Saw it in the theater with fantastic sound. The gunshots, those LucasFilm sound punches, even when someone moves you can hear that satisfying crink of the leather. If you can see it in the theater it really adds to an already fantastic movie, this and The Suicide Squad make for great companion pieces. One of my favorites of the year.
Saw it twice in October in a theater setting. You're absolutely correct about the thunderous power of those "gun shots"...Damn. *_"Lightning (and thunder) with the blam-blams!!!"_* Made the violence even more...😳😵😬💥💥💥💥
Yeah, yeah, _"Los"_ . 😉 *"Lightning with the blam-blams!"* ⚡ _...And thunder._ 😁 The in theater effect of those already *unexpected* _wall/chair rattling shots_ were 100% unsettling... 💥💥💥💥💥💥
I don't know why, but "lightning with the blam blams" has become the funniest and most iconic line of the movie to me. It set an excellent tone for what I was about to watch.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The actors, the music, the action, the romance, the rivalry, the revelation...it was all so fun. Reminded me of Wild Wild West, Django, and Kill Bill combined. Will there be a part 2?
I believe so. Especially since a lot of people enjoyed it and the director did say he wanted to make a cowboy cinematic universe and that this movie was book one to him so who knows🤷🏾♂️. But I would be surprised if Netflix didn’t greenlit a sequel. I wish Netflix would physically release their stuff more often because i would love to own this movie on 4k Blu-ray
The Harder They Fall Universe (potential spoilers) • The Harder They Fall • Trudy Smith spin-off - Showing Trudys journey to getting her revenge but she has to get herself back together. At the same time, show flashbacks of her backstory. • Rufus Buck spin-off - Showing Bucks dark and tragic backstory that led to him becoming a ruthless outlaw. • Pickett/Beckworth spin-off- A backstory of how both individuals met each other before joining Nat Loves gang. Both characters were some of the comic relief of the main movie so a duo “buddy cop style comedy” movie fits perfectly for them. • The Harder They Fall 2
Wouldn’t mind seeing some of these!!! No to the Rufus Buck spin off IMO he’s a cool character because you find out just enough for solid development, but don’t know too much and he remains mysterious.

This movie here: excited me from beginning to end, action-packed, hilarious, "I'm black y'all, I'm black ya'll etc. cast/each actor created likable characters even the bad guys, and the twist at the end had me crying, and the ending hinted at a potential sequel!!!!! 👏🏾🙏🏾💯🤠🐎💰
They should've totally lead with the soundtrack more in the promotion because that Lauryn Hill track is straight fire, that would have me really hyped I give it a low Full Price It's style over substance , it feel like a live action adaption of a graphic novel that was never made Zazie Baetz's casting as Mary Fields was unfortunate, but I'm not sure who I would've gotten for role instead though, I was thinking Majors' lovecraft country co star Wunmi Mosaku who was also Hunter B-15 from Loki Anyway I had a lot of fun , I think it could become a franchise not sure who but I think they should pull the trigger no pun intended and green light a Bass Reeves show from this Delroy Lindo is kinda slept on especially coming off from Da 5 Bloods
I don’t really see the problem with Zazie’s casting, as this really isn’t biographical to any character save for Bass Reeves. Stagecoach Mary wasn’t a saloon owner, Idris Elba is about 40 pounds heavier and 20 years older than Rufus Buck was when he was hanged, Cherokee Bill died before he turned 21 and LaKeith Stanfield is in his thirties, and some of the characters’ outlaw activity were years or decades apart from each other. Feels like Jeymes Samuel gave the characters these names to maybe prod people to look up their actual history.
Don’t get the style over substance. It definitely had substance, probably more focus on style but it doesn’t take away from the substance of the story. It’s a short story but very well told, all characters are engaging and have depth
Lupita N’yongo or Leslie Jones (If We Were Going Life Accurate) I Believe Those Two Are Much Stronger Talent Than Zazie and Fill the Actually Skintone of the Woman.
The wild Wild West was clearly it’s own movie and not even considered a “black western” nice edgelord comment though. That comparison didn’t make sense
I'm so happy for Jeymes Samuel. His first attempt at this was the unappreciated They Die By Dawn which had the same type of cast ( Idris Elba was on that one too) and style than this one but with a more limited budget.
Some years ago this older lady at my job and one of my coworkers were talking about how they couldn't wait to get home and watch the roots marathon. I expressed how I didn't want to see that slave stuff and they got my behind lol. Like how are y'all excited to see that?? I've done the research and watched the documentaries, I'm good. I have yet to watch Roots or any slave movie, I just recently watched Django for the first time lol. Give me big studio movies about the Moors, the Haitian revolution, black history that you gotta watch TH-cam videos on lol.
@@richierich7229 Explain Othello's black skin. The Moor's sundry act of 1790, how could they have been mistaken as slaves if they didn't bare any resemblance? The 6th Century Historian Procopius wrote "not black-skinned like the moors". The MANY depictions of the Moor's dark skin.
LaKeith Stanfield was the standout for me, he knocked it out the park - every scene. The twist at the end was really predictable to me but aside from that, I enjoyed it a fair bit. It’s been quite a while since I’ve sat down to watch a movie at home and finished it all with no breaks or proper complaints.
This movie reminded me of one episode of WARRIOR where it becomes a full western but with Asian characters and it became one of my favorites. When we see western folk heroes that were primarily played by white actors and see ourselves inserted in their place, it takes some time to adjust, but when you’re on for the ride, it’s a completely new fun experience. This movie was a whole lot of fun.

