Wow, that is a really cool feature with the 2 modes. I didn't need that because I never noticed it was different between the 2 movies, but I'm glad it's there cuz it shows a certain kind of care that was put into this by Mattel. VERY COOL! I'm looking forward to other props they may decide to make. While I worked very hard on my Proton Pack to get it as accurate as I could, I'd gladly buy a licensed one if it wasn't too crazy expensive.
The functions are a pretty accurate reproduction of the actual prop. The light speed is controlled by a potentiometer; you can see Harold Ramis kind of struggle with it in GB2. The real prop has touch switches; as long as you're touching the little metal contacts the arms stay up; when you release the contact they retract back into the shell.
This thing is pretty sweet! I like it. A big part of me wishes Mattel would give The Real Ghostbusters some love as well. The Real Ghostbusters had a really cool PKE meter that had more knobs and switches to mess with and looked more "legit" even though it was just a cartoon. But Mattel did a really good job with the Movie version, so no complaints here. $60 is steep, wish it was $40 or maybe 50 instead. That's my only complaint; cost.
Great review!!! Could you PLEASE tell... possibly even show us what batteries it uses, how many it takes, and where they go? I noticed there's a hole at the bottom of the handle, near the ON switch... is this a port far an adapter, because the batteries are re-chargable?
I just got mine today from eBay(new) for $180. Kinda expensive since it really doesn't do much than what was shown on video. They were selling for $60 from real store and went sold out fast. It's for my 5 yr old son who is addicted to ghostbusters(thanks to me) Had to start buying him everything Ghostbusters so I can have them ready for Christmas
If there is any justice in the world, hopefully Mattel will be making proton packs and traps too! I hope they do because I really don't wanna bust my ass building my own! >.
when i look back when i was 9 years old i had all the 80s toys and now i wish i had not give them away. well i moved to the USA and only could take a small bag with me and had my Ghostbusters and thundercats action toys. i did take the Ghostbuster car and station with me. the very funny thing was also in my bag was knifes hammer and real gun and that was my carry on on the plane. lol yep that was the year 1992. dad sold the Ghostbuster car / station each for $600.00 just orded my PKE prop.
you forgot to tell everyone about the silent mode if you hold the two upper buttons on the pke meter will actually silence the beeping but the lights flashing will continue
Hey, Pixel Dan when are the new Ecto goggles coming out? I am really hoping to get them for Christmas and i was just wondering if they were coming out recently.
all mattel needs to do now is put out a GHOST TRAP like in the movies or even a proton pack with working lights and sounds. i bet they would bank off it
@9fires More like a fancy shoe polisher... hahaha!!! No... really... that was what the original film PKE prop was made from. It's amazing how many film and television props are modified items you see everyday. In shows/films such as: Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters,etc......
the actual original prop had a dial on the front of the unit that when up and down. that way Harald aka Egon could use his thumb to control the beeping and the wings at the same time. he turned the dial upwards to make the beeping faster and the wing rise and the turned the dial down for the opposite effect... i was hoping this prop would use the same technique instead of buttons. was disappointed that they didn't. still a nice prop tho i guess
The functions look awfully complicated. You've got to press two buttons and twist a dial close to simultaneously if you want to simulate a rise in PKE energy. Seems it would be much simpler to have a sliding lever control the wings and the speed of noise/lights, but I guess to make it work like that would make the price point higher.
oo bad mattycollector sold out of them, I REALLY want one, maybe they'll get more in stock, and maybe someday they'll have a wearable proton pack replica with lights and sound effects, hey, a geek can dream lol
Would be better if some paranormal tech guys put a real EMF detector in it and made the beeping and wings react to higher and lower readings within the environment. Then I would buy one. But for $200 and you have to manually do the beeping and wings, that's stupid.
Woooooooow! Thanks man, you just saved me $60, lol. It looks good, but it doesn't make the right sounds. Not even close. If the sound was right it totally would have sold me.
M. Sh. Look up a thing called 'the internet.' That's where you'll be able to 'find' this 7 year old (expensive and very limited at the time) replica toy.
i dont like the waybthe wings' come out, halfway, full, nothing. i'd rather have a full range of motion, seems more true to the film version. just jumping halfway up looks cheesy to me. definitely not dropping 200 bucks on this
One disgruntled, profiteering maker of custom PKE electronic kits couldn't see the 'Like' button through tears of rage, a rage brought on by a predicted loss of an income that he somehow believes he is entitled to.
Funny, I was just about to post the same thing. That and he took nearly ten minutes to show me something he could have shown me in about two. I was thinking about doing some reviews myself and actually act like a normal person, but thought "Nah, I guess people want to see jackasses act like man-boys.". Perhaps I was mistaken.
+Joe B hi. im going to 3d print mine. How exactly do you put the arduino in it? im a newbie in electronics but want to have the satisfaction of doing it my self.'Thanks!
That thing is soo cool you made me realize how cool ghostbusters prop replicas are
Got mine in the post yesterday! love the PKE meter Mattel really have done a amazing job. :-)
Wow 3 years already! Mine still looks brand new 😎

Soooo did you end up making your own or wait 13 years and get the Haslab?

I am really hoping to get them for Christmas and i was just wondering if they were coming out recently.
They should also make the video game version of the P.K.E meter of Ghostbusters: The Video Game too!
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO! Merci pour cette SUPERBE présentation! Ibrahim from Reunion island in the Indian Ocean;-D
great review

Are you gonna get the ecto goggles
most epic ghostbusters prop
@the7percentsolution Maybe the pre-production models lack the correct sounds, if not that definitely hurts my purchase chances.
Would be better if some paranormal tech guys put a real EMF detector in it and made the beeping and wings react to higher and lower readings within the environment. Then I would buy one. But for $200 and you have to manually do the beeping and wings, that's stupid.
I want it! I love collecting replicas.
Is there a way to turn OFF the beep?

Woooooooow! Thanks man, you just saved me $60, lol. It looks good, but it doesn't make the right sounds. Not even close. If the sound was right it totally would have sold me.

They're sadly not being sold by mattel anymore. You can find one on Ebay or Amazon, but at a HUGE price. ~Fennett

that thing cost over $400 lol. you can 3d print one and put an arduino in it for $25.
They where 60 but they dont make them anymore
+Joe B hi. im going to 3d print mine. How exactly do you put the arduino in it? im a newbie in electronics but want to have the satisfaction of doing it my self.'Thanks!
an arduino nano should fit in one and do everything you want it to do.
What about programming?
Programming the arduino is easy. I think you can drive a small servo directly from the pwm pins, add some leds and a speaker and you got a PKE.
@NCC63549 he blew the owner of mattel
