Thanks! Easiest companion planting video to figure out. Normally you get a list with a few hundred plants and what they each likes or not. I can do plant families. I start many plants indoors based on families. No brassicas with this, not night shades with that SUPER EASY! Perfect timing finding this video, since it's almost warm enough in Northern Minnesota to start moving babies outside.
Hi, I found your video helpful and I appreciate that you don't waste time with a long intro and get straight to the point! Thank you! That being said, although it is nice to know what not to plant where. It would be even more helpful to know, 'WHY' certain herbs and veggies should not be planted next to one another. There are so many videos and articles online, many of which contradict each other. This makes the learning process highly confusing, especially for beginner organic gardeners like me. If you could please explain "WHY" it would really help me, and I am sure many others, figure it out for ourselves, especially when coming across conflicting information. Thanks so much! WHY Caps are for polite emphasis not screaming : )
Thank you. I mentioned in the video that generally certain plants cannot be planted next to one another because they share the need for the same soil nutrients. The stronger plant will rob those nutrients from the other. Beyond that, it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to list or talk about the “why” for every plant combination that could exist.
I hear you! It is so confusing, especially for beginner organic gardeners like me. Also, it would be nice if someone explained WHY? then perhaps we could figure it out for ourselves.
Hi i have been planting my Onions with my Carrots with no problems at all. The Carrot Fly doesn't like the smell of Onions or Garlic for that matter, and the Onion Fly doesn't like the smell of Carrots, so are handy next to each other. Stay Safe, Barry (ENG)
Unfortunately his info is not reliable. 2:25 he says don’t plant carrots with onions. Google says: Carrots - Plant with beans, Brassicas, chives, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, pole beans, radish, rosemary, sage, and tomatoes. And it’s a common practice to plant carrots with onions because it deters the carrot flys. He means well but he needs to know what he’s talking about so others don’t get misled
So when they say these don't go together, is it because they use the same nutrients from the soil? or they will counter each other's pollination? I've heard both.
I'm thinking of buying a house plant such as a Kentia Palm. Can I add a herb, like Mint to the same plant pot? I like the idea of adding some foliage and interest to the soil and also an aroma to the room. Is this a good idea? Would it be beneficial to either plant or is it pure madness and potentially harmful to the palm?
@@CountryLivingExperience thanks for the quick reply! I'll give it a go and see what happens. Here's hoping I don't kill off a £75 palm in record time.

Kindly guide on this
Thankyou for you video. I am a slightly confused though when it comes to carrots, I have read and been told that alliums are the perfect growing companion for carrots as they help discourage carrot root fly. Can you please explain why they are not suitable together.
You're welcome. Carrots and onions aren't good next to each other because of competition for similar nutrients. The onions do help keep carrot white flies away though. Tradeoffs.
@@CountryLivingExperience Thankyou for taking the time to reply. Maybe just some very fragrant herbs would be better then and I will put the onions else where 😉
It depends. Some charts are old wives tales. Some are based on science. If someone planted beans and peppers together and had a bad year, it could have been passed down as a fact through the generation. Also, someone else may have a different microclimate than you. It may not work for them but great for you. Your soil may be more nutrient dense and can support two heavy feeders, etc. If it works for you, do it. If it stops working, don't 😂
Potatoes and carrots don't mix ( they attract the same diseases and pests), I plant lettuce and onions in the pace between tomato and squash plants. The lettuce and onion actually in a few weeks before the tomato and squash plants- and they're done quicker so you harvest them and teh tomato and squash keep growing. Andone with dogs running around and kids playing in the dirt earns a like.
Hi Lynda. They do well together. A pumpkin is a squash so it aligns with the Native American 3 Sisters idea of corn, beans, and squash. Tell your grandson it will be ok....lol.
Hey it’s my first time seeing your channel. I appreciate the way you get to the point. I am grateful for your info… I’m from Australia… I do get a little confused with some of your terms… peppers (chilli- in Australia)… I realise you mean capsicum I think? I was told that carrot appreciates onion as it keeps away the pests that eat the carrot? Is that not right? I guess I’ll get it in time. Thanks again.
Hello. Yes, capsicum. We call the hot spicy ones Chili here. The ones with no spice are peppers. Onions are ok next to carrots but they compete for some of the same nutrients.
My pepper plants were getting wiped out by caterpillars. From one day to next, one of my pepper plants had gone from looking healthy to looking like someone had taken a weed eater to it. The next season I bought a bag of little onion bulbs, and planted at least four around each pepper plant, and others scattered around the flower bed. I never had trouble with caterpillars, or even saw any ever again. The onions never produced big bulbs, but they more than earned their keep. I'm wondering if co-planting onions with other crops would help reduce damage and loss from other pests. At one point, I was losing almost half of my tomatoes to birds. I never got the opportunity to try, but would onions keep birds away? I'm also wondering if planting onions in the vicinity of my would minimize the slugs that get into the ears and eat them away. Sad to go through the effort to grow corn, only to pull the ear off and find a big fat bug has eaten most of the kernels.
Anything from the allium family does a great job at keeping insects away. Just be careful what you are planting them next to. Beans and peas do not like being planted next to onions or garlic. There are a few others as well. You will have to look at some companion planting charts as the lists are too long for me to cover in a video.
Hello! I have green beans, tomatoes and peppers planted next to each other but in each plants individual fabric container pots. As long as they don’t share the same soil, will it be ok?
How far away from one another do plants need to be that don't do well next to each other? I have seen SO many videos and articles saying not to plant things next to each other but haven't found any advice on how far apart to keep them if you want to grow both.
Well unfortunately my answer will start with “it depends”. It depends on the plants root system mostly. If the have a shallow root system, like an onion, you can plant the other “bad” plant closer. If it has an extensive root system like a tomato, you’ll have to plant it farther apart (opposite side of the garden or another bed).
Raspberries and strawberries are perennials that will take over an area. I wouldn't grow those two together because the raspberries will likely choke out the strawberries. Yes, you can grow the chives and dill with both.
@@CountryLivingExperience I have a raised bed that I planted 1 strawberry and two raspberries in last year. All of them are starting to grow. Less than one week ago I planted in 10 more strawberries. Is it necessary to move them?
I like the general information. I would like to know what you mean by "planting next to" so you mean 12 inches? 24 inches? I have limited space so that information is very important to me. I guess I'm asking if you can be more specific. Thank you!
Thanks. I am talking about 12 inches apart or less depending on the root structure of the plant. Some plants like tomatoes have a large root structure that can reach far for nutrients. Some like onions are shallow and small. You have to study what the plants are first. Hope that helps.

Not sure where your getting your information. Planting onions, specifically spring onions, with carrots is a classic combination that many gardeners swear by.