Well Rufus said that his father left when he was ten, around the same age as Nat was. So Rufus is about ten years older, and was twenty when he killed their father. How old was the dad, no clue, at least forty.

This movie was great. All the triggered weirdos in those ign comments with their not so subtle racism because of them giving this a 9 is even goofier now because it really deserved it.
Lls maybe black folks are just biased because they’re getting representation I’m (half myself btw )which is understandable but honestly story wise it’s a B movie there are way better westerns and Other types of films that are casted with POC, visually it’s cool and the casting is nice but other than that, what makes this movie great?.. seems like everything about it is cool but the dialogue and goofy story and it was too long for what it was..
I really enjoyed this movie! I csn see why it wouldn't be for everyone but I liked it for alot of reasons. One is the comic book feel you talked about. I'm definitely going to rewatch because I know I didn't catch everything. Another is the cast. Jonathan Majors is a star!! It's so crazy how his performance stood out the most when he was in there with heavy hitters like Ragina King and Idris Elba. The supporting cast didn't come to play either. Plenty of standout performances. This movie will age very well
Everything about this film felt really well oiled and stylish. Snappy dialogue, simple but compelling characters, well paced, a straightforward plot that doesnt take itself too seriously and alot of visual flair.
The thing when is with music in movies is you have to have a genius curator to pick the songs and they can't take away from the action of the movie. The music wasn't distracting at all! I need the Playlist in my life!
I wasn’t thrown off by the coloring and design. I loved it. Spot on with the Dick Tracy comparison. I feel like if Wakanda was in the Wild West it would look like this. I do hope in the future they will start bringing more historical figures into big fantasy pictures like this. It was escapism, but afterwards you dive into the true history. That’s good art.
I think this is one of the best western movie. It harkens back to the stakes old westerns have without actually being racist to whites. And the kills were awesome. No native Americans as monsters or animals. Because we ain’t trying to do anything but acknowledge history. This isn’t real but the west was an identity for all wether we liked it or not. Hollywood needs to step up their game Lakif wasn’t wearing a head dress and insulting cultures lol

Their is no such thing as being "racist to whites" impossible. Blacks cant be racist to whites sir. Racism is a white construct. It takes the power to oppress to be be racist. BLACK ppl do.not have the power to oppress whites or any race for that matter. We can be prejudice sure anyone can be prejudice. But we can not be racist. Hurting white ppl feeling or fragilty is not racism. Ppl need to stop throwing that word around because it dilutes racism as to just being mean or hurting someones feelings. Racism is systemic and only POC More specifically African Americans suffer under. Historically and today as well. We live under white supermacy. * also before you hit up a websters dic. On what racism is you need to know the description is just and outline but not the actual within.context. dictionary ia not the holy grail of understanding and classification. So dont go there.

