Just upgraded from Ableton 11 suite to the 12 suite. Got into the 12-suite browser, that's when things got confusing. This tutorial by far is what I need to sort out those particular sounds, items, affects, etc., I use. Thank you so much, I can feel my headaches starting to go away. Thanks Seed, keep the tutorials coming.
This is a MASSIVE help. I had no idea about the saved searches feature. This will save me so much time and headache. Thank you kind sir! Amazing tutorial as usual 🙏🏼
I had to test all the plugins I use in my live performances when you mentioned that you choose AUv2 over VST3. I haven't used any AU plugins since moving to M1. I did repeated stress tests to check performance between the two formats. (ie. play 10 Pigments poly patches simultaneously.) In all cases, the difference was repeatable but minimal (1-2%). For those of us who perform live with Live, that extra 1-2% could be the difference between a glitch or a crash and a smooth performance. For Arturia Pigments and Kilohearts plugins, AUv2 was the clear winner. For Melda, Valhalla and Minimal Audio plugins, VST3 won overall, with some Melda plugins performing slightly better in AUv2, but most in VST3. So, based on my very limited testing, I think its pretty developer specific as to whether a plugin is more optimized in AUv2 or VST3 format. You would think AU plugins would run more efficiently without the Steinberg VST wrapper, but supposedly some developers just wrap their VSTs in an AU wrapper. Anyway, great video as always! Auto sample tagging is definitely coming soon, it's only logical.
Can somebody clarify for me? Does Ableton use AU or VST? The website says it doesn't support VST plugins, only AU--- but I keep seeing people saying they're using VST's. Can you clarify?
It would be surprising if the differences vary too much. VST/AU are just a layer or two of function calls between DAW and Plugin. So it should not really matter. If those 1-2% variation is what would push you over the edge to have a glitch then something else is wrong in your live set...
I recently contacted Ableton Support becuase of a session lagging, crashing and just performing terribly. They recommended I only use VST3 plugins when possible, saying they are more stable in Ableton.
Yes some features are neat but I'd still love to have the chance to use the old structure and then invest the time to look into the new browser when I want and not when Ableton wants. It could have been an option: "Use legacy Browser" and then deprecate it a major version or two later.
I haven't installed my Live 12 update yet, but I'm definitely not opposed to these browser changes. I don't know, man. I've learned not to sweat the small stuff with workflow changes. It has helped reduce my stress in endless feature comparisons between DAWs, hardware, instruments, plugins, etc. This video is ridiculously helpful in preparing me for the change. Thanks, as always.
This is definitely the way. You can really tell how this has disturbed some folks’ normal workflow routine. I too was at first glance rather thrown off but then I allowed my mind to wrap itself around the new system and realized how much time it was going to save me in the long run was well worth the time setting it up.

Yup. The beta site has had hundreds of users complaining about it for months. The idea is cool but not implemented very well at all, causing a lot of headache that no one asked for.

Hey, I have a question about the browser in 12.1. Is it me or do my M4L devices not show properly in my "labels"? I want to have all my audio plugins in 1 place, so I made a custom label called "Audio Effects". I tagged all the Ableton effects, plug-ins and M4L devices I often use and click the + button to save my search. All the Ableton effects and 3rd party plug-ins are there, but there are no M4L devices from my user library there. Is it because the user library is not connected to the "search all" function in Ableton or am I missing something here? The same goes for instruments and synths. Thanks in advance!
When I add a bunch of instruments racks on a tag, it actually shows a bunch of duplicates within different plugin groups... Example : Audio Effect Rack as one, Pigments as one. How do I make it so that it shows only Audio Effect Rack but hide all the pigments serum etc etc ?
Great vid as always, really helped me get the info I needed about the explorer! Do you have anything about that Ultimate Drum Generator you teased in the video? Looks dope as F ;)
Thanks for this. Is there a way to save all these changes in the user library and save that on an external drive, so that you can load all these settings / changed automatically across multiple machines, just like we can with the user library? I work on three different machines and the idea of doing this for each machine seems like an unnecessary task. Any thoughts on that?
