People can't handle the terrible memories of this lifetime alone. Imagine if lifetime of past memories came back flooding, you would go insane. That is why enlightened beings always chose to live this life( time) at least sensibly if not consciously. Most people are simply excited to know their past lives without thinking of the damaging consequences.

There is no gurantee for oinary beings where karma might throw us. The last state of mind before dying is very critical , if one dies with guilt or anger or craving , afraid etc one feels heaviness, burning sensation, chilling sensation etc that becomes one's reality of experience in another life.