All I cared about is the Full Price. LaKeith Stanfield was my favorite character. He wasn't weird he was "cool" 😎 this film is black excellence point blank. Soundtrack is FIRE
.....They were simply trying to say that LaKeith's _"Cherokee Bill"/Crawford Goldsby_ was portrayed as the quiet, lurking, wordsmith, who was nonchalant, kinda aloof/detached, yet a _"no rules apply"_ killer. Other than the murderous aspect, LaKeith has had those type of understated character roles. In this case, is that unsuspecting silent killer type. What was his line? *_"No, it all comes down to who's alive and who's dead."_* 💡
I appreciate you guys for having this discussion and addressing that this movie could throw some off upon first viewing. I wasn't going into this expecting a hyper-stylized fantasy western with a black cast. I only knew about it being a western, so the film's style really hit me in an odd way. I love every single actor in here and their characters. I never saw a trailer for this, so maybe that's what threw me off? 😂 I'm willing to give it a second viewing because I think knowing what it's all about going into it will help.
Thought it was pretty awful. Great production design, good performances, but terrible script, cliché-ridden story, and one-dimensional characterisation.
@@tycarne7850 almost like dude saw Gangs of New York copied and pasted but made it a western and changed the races haha but I thought the director did a good job
I knew it was stylized like a comic book, when I seen that town honestly it blew me away a bit, I love comics (not current Marvel and DC) and I love when they fuse it into movies be it gritty or silly and I loved this movie's soundtrack.
As good as this looks, you guys overlooked another movie that came out in 2013, that was a much lower budgeted movie. Nonetheless; it was a very good Black cowboy movie, called; "They Die By Dawn".
💜 Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Michael Beach, Lakeith Stanfield, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans Jr., the newcomers, who else? Lol excellent cast. LOVED the costuming. I loved the pace of the scenes..I totally recognized the Quentin Tarantino/Django influence in the beginning. I loved ALL of the characters…😂 I was HURT after the Cherokee Bill/Jim Beckworth showdown 🥺😭.
Amazing movie, I watched it in the theater first and then again when it was released on Netflix. I accidentally picked up on the twist early because I noticed two of the characters (sang/hummed/whistled) the same song throughout the film. I cannot find this song, it's not on the soundtrack. If I can find the instrumental of it, that would make my damn day.
😗🎶 *_'Away with the Wind She Goes'_* The _song/jingle/theme_ was written by *Jeymes Samuel* . *_"...As her garden grows,_* *_hold those flowers close."_* Nat sings the lyrics of the song _(and the melody is heard as scored music a time or two),_ but then when I heard Rufus Buck whistling it 😗🎶 as he entered the jail, I did wonder how he knew that tune...❓ 🤔 🎼 Jeymes wrote a lot (if not most) of the music you hear in the score. Even when someone else performed it.
.....The song I really liked was *_'Three and Thirty Years'_* 🎶🎼. Jeymes also wrote that, and it was _beautifully_ perfomed by Alice Smith and Fisk Jubilee Singers. It is the song at the start of the movie when Rufus takes a seat at the table and it is heard all the way through the violence/murders/loss/destruction _(swirling strings included)._ The lyrics apparently have something to do with the story: *_"Three and thirty years I tried, to forget all the tears I cried..Then one who knew me long ago..."_* 🎶 The melody to _'Three and Thirty Years'_ is also heard at another point in the film...Seems(?) to at least be Alice Smith's soaring _voice_ when Rufus tosses Nat the Razor and also(?) when Rufus and Nat have their final confrontation. Smith also performed _'Wednesday's Child'_ (also written by Jeymes). You know, the singing in Trudy Smith's (TS) saloon.
@@m.worthy Yes and I was truly hoping to find the instrumental or score to this movie. I started collecting them years ago when I was a kid and first watched the movie Glory. I was also looking for the muffled instrumental of the song during the Train Stop scene...sounds like King King Riddim but I just want that version.
Yeah, I'm absolutely certain that you'll be able to get the instrumental to _'King Kong Riddim'_ . Also great that Jeymes had the good sense to "muff" the rap out during the train scene and just go with the "instrumental" *polyrhythmic* approach! 😉
