He's VERY lucky he hit in the right spot, since he hit with the flat part of his shin. That's what broke Silva's leg against Weidman when Weidman checked. Bas Rutten had the best explanation for it, comparing the flat/sharp parts of the shinbone to a non-metal ruler. Structurally, the flat part is much weaker to bending/hitting something.
Whats crazy is, he was perfectly positioned to defend that kick. Usually, kicker would fracture his tibia like Weidman, Conor or Silva. MVP must have dense leg bones.
@RT that's a misconception. They have a higher rate of bone density as a group compared to other groups of humans, but Eastern Asians and Europeans have denser bone thanks to Neanderthal ancestry. They just don't have as many people with abnormal bone density in the whole group.
The second I saw this injury when watching the highlights, went straight to your channel for the possible explanation.........and of course as always you didn't fail. You're crazy with the quickness!! Thanks
This channel is awesome. I found it on a Sat. and binge-watched every video. I've always been interested in the fine details of athletes' injuries. I saw one of the worst injuries in the history of the NBA up-close. My girlfriend and I were at the Clippers game, in 2007, when Shaun Livingston obliterated his knee. Our seats were only a few rows up behind the basket where Livingston mangled his knee. I'll never forget the images of his severely twisted knee and, even worse, I'll never forget how loud he was screaming. Livingston must have been in a ton of pain but I think some of his screaming was because he knew his NBA career would never be the same. Sadly, he was right but, miraculously, he did get another chance to play in the NBA and he even won a championship.
MVP’s leg and knee strikes are dangerous weapons. This guy broke Cyborg’s skull and almost killed him and now he’s snapping people’s leg bones. There are some people in this world that you just don’t mess with. MVP looks skinny but the guy is an extremely dangerous martial artist!!!
I tore my right ACL just over 3 years ago. Watching any knee video you do gives me phantom pains in my right knee. But hey, I made it to the 3 minute 19 second mark before throwing in the towel lol
Keep them coming👏👏👏 So many opportunities to learn about our bodies! Most of us aren't professional athletes, but we roll ankles, twist knees, arms, etc.... 🍺🍺🍺
@bornana gaming douglas lima was considered the best 170lb fighter in the world the first time they fought , he did get kod tho and that was all based on douglas' destruction of a shot rory macdonald
Sheeesh…MVP is just different man. There are elite strikers where the biggest concern going against them is getting KO’d. But one must also reconcile w/ the likelihood of being maimed when facing MVP. That guy really hurts dudes in there.
Brian, I just saw Edwin Diaz’s knee injury in the World Baseball Classic. Do you think that he ruptured his patellar tendon in his right knee? Hope you drop a video on it soon, and hope you are well! 🩻🙏🏻
Very unlikely that the patela snapped in 2 pieces, more likely that it chatered a distal portion of it and even more likely that the infrapatela tendon ruptured grade 3 since it was in high tension and the full patela pulled up. Nasty either way...
MVP might have one of the most durable bones for an MMA fighter. He cracked another fighter's skull some years ago with a flying knee that hit right on the noggin and that effectively ended the fight.
MVP is something else. He doesnt give a fuck where his kick lands. OG right there. His leg stayed unphased. Brutal kick. This is now a thigh cap ppl... MVPs kicks are mortal. Watch the video "who really won?" between Lima and MVP, Lima felt those kicks man.
I know this isn't an MMA channel but any discussion seeking to assess the impact of leg kicks is remiss not to consider the most important variable: "Kick checking". Was this defensive contermeasure employed at the time of impact? Was it executed correctly? If not, would it have helped? How & why does the leg check work? I feel like your audience would really appreciate your insights on these questions. Maybe next time 👍.
Not him but I've seen people explain checking and have a bit of a medical background, the goal with checking a leg kick is to have the kick land close to your tibial plateau which is the thickest and strongest part of the tibia. This was a little too high to be a proper check which caused a lot of what made this go so wrong
From what the broadcast said, he tried to check it, but it was so fast and MVP leg and foot seemed to hit it at just the right angle for MVP sake and wrong angle for the opponent.
@Aj_533 Yeah nah those weren't actually questions I was asking for myself. Was just suggesting examples of the sort of thing that his viewers (who may not be as fight educated) would benefit from. Thanks though. What u said is, of course, correct.