Great tutorial! I created some saved searches with my own categorisation, but somehow there are totally unrelated plugins in the saved searches. Guessing it is a bug, anyone else having that issue? Example: I have category for drum plugins, added some of faves like Battery 4, Drum rack, created a search for it, all good. Now when I go to the saved search there shows up all the m4l drum synths, plus Max audio instrument, Impulse, Meld and others. I double checked and they do not have my custom tag
Oh, man thank you, this Video is pure Gold!!! I didn't like the new Browser, becouse i have another work Flow. But your Video hase shown me a better way, big ups, thank you :)
Even I was a bit overwhelmed at first. I think the new browser hits the hardest at the Ableton veterans because it changes how we did things dramatically. So long as you take the time to retrain yourself, its A LOT BETTER imo.
I downloaded the live 12 trial. I'm trying to set up my browser, from your video. I don't have the edit button like your showing in the video @ 2min in. Any idea? When I hover over the area nothing shows. FIX -I loaded up a project and it's showing now.
Seed to stage it seems my DAW is in reverse! when I do a hashtag search, it only shows abletons samples. When I do a regular search, my samples show up.
So saving filters is basically what collections have previously offered (the only benefit is that you can have more saved searches than collections) - still don't see a point in this feature.
Adding more Collections has been asked since Live 10, over and over again. It could have been, literally, the easiest thing to do and make people very happy. Give us the option to add, let's say, up to 20 Collections/colors. But nope, those leading the beta testing scoffed at the idea, and of course, it was never implemented. Instead, we got something overly complex that achieves the same thing: a Rube Goldberg implementation of Collections!
I came to find out how to add subtags. I foudn the answer maybe a week ago, made a few tags with sub tags and now I forgot. Its something like Compressor:multiband or something liek that. If anyone knows, please reply.
Yeh; I'd be interested to know this Group > Tag > Sub-tag would be useful...... Though I see nothing in the pre-build menu system to suggest it's possilbe....... Any update from your end, mate?
@@airfixx_8952 Yeah, figured it out like a while back and forgot now that ive already made my subtags. I swear its like TagName:Subtagname, so Dynamics: Transient Processors. Hope this helps.
When I add the certain ableton-live devices (e.g drum rack) to my custom tags a whole lot of other plug-ins are displayed under that tag. Does anyone know if thats a bug oder what i am missing?
Does anyone know anyway to re-organize the saved searches after you’ve made them in the sidebar? When I click on edit, it doesn’t give me the option to drag them around and re-order.
CMD+F has stopped searching all files on my computer when i use it, only shows some. if i manually click to a folder then search for the desired item it’s there, just not when i CMD F. any ideas why?
Maybe you hide the "ALL" folder on the Library, you need to have it selected so the "cmd+F" can use it for your search... that's actually the only folder I have selected.
This is a question re Live 11. Is there a limit to number of folders you can have in Places? Have an exhaustive collection of Ghosthack folders which have been located there. Just recently have had major problems getting Ableton to recognize, accept and provide access to in that location. Any ideas what happened? Will be getting upgrade to 12 Standard. Hope this doesn't continue to happen. Is there somewhere else that these folders are supposed to be placed? This just started to happen mid January. You can access thru Explorer but that is a pain. Liked it before when you clicked on left and you had access in right column. Any thoughts are helpful. Thanks
I have a question about search bar. In my case it does not work properly. When i type "eq" it shows me equalizers even without "eq" in name like TDR Nova, Balancer, but NOT smart eq (from sonible) Any ideas how to solve this?
@@SeedtoStage I already wrote to support of Ableton and sonible and hope they will help :) Anyway very good and informative video from you. I needed it because i have to clean things up in Ab 12 release :)
I have stuck with the proprietary AU plugins because I'm on mac, the downside is if you're trying to collaborate with others who use windows machines, you have to bounce tracks with plugins. I have found au plugins to be stable and crash less but i imagine others have had different experiences. Would love to see a benchmark comparison.
