Graduated Arcadia Class1965. I played in the band, under the directing of Ron Hoar (AKA: Uncle Ronnie) . My Senior Year we played Washington Greys, and marched in The Tournament of Roses Parade. I live near Napa and am just sick that I didn’t know Arcadia was marching in Napa. Washington Greys was and still is my favorite March, and is the only March on my flash-drive. Arcadia has always had a top contending band, and thankfully, continues to do so. Good luck and much continued success.
Ron Hoar was possibly the Best High School Band Director EVER! I'm a 1978 Graduate of Arcadia, and was proud to have been a part of that great tradition that Ron Hoar started. My freshman and sophomore years were at West High in Torrance, and our director Ron Large I believe IMHO an equal to Ron Hoar. Ron Large did not have the support of the school district as Ron Hoar did, which makes a HUGE difference. Although we never beat Arcadia overall, we did frequently have Higher Music Scores than Arcadia, the most important aspect of any music organization. Ron Hoar came to our first two Band Camps to assist us, and at least two other times in my two years at West. I was truly blessed to have been in what I consider to be the two best High School Music programs in the country.
Those years in the band at Arcadia under the direction of your Grandpa are real fond memories. You Grandfather really was a friend to his students in addition to being one of the greatest high school band directors that ever lived. We were proud of our band, and we still are. I don't remember how many children your grandfather had, but I met a son who was probably at least 5 years, and probably more, younger than me. I don't remember the name, either. Sorry. That many have been your dad?
I remember after performing this, we were marching down the rest of the street and on the parallel street, there was another band playing the exact same march. It feels weird to hear another band play the same march in the same season on the same day and at the same review.
Amazing sound and some serious old school Arcadia marching! On the other video you can hear a guy say "This is high end--from Southern California.". Congratulations on a terrific performance.
I ran after our performance to watch this, but I was only able to catch the last half of Arcadia's performance. I hope they will come compete in NCBA in the near future!
Your Grandpa was the greatest High School Band Director Ever! I met up with him many years later as a volunteer for the Tournament of Roses Parade, and he actually remembered me. I was shocked! I met him a few times when he assisted my first High School Band, West High, many years earlier. He was a class act, and was able to get the Best Performance of his students in a 100% positive way. May he Rest In Peace.