I tried watching it and it’s not good (to me) I got to where the main dude kisses domino and she punches him, it was tarentinoesque but not as good as far as the cinematography and dialogue? Tho granted I got what 15 min in, Casting looked great but I just couldn’t get with it
The look of this movie was gorgeous and the score was glorious! This film is a must-see; the cast, the crew, everyone involved are stellar. I frickin LOVED IT!!! xxx
This is a great film .. a black western not with the characters ( based on real people ) being slaves. Must be a culture shock to Black Americans. Im tired of slave movies , this is better than Slave porn Django . Those who say its not as good as people say probably love Kayne west ,terry crews, Ice cube, 50 cent,Raven Symone and Charles Barkley. Wait for the next torture porn slave film to get awards. I will stick to this .
Always love Double Toasted but man, Danielle is pretty much useless. She never reviews any of the material discussed and just sits there with her usual blank expression and a smile
If you can see it in one of the limited theaters it was released to in October _(if you're in the USA)_ the theater setting adds to the impact. I saw it _twice_ in a theater setting before it was released for streaming via Netflix. Glad that is how I'll always remember first seeing it.
I loved this movie but I'm shocked they liked it cause of the amazing soundtrack that was mainly hip hop and the fact that nat love didn't end up with a white woman 🤣.
The movie actually doesn't have _"hip-hop"_ playing throughout it at all though... 💡 As far as "rap" is concerned in a 2+ hour movie, there is only the Jay-Z & Cudi _'Guns Go Bang'_ track that plays during this Western's *opening credits sequence* _(Cudi isn't rapping),_ and the _brief_ moment when Nat and Cuffee are in route to the bank in the "white" town _(I recall that bein' Lauryn Hill rhymin')._ Other than those two tracks in a 2+ hour movie, there is no "hip-hop" soundscape in the movie. _'King Kong Riddim'_ is used only as a instrumental _(no rap)._ I think of all this every time I hear or read a reviewer who comments about how much "hip-hop" is throughout the movie, when actually _there is essentially none_ - but in spirit 💡.
🎼🎶 *'THREE AND THIRTY YEARS'* 🎶🎼 (the _Alice Smith and Fisk Jubilee Singers_ version) Jeymes wrote that in addition to most of the entire score. I like how from the very first music _(not counting young Chase Dillon plucking that guitar)_ viewers hear in the film, Jeymes is already giving insight into a overall tale and setting a tone with the song's lyrics as Rufus Buck takes a seat at the dinner table _("Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?")_ and the murders transpire. *Three and thirty years I tried* *To forget all the tears I cried* *Then one who knew me long ago* *Appeared upon my lonely road* *Warning me of trouble soon* *And talking me of pending doom* *Then all at once he disappeared* *And left me in a tomb of fear* *Pray in silence, brave the cold* *A son, a mother, priest and robe* *Will hold The Word until their sleep* *A dove will fly above the keep* *Now forever life is gone* *Beholden to a sacred song* *The Sun will too late understand* *That dark consumes the light of man* 🎼🎶 📽 🎬
I love the cast and cinematography were done nicely. There is an of moments the film lost me. However, I can overlook it. The action was decent, but the dialogue between the characters. I can't get enough of it.
This movie didn’t do black cowboys any justice. It was entertaining to those that know jack about our history. The whole project was designed to hold the attention of a younger audience, I get it. But wild west in real life was hella dirty, and cowboys weren’t fly. Bass Reeves deserves a realistic big budget movie of his own...we talking a real life bad ass. Wtf Black Hollywood, we can do better than this....tell our stories.
Love the show fellas but the black westworld and BET cosplay joke is exactly why Hollywood DOESN'T give us more movies like this unfortunately, we are looked at as a non entity when it come to stories from the "old west" but research where the word "Cowboys" actually comes from and you might be surprised..... loved this movie!!! If you can see it in the theater it really adds to an already fantastic movie, this and The Suicide Squad make for great companion pieces. One of my favorites of the year.
Saw it twice in October in a theater setting. You're absolutely correct about the thunderous power of those "gun shots"...Damn.

