lot of pretty colors that match the shirt. Good luck.
I just tore my shirt at work and it has my hometown on it... Right on time tutoring!!! Saving so I can perform this when I get off work thank you for this video
Thanks for this! My mom ordered a really nice hoodie for my son, and one of her dogs chewed the package & hoodie up before she could bring it inside. There is a big hole in the hood, and she gave it to me for mending, even though I don’t sew garments. 😳🤦🏽♀️ Now I’ll be able to repair it and get it to my son at university in time for cooler weather. ✌🏼💜🛼
WoW Dana G 😆❤️ This is so cool to know that you’ve watched the video with your children! Teaching them the importance of repairing our clothes. You’re an awesome Mom!
Taylour I will certainly make sure to do what you recommend the next time around 💖 Thank you for the feedback, its so dope getting to learn what you think of the tutorial :D!
Thankyou, I bought Marvel compression tshirts a few years ago and suddenly there was a few little holes the next week came and there was a gigantic hole there so I threw it away. Miss it. It was my favourite tshirt a wolverine one. If only I saw this video when I noticed the first hole.
Rebecca, you are awesome! Thank you for sharing your story ❤ ugh I wish too you would have had the tutorial with you! At least now that you've found it you won't have to throw any future shirts with holes out again 😊
Hi Cindy 😃 It took me 2 hours. I've noticed the more I do the technique the faster I work. But a lot depends on the size of the hole, the size will determine the approximate time it will take to mend any type of hole. It's a great technique, I highly recommend it 💖 If you find yourself mending a very big hole lets say more than 5 inches you could patch it and then do this technique on top to reinforce the area, give it this texture and take your time working on it.
Hey rai 😃 Thank you for the suggestion! I plan to show this technique in a darning tutorial for socks and the socks will be light color and I will be using a contrasting thread.
Ok, so it looks like how I’d darn a hole in a sock. Black on black is so hard to see, as others have said, pls do it again with lighter colors. But great job.
I am very new to embroidery and I have a book with the different stitches and I still couldn't make this. It would have been helpful if your thread was a different color than the garment because you can't see what you are doing! I guess I'll just patch my bedspread because I can't keep up with anybody because they go too fast and describe things that you don't know what it is like backstitch for instance, vi knew it was a stitch but I don't know how to do many of the stitches. I'm going to go back to machine sewing!
Hi Carol :D I have made tutorials using the darning technique using a different color thread here's one of them: th-cam.com/video/tN40iOHtI6w/w-d-xo.html If its a large hole, a patch will be better. And for learning the stitches here's a great tutorial explaining them: th-cam.com/video/xvxqtc8thRg/w-d-xo.html
I see your point :) I made one showing this same technique on a sock and made sure to use two contrasting thread so you can see it better. Here's the tutorial: th-cam.com/video/LDEvCpBRHY8/w-d-xo.html
OK I think the technique might be better used on something else. Two hours is a long time for the outcome. It clearly looks like something is wrong with the shirt, not decorative at all. However I enjoyed learning this new stitch and I’m sure I can find a good use for it..Thank you for taking the time to show us

Arin if the hole is not big you wont need the hoop. If its big, then a hoop will be needed. Normally a hoop close $3 or less depending on the size.
