There are so many who are at the best in their field and demand to be treated as such with private jets, security, and a list of demands/riders...and then there is Leland, a truly wonderful human being who treats all with respect, a lesson for us all to share.

I once rode in a similar bus in Europe with a band called Echo and the Bunnymen. 12 bunks, but normal bus seats up front instead of the couches. This was pretty early in their career (1981), so the entire band and crew was on one bus.

    Hi Lee -
It’s very gracious of you to let us peek into a world that few of us will ever know. It really helps the average person understand what a truly nomadic and work-intensive environment it can be. Takes away the “Magical Mystique” and really helps to humanize both you and the seriousness your craft my friend. Well done and thanks for sharing brother. Play on…

Memories of my time in a college circuit band in the 70's. No bus, just travel in back of the truck and sleep in any space you could find. On cold nights after a gig the trick was to snuggle up to a nice warm power amp.

A few words on tour bus travel : I'm sure there are a few viewers out there who have been on some 'bus' tours and will agree. I've done alot of long tours, half on Buses and half being flown exclusively. The general public thinks the touring life is glamorous full of wild nites with drugs booze women. Well all that went out in the late 80s. As tour dates multiplied crews needed good rest. The bus is our sancturary. If doing back to backers (2) or 3-4 gigs in a row we are only getting a few hours of sleep. The Bus Driver is king and deserves respect because he comes with the bus, takes care of it, cleans, maintains mechanical to a certain degree, washes the exterior keeps it looking shiny. A good driver is worth their weight in Gold. They make sure everyone is happy , comfortable and that the bus is well stocked with Ice. Drivers also make sure the bus is always fully stocked with drinks/ food, sometimes even ordering special delivery for us. Every show day Promoter assistants deliver drinks, food, to the bus per what the tour rider calls for. There are for sure some legendary Bus drivers out there ! All that said , I've been on a couple buses with crappy drivers who drove slow and were constantly on and off the gas pedal all nite. Makes for terrible sleep. Where the crew didnt get along at all. Ya just gotta grin and bear it and count the weeks/ days til ya fly home or to the next one.
Most buses are config'ed for 12 bunks, some can be half that. Depends on the tour and what tour management needs and can afford per comfort. You can be all jammed in together on just a couple buses or spread out comfortably with spare bunks for luggage storage etc. Front lounge is spacious with couches, small kitchen, TV, built in coolers, a small dinette table seating . But when you have 12 on a bus things can get a little tight. Hence the back lounge which on Leland's bus is configured a little different than most with that table and rear facing bench seat. Typically its a U shaped couch. Large flat screen tv, maybe a under couch drawer cooler for drinks. The bathroom up front is a half bath, very small. No shower. Sink toilet only. The long standing rule is no pooping on the bus. So we do our duty at the venue before taking off for the next city. Why ? This would fill up the bus's Black water tank quickly and then the driver having to find a dump station whenever is a hassle. There is no time for driving around looking for that. You either go at the occasional fuel stops or wait for arrival at next venue.
Yes, these days there are alot of mixed crews, Male & Female, But Prod managers try to keep the female crew together on one bus. Some dont mind being with 'the boys' . Most of us never had a problem with it.
A word about the bunks : They are semi-comfy yet cozy. if you are a Big n Tall person you may not be able to stretch out fully . We had one crew member who was 6.5 ft tall and he opted to sleep in the back lounge cause he couldn fit in the bunk. It is what it is. With a 12 bunk bus the bunk height is not spacious but adequate. Usually each has a light, small a/c/heat vent , power outlets , sometimes personal mini dvd players. You are usually dead tired so its get in and pass out. My preferred bunk location is passenger side- bottom -front, its closest to the front lounge and toilet and God forbid if the bus rolls on its side you wont be going far out of yer bunk. I've been blessed to not test that theory myself. Some friends were ..well, not so lucky and they have confirmed my theory. You sleep with your feet forward to front of bus . If Driver has to make a fast hard stop your feet and legs take the impact . Sleeping the other way around will snap your neck.
On days off / no show day we will get a hotel room if not doing a long drive. That at least breaks up the Bus monotony and ya get some alone time.
So there ya go, a little more insight into tour bus world. Its not glamorous or exciting. Its a test in patience and compromise. Living /Working with the same people 24/7 can be a pain sometimes but its like being with family in one big house on wheels !

    Thanks for the buss tour.
    Have a nice travel tonight.

    • @westrig180
      @westrig180 ปีที่แล้ว

Most tours at this level and up will be staying in pretty good hotels - not motels. Everyone is paid decently too these days . There's no suffering on a bus . Even the long drives are managable with movies, internet, naps and the occasional fuel stop to stretch yer legs.etc . You find out pretty quick : either get used to it or you are not cut out for this kinda gig.

All the busses pretty much look the same. Some are a little newer than others. Some old friends travel that way to gigs. Six band members, a sound guy, a lighting guy, a driver. Its somewhat like a dorm or frat house. Better than less successful means, but not the lush accommodations people imagine...and the coffins can be cramped.

The dining hall was two compartments over. Most fortunate, the restroom/bathroom facilities was the next compartment over. Ventilation was 24/7, when that went down, that was most noticeable. Just wondering if you have these onboard:
Now we got Country and Western on the bus
    R & B, we got Disco
And eight tracks and cassettes in stereo
And we got rural scenes and magazines
And we got truckers on the C.B.
And we got Richard Pryor on the video

The two hours on stage are but a fraction of the work you do. Thanks for the insight.

Do the roadies travel on a similar bus with the band or do they travel separately with the gear and arrive to the gig earlier? So many questions on logistics of a new venue every night, how do they get it all setup and moved? So many questions! Thanks Lee, I appreciate everything you do.

Crew has their own bus, gear travels in semis.
Crew leaves after the gear is loaded out.
Load in happens way before the band arrives at the venue.
Their are videos on TH-cam of other bands crews during load in and load out.
