  • This is a documentary that follows a variety of people in the Ultra orthodox community in Israel, and tells different stories. First of is the Israeli election, in a feud between the sides in the community whether they should vote or not vote, second issue is the issue regarding education and poverty, where two women try to change the enviroment regarding haredi education and family planning, and the third part is about the controversy surrounding the internet in the Haredi world. Should internet be allowed or not?

With modern society drowning in apathy, mental illness, addiction, depression, and people quietly leading meaninglessness lives, it's an inspiration to see these people choose a different way, not one based on Success and comfort, but God.

I am Jewish, was raised secular and became observant in my late teen years. From the haredim I have met, I do not agree with their lifestyle. Yes, there is a lot of immoral, irrelevant, and distracting influences with the modern world and technology, but I do not understand why they are afraid of it. The torah should enlighten a person to draw out the good from everything, and to stay away from what has no value. To lead a life of poverty and seclusion is not even a torah perspective, because it says in the Mishnah a person should have a job and study, and be active in the world. Like I pray and study, but later will watch TV or go to a bar and drink with friends, and I do not see myself as wrong for doing it. Their society is built for those who are going to be ultra torah scholar types, but those are far and few, and most just end up stuck in a system they do not like.

+matisyahup613 I see that there is a ton of immoral, irrelevant, and distracting influences in their ancient world as well, even more so than the modern world and technology that you speak of. Truth is religion is poison. The less you have it in your life, the better. You don't need religion to be a moral and productive person.

They get to look forward to a life where they have a community- one that is invested in each other. They get to look forward to stable homes where divorce, cheating, single parent households are all but entirely absent.
They get to look forward to traditional values, where a woman is truly valued and respected, rather than being told that the ultimate goal is to compete with men and have a career- rather than a doting husband and kids to pass a legacy onto. They get to look forward to being seen as a person rather than a sex object.
They get to look forward to a community that lacks crime, p*rn addiction, STDs, and one night stands. They get to look forward to spending their lives being invested in each other, building memories, rather than staring at phones and computer screens all day, every day.
They get to look forward to a community that is there for each other during hard times, such as when someone is sick or a loved one passes. Where they are there to celebrate a birth or a wedding.
They get to look forward to a relationship with G-d, and receiving guidance to living a life that THANKFULLY, lacks the many faults and immoralities of secular society.

Please people stop generalizing so much. Don't say "jews" as if every single Jewish person believed or acted in the same way as the people depicted on this documentary. This is an extremist minority group within an already small Jewish world population. In fact, just look at the amount of renowned scientists, philosophers, inventors, writers... that are Jewish, yet they're deeply involved with what this specific Haredi group would call "evil", "secular" knowledge that's "forbidden". Unfortunately, there's crazy extremes in every belief system and Judaism is no exception. You cannot judge Judaism as a whole just based on what these ignorant people choose to do and how they choose to interpret scriptures.

    • @kayper54
      @kayper54 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

But what else SHALL we call them? If we knew what each, different extremist sect called themselves (Naturei Kart-ians, maybe?) we could then call them that. But I think I can say that most non-Jewish people have no idea how many there are, all over the world, especially since most ultra-orthodox Jews look and behave so similarly. I mean, there might be very subtle differences, but I would be hard-pressed to tell you which person on the street belongs to which ultra-orthodox sect just from looking at them walking by.

These are not extremists, nor are rheyba cult. They are growing quickly. These scientists, philosophers, and inventors were religious somewhat in their lifetime. Maybe not as religious as the Haredim, but they were definitely religious. Some secular traditions are outlawed in accordance to Halacha.
I agree you cannot judge Judaism by one group, but you can judge it by its scriptures.
These people are far from ignorant, and how they interpret scriptures are more authentic than what you could ever try to do with them.

I am a british born muslim citizen, and me myself and a group of 40 other young lad's went to Palestine in 2003, first of all going to Jordan and then Palestine and then at last flew to saudi arabia to perform our umrah, not being horrible at all and that is the gods honest truth but when the Jews dressed all in black clothing with their long coats and big black hats use to walk past us in big groups they use to give us the creeps with their long platts moving from side to side, seriously don't know why but we just use to get that horrible feeling like making our skin crawl, like I mentioned not being horrible at all, but I think the reason being why we felt like that is because they are not friendly people at all, and seriously I am not just saying that because I'm a Muslim, we seen alot of their arrogance and their behaviour how they come across people that are tourist's, journalists aswel as human rights activists, they literally treat them like dirt only because they are told the truth about how they treat Palestinian people.

kayper54 1) Orthodox Jews seek to do God's will above all else, and to love God. This is exactly what Jesus was preaching to do, he said those were the most important commandments (along with love your neighbor as yourself). 2) Jesus called out the Pharisees (essentially the state powers among Jews of his day), just as the Orthodox is calling out the Israeli government, telling them to repent and seek God's will. The Orthodox are so strong in their convictions many are even opposed to Zionism. This is like calling the Pharisees hypocrites, as Jesus did so strongly 2000 years prior. 3) Christ taught humility and to reject worldliness. The Orthodox also seek humble living and reject worldliness.
On core doctrine I fail to see much difference at all. The only thing the Orthodox are missing is recognizing that Jesus is their spiritual brother, and in fact messiah.

