If Gajeel vs Natsu was the only fight, then there would be an argument for anybody causing a fire that wasn't there at the start was actually assisting in the 1v1...but being a guild vs guild fight with 1v1 fights everywhere negates the point of assistance. What happens if Natsu challenges Gajeel in an area with no steel or iron? Gajeel gets bodied by Natsu in that case...so the ultimate point stands, Natsu wins against Gajeel at this point in the story.

I wouldn't say one person is stronger than the other like its that simple, its more like one's magic just counters the other better, maybe Natsu could have gotten a power up during that might and somehow beat him but he would have struggled cuz his magic wasn't necessarily stronger than his his but it could've been from a power up, but Erza's magic countered his magic, by just cutting through his air, she didn't really have to struggle to beat him cuz her magic not necessarily better than his or stronger( which probably is) it just completely counters it

Not really a stalemate, one was resting the whole time and surrounded by what he needs to replenish his magic, the other fought 2 people before this and was low on magic took a beating and still won
