    As an Aussie who lives in the US I have to say that these guys do better analysis and coverage than 95% of the American media. I also kind of enjoy the unstated premise that Australian politics is so boring there's a market for this detailed coverage of the US scene. America is never boring, for better or worse (usually worse).

    • @rudolfivonhabsburgkingofth601
      @rudolfivonhabsburgkingofth601 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Republicans and Democrats mean different things when they talk about freedom. The Democrats are using freedom to mean a lack of constraint on choice, and the Republicans are using it to mean communal self determination. This is a little surprising, seeing as Democrats are in favour of civil rights and Republicans are in favour of negative liberty. These contradictions should work themselves out eventually. I suspect as the Republicans abandon liberalism, they will have a more coherent view of freedom as a communal right.

    To be clear, semiconductor nodes are different to the size of the microchip itself. The smaller the nodes the more can be packed into a chip increasing the processing power. But there are a whole lot of trade-offs when you start increasing processing power - like increasing heat which can destroy the chip - and these require engineering work arounds which may increase the bulk of the chip anyway. A quick scan of the interweb suggests that '2nm nodes', which at only 10x the 'diameter' of a single Si atom (given that quantum mechanics takes over at these scales and the term 'diameter' doesn’t really make sense), are a not currently realistic but represent a marketing tool i.e. very much in r&d territory but not commercially viable - yet.

    I think your last guest has undersold the challenge for countries in chip fab tech - EACH COUNTRY only has the ability to make ONE of the inputs (and these chips themselves are just inputs in the boards next to memory and storage, which in turn are components of a computer or phone etc), and it’s not like China is aiming to catch up to some mythical other country that can fabricate from end-to-end. The lithography for instance, that only one country can do, has laser technology that only one or two OTHER countries can do. When you see that list of countries, you’ll quickly notice the same list that the USA has been leaning on. It’s really a peak example of the “old world” of global trade, just-in-time manufacturing and supply dependencies. If trade barriers go up and countries try to go it alone, they’ll never achieve what they can now.
    China might well be aiming to be “first”, but it’s more incredible that Japan never took the crown and the USA never kept it. You hear about “global manufacturing chains” but this industry truly has no other choice. It’s too big and too hard. Airbus makes planes across various countries in the EU for mostly that reason, even if they started off doing it for political reasons - remember, the Concorde was just 2 countries, England and France (in concord with each other).
    As for what 2nm-3nm can achieve and what software can run on it, you can run any software on anything (and you can call a lot of things “AI”), but what small transistors gets you is lower power - important for laptops, and especially smartphones - and more obviously, fitting that power on a smaller device. That’s why smartphones aren’t “Intel Inside”. And those powerful expensive power-hungry gaming cards (also used for crypto and AI) generate so much heat (and draw so much power) that they really need the smaller nanometre tech, just to fit the next version in the box as well as not melt!

      Obviously America still has a grossly entrenched class system due to a lack of welfare and public housing and public services. Meaning the average person still has it tough. But that's not a thing that switching back to republicans would help at all. It was just as bad for them 4 years ago too. Hasn't changed for years

    One important qualification is that is it not proper to characterise the practice of court-shopping as the province of conservatives alone when we have just seen democrats prosecute Trump in such a conspicuous manner. I find that analysis incoherent.
    In terms of the efficacy of court shopping, while the Supreme Court justices have demonstrated differing degrees of fidelity to textualism or purposivism in rendering judgment, nonetheless their political philosophy gives way to their judicial philosophy in serving the judicial function of applying the law. Plainly, as a lawyer, I can tell you that ascertaining a particular bias towards the plain reading of the statute is what's important in any predictive analysis - know your beak! This is precisely why many of the conservative causes have not been countenanced by the Court despite a conservative majority. In law, nothing is simple!
