  • Today, Nov 6th, we celebrate the birthday of the inventor of basketball, James Naismith!
He was born Nov 6, 1861 in Ontario, Canada. At 30 years old, Mr. Naismith left Canada for the US to take a job as a P.E. teacher at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Mr. Naismith noticed how bored and restless his kids were during the brutally cold winters. The YMCA asked him to come up with a new indoor sport as an “athletic distraction” to help athletes stay fit and occupied through the winter.
He took from the most popular games at the time - rugby, lacrosse, soccer, baseball and football - in hopes of taking the best from each sport and came up with “basket ball”.
On Dec 21st, 1891, he pinned his 13 rules for the game up on his Springfield gym and the first organized game of “basket ball” was played. The rest is history…Kid History!
Mr. Naismith went on to become the first college basketball coach in the country at Kansas University in 1898.
Today, basketball is played by over 400 million people worldwide making it the 2nd most popular sport played in the world. All thanks to Mr. Naismith trying to serve and innovate for kids, students and athletes during cold winters.
    So Happy birthday, James Naismith!