If orthodox jews follow the torah and all its teachings, and the torah is just the old testament of the bible, why don't they give sacrifices to god as atonement for their sins thats all over the old testament. For example if one covets thy neighbor one needs to sacrifice a female calf in order to receive gods forgiveness. As Christians Jesus died for our sins thus not requiring these old testament sacrifices of penance. And since jews believe jesus wasn't messiah why do they not follow old testament guidelines of those sacrifices as penance for their sins? Or am i completely wrong in my understanding about this (i don't have a strong religious upbringing)

I'm not religious, but I'm a believer. All I wanna say is computers or other modern technology including modern weapon are not in themselves dangerous, but some people using them are dangerous and demonic. Like women putting filthy staff to TH-cam, like them tormenting and torturing animals, severily beating horses like possessed by demons. I love animals, that's why I consider myself to be far above generally other Jewish people...and gentiles. But I'm for all the people, Jewish or Gentiles, who wouldn't harm any animal, because just such people are really G_d's people.

Rabbinate Apartheid incite the ‘Crime of crimes'
(by Ronnie Kasrils , South Africa's Deputy Minister of Defence (1994-99); Water & Forestry Minister (1999-2004); and Minister for Intelligence Services (2004-2008). He has retired from government but is active in the Palestine Solidarity Committee.)
Nelson Mandela frequently declared that "Palestine was the greatest moral issue of our time". After we toppled the Apartheid regime in 1994, he went further, saying "We South Africans cannot consider ourselves free until the Palestinian People are free".
Millions of us in South Africa collectively recoiled from Israel's gruesome assault on the people of Gaza during those 51 nightmarish days of "Operation Protective Edge" and the attendant ongoing cruelty in the West Bank. As the dust settled, we were left shocked beyond belief as we witnessed a community of 1.8 million in ruins; Khozaa, Shujaiyya, Beit Hanoun, with entire families and neighbourhoods, gone.
According to the United Nations, 2,131 Palestinians were killed during Israel's offensive. Of those 501 were children, with 70 percent under 12.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza recorded 10,918 people injured including 3,312 children and 2,120 women. According to the United Nations, 244 schools were shelled and one used as a military base by Israeli soldiers. Al Mezan human rights organisation documented at least 10,920 houses damaged or destroyed of which 2,853 were completely flattened. Eight hospitals - resulting in six being taken out of service - 46 NGOs, 50 fishing boats, 161 mosques, and 244 vehicles were also hit.
Eighty percent of Gazan families have no way to feed themselves and are dependent on aid. Farmland in the border areas has been defined as a buffer zone which Israel unilaterally extends by direct gunfire upon farmers. When you deprive a population of the means of life and of movement, when the injured cannot access healthcare, when the exiled are forced time and again back into canvas tents, and when all of this happens under ferocious attack by land, sea and air with the international community looking on whilst quietly arming Israel - what would you call this?
Genocide. For the first time with regards to Israel and its' actions in Gaza, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which I am proud to be a juror for, has examined the crime of genocide. As Professor John Dugard, another Tribunal Jurist explains: "The crime of genocide is the crime of crimes. Great care should be taken in considering it. Nevertheless Operation Protective Edge was of such gravity that the Russell Tribunal believes it is necessary to consider whether this crime has been committed."
The characteristics of this crime involve killing, causing serious bodily harm or inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction in whole or in part of a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. Unlike the crime against humanity it must be inflicted with the intent to destroy the group in whole or in part. What we found from this session of the Tribunal is that we are on the brink of a genocidal apartheid, with incitement to genocide a real and present danger, articulated across many levels of Israeli society, on both social and traditional media, from football fans, police officers, media commentators, religious leaders, legislators, and government ministers.
Apartheid. The people of South Africa, save for a minority of Zionists and their hangers on, are horrified. We have known apartheid. The freedom fighters among us visiting the occupied Palestinian territories have unanimously declared "we are reminded of apartheid but what we see is far worse". The apartheid system in South Africa required cheap black labour to make the economy function and thus the state kept them alive - if barely. But there were still huge similarities with Israeli apartheid.
As in Israel, the "non-white" people or "non-Europeans" (Apartheid terms) were deprived of equal rights and freedom of movement; had their homes in white towns demolished and were removed to wired-off ghetto settlements; faced check points, undignified searches, constant harassment and strict requirements for work permits. If you failed to produce one and were in a white town, you went straight to jail. Any resistance was met with police repression, imprisonment, torture and sometimes massacres such as the most infamous at Sharpeville in 1960 where 69 peaceful protesters were shot dead. However, no African (black) townships or Bantustan settlements were ever bombed from the sky or attacked by tanks and artillery.
During those bad old days, the people of South Africa learnt the lessons of struggle. Foremost was never to give in to repression but to continue to resist. To submit meant to effectively validate and exonerate the oppressor's system. To be intimidated or shocked by punitive repression into submission meant giving the opportunity to the oppressor to claim that the oppressed were quite content with their lot. They would then boast that their "blacks" were better off and happier than those in independent Africa.
So we South Africans who went through the struggle understand very well a people's right to resist tyranny and occupation. Even the right to resist with
weapons is recognised in international law. In our apartheid struggle we contemptuously rejected the "terrorist" barbs hurled at us by the likes of Reagan and Thatcher and were inspired by the international community understanding and supporting our just struggle.
Moral duty. With such a legacy we benefited from the international solidarity and the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS) and understand our moral duty. We cannot tolerate a critique that questions the Palestinian people's right to resist by whatever means they deem necessary. We reject the attempts to equate the violence of the two sides as though there can be parity with Israel's state terrorism and Palestinian resistance. We reject the nonsense of the "terrorism" of the Resistance having the sinister motive of "digging tunnels". We easily understand that it was precisely those tunnels on the borders of Gaza that halted Israeli land forces from advancing to inflict greater carnage.
Solidarity demonstrations in cities and towns around South Africa (200,000 in Cape Town) have urged our own ANC Government and all governments everywhere to stop playing the game of calling on both sides to cease violence as a precondition to ceasefire and negotiations. We certainly go as far as pressurising government to implement BDS against apartheid Israel, as the ANC requested all governments to do so during our struggle, and not to toothlessly say that this is the task of civil society. It is governments who apply sanctions and ensure they are implemented by the public and private sector.
The findings of the RToP have served to educate and mobilize governments, institutions, civil society and solidarity movements to implement Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions tactics and policies. Most significant has been the RToP’s investigation into Israel's practise of ethnic cleansing and currently of what the Russell Tribunal has articulated as murder, persecution and extermination.
The barbaric onslaught on Gaza July-August 2014 will be a main focus of our campaigning for accountability of not just Israel but third party states. Israel and its accomplices must not be allowed to get away with the extermination of a people. We must prevent the crime of genocide from taking place. What we saw in Gaza 2014 can and will happen again, if the world remains silent. The world must stand by the people of Gaza, of the West Bank, and the Palestinian refugees. This is for the sake of peace and justice for all living in the entire land of Israel/Palestine.