@Ubahfly iirc he's brought up the effectiveness of leg checking before and beyond that you're getting into technical MMA content more than medical which isn't the focus of his channel even tho he's clearly a big enough MMA fan to probably know a thing or two
That's sad, he's a Brazilian, son of japanese As a Brazilian and fan of tradicional martial arts it's very sad, I think he was ready for this challenge and I hope to see a rematch where everything goes well
How can you repair a knee cap like that though? Like you mentioned there's two opposing tendons pulling at it, what would surgery be able to do to attach the knee cap together?
Looks like a patellar fracture dislocation/avulsion fracture. I suspect that the distal fragment is still attached to patellar tendon which is still connected to the tibial tuberosity and the larger fragment is still attached to the quadriceps. Immediately after the kick when Yamauchi plants his leg and the quadriceps contract to attempt to extend the knee, we can see the quadriceps bulge proximally with the fractured component of the patella moving superiorly up the thigh. You can see the fragment resting at the distal aspect of the right thigh when Yamauchi is on his back. As you’ve pointed out, you can clearly see the right femoral condyles when the knee is flexed. I suspect an ORIF of the patella will be required.
Kneecap dislocations heal well? Maybe initially but then they re dislocate. Mine popped out 6 times over 15 years before I finally had surgery to replace my mpfl
I am going to preface my thoughts about this life changing injury by saying; I know this is a dangerous sport and injuries happen! but now, this man's ability to earn and income in his chose profession has just been destroyed, because of an avoidable life changing injury by a careless Un-sportsmen attack, and everyone seems to be impressed. F'n outrageous. Every person who injures someone to the degree they can no longer support themselves, because of someone's carelessness, should be able to sue the FcK, out of that person for every single penny they earned. This is supposed to F'n sport, not life or death!
Only the good doctor, who's seen this and much worse on a regular basis, can appropriately get away with referring to such a hideous looking injury as a "bump and contour..." Lol.
Hey Brian are you going to do a reaction video for New York Mets and Puerto Rico Pitcher Edwin Diaz He sustained an injury concluding the game against the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classics. Thank you
How would one go abut repairing this if it is a broken kneecap? put in pins and screw the pieces together (assuming there is one piece attached to the patellar tendon and one piece to the quad tendons)?
That was an illegal move and Page should've been disqualified. It could've been worse, he could've kicked straight at the base of the knee and broke it completely. Really, he should've been given the L and DQ'd
I hope MVP gets his leg checked out too that looked so close to snapping his own leg Anderson Silva style 😬 his leg looks like it bends round Yamauchi's knee
The fact that MVP didn’t break his own leg amazed me. Hope a Speedy recovery to Yamauchi!
It just hit right spot to break Goiti's knee, BUT it could've hit the wrong spot and broke Page's leg.
Remember "cyborg" forehead!!!
There is no recovery from that, this man's career is OVER!
Imagine if he had also broken his own leg. Draw due to double injury. These leg kicks are no joke man.
That's wild. It's always crazy to see an injury I've never seen before in sports.
And it's always inflicted by mvp
That's impressive busting someone's kneecap from the back portion.
Especially with how narrow his base was while off balance because he landed on the other guys foot
Whats crazy is, he was perfectly positioned to defend that kick. Usually, kicker would fracture his tibia like Weidman, Conor or Silva. MVP must have dense leg bones.
Interesting fact: People of african descent actually do have slightly denser bones.
@RT that's a misconception. They have a higher rate of bone density as a group compared to other groups of humans, but Eastern Asians and Europeans have denser bone thanks to Neanderthal ancestry. They just don't have as many people with abnormal bone density in the whole group.
Yes, MVP and Bones - Great MMA Fighter
Damn. Doc was having an evening of fun and enjoying himself and still comes out with a video !
Those are some really red ears.
@Bob Lawblaw Haha looks like he was out in the cold
@Kyler he rushed home in the cold to make this!
MVP delivered a mortal combat bone breaker
He's insane
Lol, Mike Perry.
