Honda CB350 RS | First ride review | PowerDrift

  • Honda moved fast to release the second variant based on the same, brand-new platform as the CB350 Highness with the new RS. The CB350 RS features the same 350cc single as the Highness with torque peaking at just 3,000RPM and 21.07PS of peak power. This is a smooth, torquey engine that is geared a little too tall for highway riding. The frame and suspension are the same as the Highness and the changes are to the design and to the ergonomics. How is the RS to ride? Can you tour on it with the more sporty sitting position? Shumi has the answers.

Neither, waiting for CB500X. Just hoping Honda price it sensibly. The performance of the highness is a downer esp in 5th gear n seems like Honda has taken the CB moniker too seriously. I mean a city bike (CB) should be fun on the highways too... Even the old CBR 250 was faster than this. C'Mon HMSI, give us some good motorcycles - the market has matured a lot now.

I keep seeing everyone saying that this bike is "Slow at highway speeds"
I personally ride an R3 and my riding partner lately is someone who rides a H'ness.
Most of the time when he leads, it feels like the bike is plenty fast and I have to ride harder to catch up.
And when I lead, the H'ness hardly has any trouble keeping pace at a gentle 110 average.
Hence, don't go by what others feel is a slower highway speed. If it can do 100-110 without vibes, that's all you need for our roads.

True, I own Duke390 and bought Hness as my second bike, initially felt I wouldn't be able to do long distance as I am used to cruising at 110-130 on my duke.
After 3k kms and few long rides, I am very happy with H'ness can cruise at true 110-115 kmph all day.
Yes, the tall 5th gearing is little annoying first, but once you are used to the bike and understand the engine character you will be fine, also engine is extremely refined at any rpm.
Coming from duke, the ergonomics are very relaxed and can do 600+kms in day with very little fatigue.

You're wrong on two counts. Firstly, you dont shift into the 5th very early, in fact you CAN'T shift into the 5th below 70, without the engine crying out in protest...the gearing is so tall. Secondly, as you put it, its not as simple as opening and closing the throttle once in 5th, on the contrary, nothing happens if you open the throttle at 70 with the bike in 5th....for any overtaking manoeuver, you gotta shift down, down to 3rd even, at times....and that is where the action is! I've had this bike for the last couple weeks, done about a thousand kms, I already have a Classic 500, chose a Honda this time as I've had enough of broken clutch cables, failed starters, losuy lights (you put aux lights and you're screwed by the 14 AH battery that costs a bomb), and a screwed fuel injector. While the Honda may not give me the torque to cruise in top gear at 40-50....it gives me something intangible but of paramount importance on a long ride....PEACE OF MIND and RELIABILITY.

Motorcycling is, along with mechanics, an art; like say literature. And so it encompasses such a beautiful legacy, each brand featuring the culture/history of the land of its genesis. In the intricate wiring of a Honda bike perhaps you can feel the post world war desperation of Japan (?). Might seem futile but I genuinely appreciate the fact that you choose to be theoretical. I rode this bike and have to agree with shumi on the easy going nature , This bike can comfortably cruise between 80 -120 on highways without any distinct vibrations. If you dont like the waiting period on RE's or you dont want an RE as it is way too common, definitely choosing this bike is a good idea.
The only negative thing is the headlight throw , though led it is still not adequate, the halogen on my classic does a better job.

  • @RealAutoReviews
    @RealAutoReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

You're incorrect, on two counts, Shumi:
    1) 1:00-1:30:
You say: "The way they've chosen gearing causes problems. So the pro of this engine is at really low speeds..... you will shift up into 5th very very early on and then it's just peaceful riding, opening and closing the throttle."
FACT: NO, sir. In the city, you can't shift into 5th "very very early on" and you definitely can't stay there in "peace, and just open and close throttle." In fact, you can't shift into 5th anytime before 60 km/h (it's 40 km/h for the Meteor), and even when you do, you can't do that "peaceful on/off throttle" you talked about 🤦 In the city, in 5th, every time you close the throttle, you WILL have to shift down to fourth to keep the engine from lugging.
    2) 6:53-7:03:
You say: "If the rear wheel was narrower, and the circumference lower, you'd get a motorcycle geared EVEN LOWER than the H'Ness and that would really really definitely be a problem."
FACT: The gearing on the H'Ness is TALL, not SHORT. So the statement "gearing even shorter than the H'Ness would have caused problems" is incorrect.
Would request you to read a bit about gearing, engines, and stuff before you make videos 🙏

Dear Shumi, I rode my Meteor down to Kankyakumari (3300 KMs) in a week and I can tell you this machine with this new engine is a gem. There are few negatives but they are so tiny no one will mind them, I think with this engine in classic frame RE will out run Honda by miles. Because on a highway getting your peak torque and power on a such a low RPM simply does not work, with J series motor, you can actually overtake a truck at 80 KMPH without a down sift, you can climb a hill at 70 KMPH, can cruise 90 to 100 for hours and many more things. I think RE played it very smart with tuning and gear positioning. But thanks to Honda, it has a big role in forcing RE to make a better machine. But at present RE is the boss of 350 CC.

The bike is at good control and I reached a max of 120 speed and the bike is so smooth. A few setbacks like, the head light throw in the night is not sufficient. • @dhruvadj

Bang on Shumi Da. Exactly what I even wanted to say, that Honda should have stuck to being a Honda rather than being a better RE there is! When I ask my friend who owns a H'ness ( 4 months old now) that it must be awesome to ride that bike his reactions are mostly neutral and self introspective . I mean if I break down his thought process into words it would summarise like "Meh, I just own a refined RE rather than owning a RE. I just wanted to be on a different bandwagon of cruiser bikes which more or less look exactly the same "
And I guess Shumi da, that's what the bane of the current bike market is in currently at the least, wont you say. Manufacturers are more or less making the same versions of already established models, sort of piggybacking I would say. CB300R was a good model, but Honda completely deviated from that. And this is just one example, there are many many more like that in the current scenario. Everyone just wants to cash in on the same product portfolio. Bit of a long rant here but wanted to say what I was feeling inside my cerebrum 😛

Shumi all said and done the Honda H'nes and RS are way better than the RE Meteor and Hunter in reliability, engine refinement, fit and finish and quality including components used and cost of ownership. RE sell cheap bikes and to do that there is a trade off. After three RE's I can tell you that I'd rather be shifting gears on the road than spending hours and days at the RE Service Center waiting for my bike to be fixed. My latest bike was purchased at Rs 2 Lacs . I've spent over Rs 2 lacs on maintenance! Rust issues, fuel pump failure, bent connecting rod, rear brake master cylinder failure not once twice, faulty wiring harness changed twice, faulty locks, water seeping into the petrol tank due to poor design, poor paint job, leaky front forks, oil leakages around the engine, faulty console (Speedometer & RPM meters) changed twice before 60,000 kms - the list goes on and on. With Honda you get peace of mind, bullet proof reliability and customer care service that is second to none. RE need to cut their PR (propaganda) budget and invest in product design, quality control and change their attitude of the staff from top to bottom. Things are gradually changing from a sellers market to a buyers market and RE need to stop taking their customers for granted.

Finally Honda has shown some respect for Indian customers by launching something that has decent power and not overpriced. If they had had their way, they would have sold it at a price not less than Rs.4 lakhs. Competition is heating up; that's good.
