This is awesome! Gotta be proud of yourself man, perseverance is key. I myself started surfing in my 30s and couldn't stop. It's been 10 years now. One thing that improved my style was riding on a Carver
That’s awesome. I’m just about to start using my SUP. 56 yrs old, both hips replaced in the last 3 years & watching my mate start a decline in health with MND. Life is way too short.
What a great video!! I have pictures of me bodyboarding but none surfing. It’s been awhile. Last wave was a ripple in a wave pool with Ben in Omaha. Living in the Midwest will do that. Stoked for you!!
I started at 42 years old. Face more forward. I like to keep my hands out front to help remind me to face forward. Also keep the hands off the rails when popping up as I can see they are creating quite a bit of drag. Doing good mate. I found doing mobility/strength exercises in the morning helps with my surfing. GoPro video is invaluable for your surfing journey it helped me heaps. You can rewatch mistakes back and you will quickly realise what you should have done.
Congratulations, but you have a bad habit that might be difficult to break after all these years: your slightly “open” stance, i.e., with your front foot off the center line. You need to have it centered on the centerline, like your back foot. I see that the vast majority of your rides are backside, that is, with your back to the wave. You’re kind of in the dreaded “poo position,” sitting back a bit, butt sticking out, which weights your heels and makes backside riding easy. It’s more pronounced in your earlier videos but it’s not much better in the later ones. That all starts with your open stance. If you got your feet centered, you could go frontside, or “down the line,” much easier and with a lot more control. You’ll be able to go rail to rail easier too. Your frontside rides here look a bit out of control, with your arms waving around a lot, whereas in fact frontside riding should be easy and comfortable. You might think that you need to change your pop up to,accomplish this, spring up harder in order to bring that foot over a bit more. You don’t. Your popup is fine. Just shift your foot a bit once you stand. The board is like a bike. Once you’re moving, it’s stable enough for you to shift your feet slightly to get into the right position. Good riders shift their feet frequently during a ride, especially on a long board. I really suggest you focus on this. It will improve your surfing a lot, and unless you go whole hog into the sport, there’s only so much more you can learn. I started surfing at 50, btw, and I’m 66 now and surf regularly.
I’m 45 and want to become a surfer 🏄🏼♂️ I’ve always loved the culture. Might get my first wave in San Clemente next month. Thanks for the inspiration and kind advice.