@CoolBreeze37 perry split Michael's lip in two lol
The second I saw this injury when watching the highlights, went straight to your channel for the possible explanation.........and of course as always you didn't fail. You're crazy with the quickness!! Thanks

Nobody does it like Doctor Sutterer, my mans comes out with a video asap every time, never misses
MVP has a knack for causing freaky serious injuries to his opponents. NOT saying he's a dirty fighter, actually saying he's fooking good
Happy to see this video, despite the injury itself. Having shattered my patella 5 months ago, I’m glad to hear your take on an injury similar.
UPDATE: Goiti’s manager said that preliminary X-rays indicate a patella tendon rupture. Average recovery time for that is 6 months - 1 year
Thanks!
That is brutal dude
MVP’s leg and knee strikes are dangerous weapons. This guy broke Cyborg’s skull and almost killed him and now he’s snapping people’s leg bones.
There are some people in this world that you just don’t mess with. MVP looks skinny but the guy is an extremely dangerous martial artist!!!
2:47 Seeing it from that side angle, im suprised Page's shin bone didn't snap as well😬
There was some wild torsion happening there.
My man must have put in some serious conditioning hours on those shins.
For real, his shin bone was bending… something had to break. It’s almost weird that it was the other guy’s kneecap
Man this was quick! thanks for the break down - that was a gnarly injury....
Love your content! Wondering what your thoughts were on Bennedict Mathurin's injury
I tore my right ACL just over 3 years ago.
Watching any knee video you do gives me phantom pains in my right knee.
But hey, I made it to the 3 minute 19 second mark before throwing in the towel lol
Thats trauma. The body keeps the score. Im same way with spine videos after i hurt my spine.
ACL tear isnt that bad 😂
@Woah Black BettyI've torn mind twice. Yeah, second wasn't so bad. First was the most painful injury I've ever experienced
@Woah Black Bettyplus, the surgery recovery feels awful
Keep them coming👏👏👏
So many opportunities to learn about our bodies! Most of us aren't professional athletes, but we roll ankles, twist knees, arms, etc....
🍺🍺🍺
same mvp that fractured an opponent’s skull once
devastating striker
hes so good he turns strikers into wrestlers
Never fought elite opponents tho
@BPJactually he is so bad on the ground that this is the obvious way to beat him
@bornana gaming douglas lima was considered the best 170lb fighter in the world the first time they fought , he did get kod tho and that was all based on douglas' destruction of a shot rory macdonald
@bornana gaming I'd love to see u fight Mike perry lol
Sheeesh…MVP is just different man. There are elite strikers where the biggest concern going against them is getting KO’d. But one must also reconcile w/ the likelihood of being maimed when facing MVP. That guy really hurts dudes in there.
Didnt expect witness something like this at my 1st MMA event, best of wishes to him
That was one replay I could have done without. Damn, that was nasty!
Holy shit....that second view you can see how much Michael's leg bends as he hit the knee.... that's fucking wild
You’d think a shin vs a knee cap would end in a broken shin. Crazy injury
Brian, I just saw Edwin Diaz’s knee injury in the World Baseball Classic. Do you think that he ruptured his patellar tendon in his right knee? Hope you drop a video on it soon, and hope you are well! 🩻🙏🏻
Your videos are so awsome and very helpful. I appreciate your hard work and knowledge
As soon as I saw this result on Reddit I came straight here for the breakdown. Really enjoy your work
You know your good at fighting when you can kick a hole into someone's knee
Doc, you should break down MVP's fight where he caved in Cyborg Santos' head. The x-ray was brutal.
MVP breaks bones for a living.
Can you do one explaining the how & what of Edwin Diaz’s injury?
This man’s shinbone/ankle is made of steel. How did that not hurt. 😟
Honestly, the Stars just aligned perfectly for him
MVP is the obky guy to visibly crack a skull while competing. Now add a knee cracked to that list. Sheesh.
He broke a nose too. Derek Anderson
Can you do Andrei Svechnikov tearing his ACL? He came back and played the 3rd period. Like how is that possible.
Brian you a hardcore sports fan for watching Bellator! Lmao
I’ll be honest I wasn’t watching this one live :/
@Brian Sutterer MD Appreciate another great video
@Brian Sutterer MD what about one championship and pfl mma
Bellator is great. So glad these other major promotions are getting bigger. Ufc dirty.