You are so right!! The sounds were amazing!!
Definitely!
I don't know why, but "lightning with the blam blams" has become the funniest and most iconic line of the movie to me. It set an excellent tone for what I was about to watch.
Nah, the funniest line was "CLOSE SHAVE"!!! lol
This grown man shit.. We could die! The foreshadowing amazing.

The Harder They Fall Universe (potential spoilers)
• The Harder They Fall
• Trudy Smith spin-off - Showing Trudys journey to getting her revenge but she has to get herself back together.

Shout out to Regina King aka Huey and Riley Boondocks.
jonathan majors is my favorite actor today, Lovecraft Country is my favorite HBO show ever and he's perfect in everything he does.
Guessing you've already seen *Jonathan Majors* in the Western *_'HOSTILES'_* starring _Christian Bale_ . 2017.
Timothée Chalamet _('Dune', 'The King', etc.)_ is also in _'Hostiles'._
This movie here: excited me from beginning to end, action-packed, hilarious, "I'm black y'all, I'm black ya'll etc. cast/each actor created likable characters even the bad guys, and the twist at the end had me crying, and the ending hinted at a potential sequel!!!!! 👏🏾🙏🏾💯🤠🐎💰
They should've totally lead with the soundtrack more in the promotion because that Lauryn Hill track is straight fire, that would have me really hyped
I give it a low Full Price
It's style over substance , it feel like a live action adaption of a graphic novel that was never made
Zazie Baetz's casting as Mary Fields was unfortunate, but I'm not sure who I would've gotten for role instead though, I was thinking Majors' lovecraft country co star Wunmi Mosaku who was also Hunter B-15 from Loki
Anyway I had a lot of fun , I think it could become a franchise not sure who but I think they should pull the trigger no pun intended and green light a Bass Reeves show from this
Delroy Lindo is kinda slept on especially coming off from Da 5 Bloods
I don’t really see the problem with Zazie’s casting, as this really isn’t biographical to any character save for Bass Reeves. Stagecoach Mary wasn’t a saloon owner, Idris Elba is about 40 pounds heavier and 20 years older than Rufus Buck was when he was hanged, Cherokee Bill died before he turned 21 and LaKeith Stanfield is in his thirties, and some of the characters’ outlaw activity were years or decades apart from each other. Feels like Jeymes Samuel gave the characters these names to maybe prod people to look up their actual history.
I was thinking Wunmi too! Overall enjoyed 8.5/10!
Bob Cobb The problem lies in dark skin women, particularly heavy set ones never being love interest in these films
Don’t get the style over substance. It definitely had substance, probably more focus on style but it doesn’t take away from the substance of the story. It’s a short story but very well told, all characters are engaging and have depth
Lupita N’yongo or Leslie Jones (If We Were Going Life Accurate)
I Believe Those Two Are Much Stronger Talent Than Zazie and Fill the Actually Skintone of the Woman.
A western with all-black characters and the N-word was never used. I just realized that!
They said "nincompoop" at least once 🤷🏾♂️😄
This is what Wild Wild West wish that it was

I'm so happy for Jeymes Samuel. His first attempt at this was the unappreciated They Die By Dawn which had the same type of cast ( Idris Elba was on that one too) and style than this one but with a more limited budget.
I remember the director of Alien wanted to do the the Bass Reeves story into a movie with Denzel Washington.