I am following you steps and adding devices *ONLY* in my custom tag, press the + sign and it adds it on the side bar, but it also adds a whole list of .adv files that I never selected and can't take out of the custom list. How do I delete all the .adv samples-nonsense from my list? This browser is doing my head in...EDIT...nevermind, I have to save a preset of a device and then add it. That's not intuitive at all...
Idk what ppl are whining about so hard, if you really hate it and wanna deprive yourself you can still reset most things back to the classic way if you just look a bit into how.. or... U can get past the learning curve and benefit from the new features the way you are invited to. (Altho i dont see myself tagging my samples unless i am on a good amount of adderall). Plenty of objections are addressed in this vid, which good job. The only thing that wasnt so handy from ableton is throwing ppl into the deep end with this.
Great stuff! Especially the save search part!! Does anyone know how to add the .vstpreset or .adg files from the user library to the saved searches? These are always missing :(
Anyone having issues with custom tags becoming grayed out and unclickable? I wanted to change the tag but I can’t remove the custom tags I originally set.
Totally. Everything is slower AND requires more clicks than before when browsing using Push. And tags are not searchable via Push. Seriously. WTF?! 🙄 After all the hype about the ‘new browser’ and it doesn’t actually work with Push. I just don’t understand.
Rumor is that they are working on unlimited collections, because the tagging system isn't boding well with old and new user's. If tech support is being flooded with user's confused with the new browser setup, then i think they will definitely add either more, or infinite collections.
Some really solid tips in here, I did not know about the saved searches! However, the only thing bugging me about this feature is that if you, for example, tag an LFO preset, search for that tag, and save the search; it will not show you only the LFO preset under the saved search. It will group the LFO preset under the LFO device, which the old favorite system did not do. Does anyone know a way around this? Otherwise the tag system is really cool :)
Sadly there is no way to add new plugins to your saved searches. I've got them set up in categories I use the most, If I haven't saved the search with that plugin there, I can't add new ones to the saved searches that sit in the sidebar.
this definitely helps....but i still think this new browser is a mess. after using the beta for over a month before this release, i just don't see the value (and i probably just don't have the patience) to go through the long list of various plugins & 3rd party stuff that i have. i understand the flexibility this may give, but i think there's users like myself that just want things to work without having to fully customize things & this simply doesn't do that.

I actually put off updating to Live 12 for ages, because I would need to do an OSX update to run Live 12, and that in itself would break some of my older compatibility. I *finally* made the upgrade this week, and despite only minimal impact on my VST compatibility, I am regretting the update because the browser sucks. Absolutely mind boggling that the team of very clever people at Ableton collectively thought this was the best solution for browsing - and one that would work best with Push. It simply doesn’t. I kinda think they may have rushed this one out, and will roll out the full upgrade later? I hope.
The worst thing in this browser is about the way it shows the stock plugin preset when swapping, it mixes the plugin’s preset with other devices sometimes! What a hell

Exactly
I do believe its the colon key with no spaces. Try that out, if not, then you might have to do some deep googling like i did but im 100% sure its possible and weird they dont just put it in the manual since it wasnt there last i checked. Hope this helps.
Click Add Tag... and type Tagname|Subtag, so for example in the Sounds group: Bass|Distorted
What's the benefit of saving searches and tags instead of creating groups in the collections section?
The new menu's aren't visible in push 2?
When I add the certain ableton-live devices (e.g drum rack) to my custom tags a whole lot of other plug-ins are displayed under that tag.
Does anyone know if thats a bug oder what i am missing?
Thanks, cheers from Buenos Aires.
This is a great tutorial. I hate the new browser. Let me do things my way….stop forcing me to do it Ableton way😢
Does anyone know anyway to re-organize the saved searches after you’ve made them in the sidebar? When I click on edit, it doesn’t give me the option to drag them around and re-order.
Literally just drag it up/down. Done.
Thanks
This is super helpful
I have a question about search bar. In my case it does not work properly. When i type "eq" it shows me equalizers even without "eq" in name like TDR Nova, Balancer, but NOT smart eq (from sonible) Any ideas how to solve this?