Also as I posted in response to someone else I do think the birth rates are greatly inflated as the birth rates are very uneven. One women in a family will have no children while another will have six children and this is sad (including being very uneven among two women but you could exclude those with zero children who don't send their kid to a Yeshiva since they don't have any to get a high number with a flawed sample) but how many men are willing to live off the government which these women prefer marrying. The answer is less then people think I suspect but they have their own propaganda that many people fall for.

I should think that my suspicions of zealotry are as nothing compared to the Haredi's suspicions of those who are not Haredi, and any sweeping generalisations one may come to about them are once again trivial compared to the assumptions they obviously make about those who do not share their beliefs. I certainly wouldn't spit on someone because I didn't like the way they dressed, for instance, and I don't think a belief system which would lead one to act this way worthy of any great respect.

I haven't watched this whole documentary, but l feel, as in most communities, it's not totally monolithic. Perhaps much more than other communities in terms of dress and outlook.
There are those who want to be quite insular, and shut the world out and others who keep informed about the world and strike a balance between their personal beliefs/practices with that, i.e. professionals such as doctors, lawyers and such.
I disagree entirely, however, in an anti-zionist stance, segregating public buses by gender or horrendous harassment as seen with throwing stones at motorists on shabbat. Spitting and calling women and girls 'whores' from outside their community because they don't conform to their standards of dress or don't go to the back of the bus is a חילול השם (chilul Hashem: desecration of G-d's Name), which is behaviour that brings disgrace to those who do it, and is NOT על פי תורה (al pi torah - according to torah).

Sad part is, you are more brainwashed than them because you don't even know that you've been brainwashed.

An Israeli woman was asked if she is upset over the propaganda and brainwashing replied, 'What is so bad about a clean mind ?'
Some people are born to lead including leading astray, but most people are born like lemmings content to follow. It's easier.
If only we could agree worldwide to leave the people who opt out of control well enough alone..

Children are so innocent. It was nice to see the children playing together. It is too bad Palestinian children don't get the same.

@ Chloe - two generations of Palestinian children have grown up knowing nothing other than military occupation at gunpoint. They see their friends (and brothers) dragged into captivity from their beds, or killed on the streets, and their schools closed, destroyed and bombed. And when they play together (as football on the beach in Gaza) they are killed by the Israeli occupiers. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/israel-gaza-conflict-leaflets-dropped-on-northern-gaza-ordering-100000-to-evacuate-amid-fears-of-9609788.html
Yet they attain amazing achievements under savage military occupation enforced by atrocities and destruction.

I want that Jewish state for their safety.
But I don't know how it would be possible.
Because this kind of political movement like the Israeli extremism regime and Hamas is also dangerous. They both are controlled by other powers as if they will destroy among themselves..

My grandparents were Holocaust victims. They are dead now. But I remember them living with us when I was around nine or so. I would wake up because one or both of them would start screaming in the middle of the night. I would run into their room, and they'd describe in great detail what had happened to them. After my grandpa died at age 50 from lung cancer, I found a journal in under his pillow dated during WWII. It described in great detail what happened to him.