You all over looked the sister that played Cuffee, Dannielle Deadwyler. I think she did a great job, but nobody mentions her.

BLACK ppl do.not have the power to oppress whites or any race for that matter. We can be prejudice sure anyone can be prejudice. But we can not be racist. Film of the year imo. Loved everything about it.
Thought it was pretty awful. Great production design, good performances, but terrible script, cliché-ridden story, and one-dimensional characterisation.

I noticed that too. It looked like a stage production.
I do agree but the movie was great
My only gripe with the movie everything looked like they just made it
Amazing movie, I watched it in the theater first and then again when it was released on Netflix. I accidentally picked up on the twist early because I noticed two of the characters (sang/hummed/whistled) the same song throughout the film. I cannot find this song, it's not on the soundtrack. If I can find the instrumental of it, that would make my damn day.
😗🎶 *_'Away with the Wind She Goes'_*
The _song/jingle/theme_ was written by *Jeymes Samuel* .
*_"...As her garden grows,_*
*_hold those flowers close."_*
Nat sings the lyrics of the song _(and the melody is heard as scored music a time or two),_ but then when I heard Rufus Buck whistling it 😗🎶 as he entered the jail, I did wonder how he knew that tune...❓ 🤔
🎼 Jeymes wrote a lot (if not most) of the music you hear in the score. Even when someone else performed it.
.....The song I really liked was *_'Three and Thirty Years'_* 🎶🎼.
Jeymes also wrote that, and it was _beautifully_ perfomed by Alice Smith and Fisk Jubilee Singers. It is the song at the start of the movie when Rufus takes a seat at the table and it is heard all the way through the violence/murders/loss/destruction _(swirling strings included)._
The lyrics apparently have something to do with the story:
*_"Three and thirty years I tried, to forget all the tears I cried..Then one who knew me long ago..."_* 🎶
The melody to _'Three and Thirty Years'_ is also heard at another point in the film...Seems(?) to at least be Alice Smith's soaring _voice_ when Rufus tosses Nat the Razor and also(?) when Rufus and Nat have their final confrontation.
Yeah, I'm absolutely certain that you'll be able to get the instrumental to _'King Kong Riddim'_ . Also great that Jeymes had the good sense to "muff" the rap out during the train scene and just go with the "instrumental" *polyrhythmic* approach! 😉
😊 *GLORY* ...I've had that soundtrack forever (Haha).
*_"Call To Arms"_* , etc.

I'm dead 😂😂😂
😂damn shots fired at the double toasted black cards
The movie actually doesn't have _"hip-hop"_ playing throughout it at all though... 💡
As far as "rap" is concerned in a 2+ hour movie, there is only the Jay-Z & Cudi _'Guns Go Bang'_ track that plays during this Western's *opening credits sequence* _(Cudi isn't rapping),_ and the _brief_ moment when Nat and Cuffee are in route to the bank in the "white" town _(I recall that bein' Lauryn Hill rhymin')._
Other than those two tracks in a 2+ hour movie, there is no "hip-hop" soundscape in the movie. _'King Kong Riddim'_ is used only as a instrumental _(no rap)._ I think of all this every time I hear or read a reviewer who comments about how much "hip-hop" is throughout the movie, when actually _there is essentially none_ - but in spirit 💡.
😂😂. If Nat ended up w/ a white woman They’d give it a “” better than sex” rating
Danielle derailed that whole review by the end.
🎼🎶 *'THREE AND THIRTY YEARS'* 🎶🎼
(the _Alice Smith and Fisk Jubilee Singers_ version)
Jeymes wrote that in addition to most of the entire score.
*Three and thirty years I tried*
*To forget all the tears I cried*
*Then one who knew me long ago*
*Appeared upon my lonely road*
*Warning me of trouble soon*
