I bought this bike based on this review. I received a bike that would not go as fast as tail Happy said that it would. Also, the bike had a pronounced clunk coming from the motor, confirmed by a local bike shop, to Fission. Fission Bikes did not offer to replace the bike or the clunking motor, and refused to pay return shipping. Beware of Fission Bikes and this bike.
Every bike I have seen him review so far has looked like dodgy Chinese rubbish. Unbranded batteries, non-existent customer service, dangerous etc. They either have no Trustpilot reviews at all or lots of bad ones, bad reviews on Reddit, bad reviews being deleted on Amazon etc. Ofc he is going to say it's the best stuff in the world. He got it for free and has only used it for a couple days. Even rubbish lasts a test run or two. I have had my ebike for nearly 10 years, done over 5k miles and I am still using the same battery! Feel like I won the lottery tbh.
@@SchoolforHackers It IS a Chinese bike but there are good and bad Chinese products imo. This is where people get it wrong by labelling everything Chinese as bad. You usually get what you pay for BUT I still do feel like I won the lottery mainly due to the unbranded batteries on this particular bike. It has 'Westhill Terrain' written on the side which is a UK company who slaps their brand name on bikes bought from China. The actual brand is Apollo and the bike is a Mars M2. I can only find the Mars M3 currently. I bought one each for me and my girlfriend and even though the bikes are amazing and have done nearly 15 thousand miles combined. I really do not advise anyone to buy bikes with unbranded lithium batteries. We were just very lucky imo.
@@SchoolforHackers If you are in the UK I would check out Merkybikes. I have just bought 2 X9 bikes that used to be sold for £2,850. They are on sale atm for 1.5K each and I managed to get a deal on 2 for 2.2K! I really hope they are good because they look amazing. Come ooooon China!
"this ebike is excellent for towing heavy weight and hill climbing situations", exactly the type of e-bike I'm looking for! Thank you for the review, especially with the trailer, the added weights and your usual hill climbing test at the beginning.
There are smaller chain rings and adapters for the 620 if you need more low-end as well as shorter crank arms for short legs or avoiding pedal strikes on serious off-road rides.
Seems like its own category of ebike. Better than other "hunting" ebikes I've seen. I think dual hub motors would suit such a bike better, especially with that trailer hitch position. Would have liked so see braking tests with 190lbs on trailer.
Wow just WoW! thanks for the review! a pretty awesome [ultra] Ebike its showing "not available" at the moment. . . Id prolly not want to spend that much now anyway - lol But will be watching for it.
I have a Biktrix with this motor, but I have a Sram 11x1 driveset. I can tell you are used to hub drive motors. With this motor, you really have to use the gears, like driving a motorcycle. If you want natural pedal assist feel, but still want big torque, the Bafang Ultra is the way to go. Just make sure you run a high quality chain and check it for stretch, because that motor will wear out chains.
Although irrelevant for an e-bike review/test (for us city folk anyway), I enjoyed that sand berm test at 21:47. Agree, I don't think any bike would make it up that berm, unless the bike has a track drive (think snowmobile or M1 Abrams ).
If you get a chance, the hellbender max is even better...it WILL climb what u have thrown at this model if you have traction...its incredible. Fun review!
Just an fyi for these powerful mid-drives. On throttle you can often get higher top speeds by choosing a lower gear. This motor will spin at 160+ rpm. Much faster than you can pedal. But top speed is limited on these by power. Mine will hit 4km/h faster on gear 7 than gear 8
How much difference does cassette derailer gearing & free rolling makes, in combination? If right gear+power combo is used on regular commute. Does it increase range?
Would be very helpful if you would include a review section on all bikes, of the control panel, what settings are necessary to ride the bike, to get max. speed, and what settings and functons are available at the control panel, and which are not. Was this review of the 750 or 1000W bike?? Tires look like the 4.7" tire on the more expensive bike.
@@Anderson_999same setup on my Frey ex pro dual battery. I can get 38mph when the batteries are topped off and gear 7 gives 2mph extra over gear 8 for some reason. Also helps that it’s not a fat tire bike so not too much resistance
I have the Keteles K800 Pro, a dual motor 23ah 2000 watt 48v for $1300 shipped. Because both wheels drive it goes up any hill, goes 35 mph and seems to be such a better buy than this bike. I can't seem to justify spending 3 to 4 times the money for a bikes that really do not offer much more performance.

Thanks, I enjoy your reviews and am pleased you are starting to review higher end bikes.
I know the mid Bosch motor on my bike auto releases drive for a split second to allow smooth changes , no crunching etc , I wonder if this does the same , or as you say ripped up chains and cassettes , I home it has an extra strong chain to cope with the torque 😁
It’s not that the motor is just strong it’s that going through the gears also affects its use ability unlike a hub motor. I installed one on my Canondale lefty and it jigs great.
As usual, another entertaining and informative review by Matt. (Indeed, I have four e-bikes and don't need another; but I like watching THTV's reviews to stay up on what's what, and being entertained watching the happenings in Santa Monica, where my ex-GF lives.) Regarding this bike, it seems a tad much for what it is, but I duly note you get what you pay for (e.g., that Bafang; quality brakes, frame, and full suspension). Interesting they don't include front and rear lights. The website shows the front light listed for $40. Assuming it cost them $20 wholesale, why not just include it on their $4,000 bike. Not sure what's going on there.
By comparison a 300cc Honda motorcycle has a torque figure of only 27Nm. But I got the feeling you were having massive fun this day. For someone who has a small business this rig with the trailer will cover a lot of tasks.

Perhaps he misspoke, but riding at nearly full throttle “all day” is a little misleading. If you’re pulling 1500 watts continuously from a 960 watt hour battery, you’ll get about 40 minutes from full charge to dead. Realistically more like 30 minutes before range anxiety kicks in.