Need more info if you want help. Are you in Ableton 12 beta? Are you using hashtags? Have you tagged plugins?
@@SeedtoStage I already wrote to support of Ableton and sonible and hope they will help :) Anyway very good and informative video from you. I needed it because i have to clean things up in Ab 12 release :)
For apple silicon machines, would you recommend using vst3 or au2? I feel like I’ve consistently had less crashes with vst3 with my m2 pro chip
AU is only for logic, technically.
Rad. Thank you.
Which headphones are you using?
Idk what ppl are whining about so hard, if you really hate it and wanna deprive yourself you can still reset most things back to the classic way if you just look a bit into how.. or... U can get past the learning curve and benefit from the new features the way you are invited to. (Altho i dont see myself tagging my samples unless i am on a good amount of adderall).
Plenty of objections are addressed in this vid, which good job.
The only thing that wasnt so handy from ableton is throwing ppl into the deep end with this.
AU is great for logic, but for live vst seems to be much better option. Especially if You want to use Pigments sequencer for other plugins.
I just tried this and it did not work adding about 300 files that I never clicked. Aif and alc and mp3 and wav and amxd so not working
Priceless… thx!
Fantastic explanation!
the harmonic series tee is rad
So far, all the new browser does is slow me down. After watching this video, I will give it another shot, but I am still pretty skeptic.
Totally. Everything is slower AND requires more clicks than before when browsing using Push.
And tags are not searchable via Push. Seriously. WTF?! 🙄
After all the hype about the ‘new browser’ and it doesn’t actually work with Push. I just don’t understand.
How is saved searches different from what we have with favourites?
Nothing. It's slower to set up, that's for sure.
Rumor is that they are working on unlimited collections, because the tagging system isn't boding well with old and new user's. If tech support is being flooded with user's confused with the new browser setup, then i think they will definitely add either more, or infinite collections.
I like how your mic sounds.
Super usefull!! Thank you!
Otherwise the tag system is really cool :)
noticed this. Have you made a forum post in the beta program about that? Ill back you up!
i actually made the request myself in the beta forum
@@SeedtoStage Nice! I'll head there and upvote it :)
theres no plus button for me to put stuff on the side bar
uh weeee, learned a lot again. thanks!
Sadly there is no way to add new plugins to your saved searches. I've got them set up in categories I use the most, If I haven't saved the search with that plugin there, I can't add new ones to the saved searches that sit in the sidebar.
Will your classes be updated for 12 suite ?
They already are and I'm adding to them weekly
@@SeedtoStage excellent!!!!! Well done sir!
One thing I'm struggling with is which drum kits are acoustic and which ones are electronic
Excellent. Thanks!
Amazing browser! Honestly I don't know if I could ever return to previous Live browser.
yeah me neither
wtf?!
Hugely helpful-thanks!!!!
Thanks for the tips.
this definitely helps....but i still think this new browser is a mess. after using the beta for over a month before this release, i just don't see the value (and i probably just don't have the patience) to go through the long list of various plugins & 3rd party stuff that i have. i understand the flexibility this may give, but i think there's users like myself that just want things to work without having to fully customize things & this simply doesn't do that.
YOU JUST MADE MY TUESDAY TOOOOO AMAZING CMD+F!!!!!
Dude, I’m totally gonna get signed up with your course! I was going to last Black Friday,-I’ve been kind of waiting for Ableton 12 - and I’ve been releasing a bunch of new music on spotty… Same name… I just been busy, but I’m totally gonna take all of your courses. Dude, you are the man!
Came from Logic and this browser is dreamy compared to what I’m used to
I actually put off updating to Live 12 for ages, because I would need to do an OSX update to run Live 12, and that in itself would break some of my older compatibility.
I hope.
16:48 Algonaut Atlas 🙃
Wow, it is like magic. Clap - bam 😮
The worst thing in this browser is about the way it shows the stock plugin preset when swapping, it mixes the plugin’s preset with other devices sometimes! What a hell
