    Great video as usual, specially the talk about manufacturers.
    Apart from that, that mechanism is one of those I like to work into. Not the best in reliability but easy to repair. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first Sony-made deck for VHS and it was produced during several years with only minor changes.

    Would like a series of videos showing off the best and worst VCRs. Also would love to know what features were hype and which made a significant difference.

      A Running Commentary touring lots of VCRs would be Great! Its so funny how what a person knows becomes easy to take for granted and assume no one else is interested. But it can be so captivating.

    Can you provide a video or comment on this same procedure for a Mitsubishi HS-U55? I followed your videos for cleaning, but may have gotten the tower gear misaligned. Thanks for the valuable and interesting information you provide

    As insanely irrelevant as this is in my life, it was quite difficult to not watch. Timing and vhs in the title is apparently total click bate for me. With everything I have pulled apart, aside from engine run machines, VHS was always the most impressive and fun to figure out. Thanks for the upload and content!

      Its like watching the History Channel only covering something part of everyone's personal History.. and something you can immediately relate to. Cable Channels are mostly gone now.. but this is a Perfect Subject for a TH-cam Channel for wannabe Geeks. As told by a real Service Tech that almost always succeeds.

    Fantastic. Anything to do with Timing Gears and Cams are like Click bate for me. I love your pronunciation of the Japanese companies.. it sounds absolutely correct. The history lesson is great. Industrial to Broadcast to Consumer product lines. Umatic to Betamax to VHS. Monitor vs Line Out differences were Mind Blowing information. As a Sony guy did you ever visit one of the plants where they made video equipment?

      @@12voltvids Yes you have one, and i watch it few years ago, but it wasn't very clear what goes where and there was different gears repair, also mines both was partially dissassembled when i got them. I have managed to sort out most of the timmings but the tape eject tray and the program and switch gears seems to be out of order ... i loose a good 2 days without success and then the power supply blew up due to bad old caps :D Theese are 2 similar decks with same problem, one records, other only player but they are just slightly different on mechanisms and won't fit. The decks are Panasonic VHS -> NV-P5 HQ and the recorder with tuner NV-G45 HQ (a.k.a the recording one that i am trying to fix)

    Yes I was aware that VHS and Beta were part of the same project, which is why they are so similar. The format war shouldn't have happened.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should have been only 1 format, Betamax. That was Sony's plan, and they thought Matsushita and JVC were on board. Then they released the other format.
      Toshiba and Sanyo were in the Beta camp initially.

      @@12voltvids Then RCA released the VBT200 which offered 4 hours of recording time and after that, the average consumer didn't care about Beta. Am I telling the story correctly?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@crashbandicoot4everr when the VHS system first launched it had a 2-hour speed single speed. The first beta machine was also a single speed 1 hour recording time and then beta dropped the speed to beta 2 to give a 2-hour recording speed which was the same that VHS had initially. As you know RCA and JVC had a long running relationship. RCA was known as RCA Victor and JVC was the Victor company of Japan. Many people thought of JVC as the Japanese version of RCA because of that relationship with Victor which was the Victor talking machine I believe. RCA demanded longer than 2 hours on a tape because "Americans will never stand for just 2 hours we need four." JVC refused to compromise the picture quality so RCA went to Panasonic to produce their machines and Panasonic gladly dropped the speed.due to this longer recording time which people didn't seem to care that the quality wasn't as good it wasn't long before JVC dropped their speed but they never went to 4 hours they went to six. Panasonic then added six as well and soon all the other manufacturers out of the EP speed or SLP as Panasonic called it. The reason that all Panasonic machines called it SLP as opposed to EP was because JVC trademarked EP and would not allow their rival Panasonic to use EP as a speed designation, in fact no JVC machines ever had LP. Many would not even play a tape recorded in LP because JVC never recognized LP as it official speed. Later jvc's added it as a playback speed but you got no features, no still frame no slow mo no search just straight playback. When supervhs was developed they specifically forbid any manufacturer from making a machine that could record in super VHS at the lp speed it was SP and EP only.

      @@12voltvids I also read on the Panasonic PV-1100/RCA VCT201 service manual that VHS SP uses guard bands while LP doesn't and the tracks actually overlap so the heads need to be on a different azimuth angle to prevent crosstalk.