Bellators great, what are you on
Damn that injury was nasty🤢
Pateller tendon rupture was last I read in the update of the injury. Nailed it Doc
I see he has been humbled after his 2 losses. No more disrespecting his opponents
The knee cap was definitely broken in half I wonder how long it will take to heal?
You are the best! Mad respect, Doc!
As soon as I saw this I was waiting for this video! You inspired me to pursue sports medicine!
I was waiting for this when I saw the kick I love that you cover the sport

As a Brazilian and fan of tradicional martial arts it's very sad, I think he was ready for this challenge and I hope to see a rematch where everything goes well
Oddly enough you block a kick with the knee as well. It's about how you use it.
Nice breakdown. Underrated beat doc!
I was hoping you'd cover this. Thank you so much
Damn now these guys have to be careful trying to check calf kicks.
I don’t know if you follow the World Baseball Classic, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on Edwin Diaz’ knee injury
Scary, this could end his career.
Thank you doc! Was waiting for your vid after seeing it happen 😅
MVP kept breaking bones in stunning fashion, but he never UFC calibre.
Hey can you please do a video break down on Edwin Diaz and his injury!
How can you repair a knee cap like that though? Like you mentioned there's two opposing tendons pulling at it, what would surgery be able to do to attach the knee cap together?
Ortho bros work wonders
I think it's a wrap. Hes gonna have a permanent limp like when soldiers are wounded and it hits the danger spots that they have a permanent limp
Please cover Andre Blake’s injury for the Philadelphia Union
Doc needs to do a breakdown of his own inflamed ear
great and timely explanation..tyvm
Can you break down the Robert Williams injury from early March??
As soon as I saw the injury I knew Brian would have a breakdown video of this
GOT DAMN! BRUTAL!

His "opponent" dont have a name???... C'mon doctor!!!!
S/o Goiti Yamauchi
The Doc is tha man!

I wish I could understand your language because your channel has a special content and offers great things and science
Only the good doctor, who's seen this and much worse on a regular basis, can appropriately get away with referring to such a hideous looking injury as a "bump and contour..." Lol.
Could’ve easily have been MVP snapping his own leg in half considering how skinny his legs are
What does skinny legs have to do with bones? I don't understand you people.
Isn't the kneecap the (or one of the) hardest bones in the body?
MVP's shin must be made of steel
Hey Brian are you going to do a reaction video for New York Mets and Puerto Rico Pitcher Edwin Diaz He sustained an injury concluding the game against the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classics.
Thank you
That was fast, Doc!
How did the other guys shun take that blow. Silva broke his leg, getting broke in half in a check from Wideman.
How would one go abut repairing this if it is a broken kneecap? put in pins and screw the pieces together (assuming there is one piece attached to the patellar tendon and one piece to the quad tendons)?
It also looks like MVP was very close to breaking his leg lol
yup.....hes in a lot of pain now too😛😛😛😛🐤💨💨💨💨💨warriors😜😂☝
Ow ow ow ow…dang, that looks incredibly painful. Owwww
You should make a video explaining Hasbulas condition
now my knee hurts
Please do one video explaining de Edwin Diaz (baseball) of the NY Mets injury in de World Baseball Classic
That was an illegal move and Page should've been disqualified. It could've been worse, he could've kicked straight at the base of the knee and broke it completely. Really, he should've been given the L and DQ'd
That’s CRAZY!!
I hope MVP gets his leg checked out too that looked so close to snapping his own leg Anderson Silva style 😬 his leg looks like it bends round Yamauchi's knee
What a strange injury
Shoutout to the Tibial Tuberosity. My favorite body part.
MVP's skeletal structure is clearly made out of vibranium.
Just read it was a patella tendon rupture, ouch
MVP's second showing in the channel...
Can u talk about Kevin Huerter's Hamstring injury?
I remember silva leg breaking when he kicked
Did you have a little red wine before this one Doc ? Lol
Great video as always
He also crushed someones forehead with his knee. What is this dudes legs made of??
Lesson: Snort pure calcium BEFORE fighting MVP.
Calling the lab leak a thwory is like callin' Fauci a Professional DOCTOR
Mans has fractured a skull with a knee and kneecap with his foot. Jesus
Dude has some serious power in every single strike and kick he levies on his opponents...it's crazy.
Bro. You’re fast as hell wtf
