Love the whole Genpei Toumaden series! it really set the bar for Dark/Shadow Japan games like Kenseiden, Hagane, and Muramasa: The Demon Blade!

The original Genpei Toumaden was one of Namco's earliest attempts at doing away with its bright and cutesy image.
So let's get rid of the bright and cutesy image by creating a "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS I DON'T EVEN" image. Seriously, these games are like nightmare fuel.

***** Honestly I thought Namco were always really good at the Horror vibe - look at Baraduke. I love the design work there - really cutesy protagonist and friendly aliens, and villains that look as if they hired Giger to do their design work!
This game not only proves that it can graphically can compeat against the snes,sega genesis and atari lynx,but also proves that you don't need a supergrafix system for paralax scrolling,because it can be also done on the TG16 by deviding the 1 layer background into straps to move them individualy, only sad is that the controls from this game feels so tightly.
i remember this game!!! I played it in 1995 when I had went on my first trip to Japan with my brother. I've been talking about it for years and still nobody has any knowledge on it. Not even the gamestops and gameXchanges I've been to. Its a tragedy really.

actually having owned it when it was new , it's not that "weird" it was just different . Remember Namco in the late 80's early 90's were really pioneering what could be done in arcade hardware and games in general.
Now if you want weird try Namco's world cup tennis ...the only Tennis game which doubles as a JRPG.
I know about Genpei Toumaden and this sequel through this year's anime High Score Girl.

Kinda sucks it doesn't have the branching paths and different level styles like the first one did. Also way, WAY less hectic. Maybe the Kacho can beat this one.. Maybe.

Those graphics are nice, but it looks a little awkward to play. Well Done! I like how you kill Tails in one stage. Must be a cultural thing. This game has a cool style.
The game controls fairly well for the most part. Takes a little while to get used to but It's fun when you do :)

I do not get it the boss committed suicide as he was beaten is that yoshitune if it is why is he different

Sub-par game with a crap ending. Of course, this game is a *I used to think it was a bad game, but with even worse games today, it has become a "good" game without even doing anything.*
While I get that this game would be more understandable if you knew more of the folklore behind it, it's still rather oddly designed. And sure as hell didn't expect a bonus stage...
There actually is and believe it or not it's called "the laughing place" took me forever to get it though

The Genpei Toumaden games are great in that even with context they're completely bizarre.
