    I would have to give the "best deck name" award to Stax. It's a triple entendre: 'stacks can refer to Smokestacks, a card prominently featured in the deck; "stacks" as there are a ton of triggered abilities that use the stack each turn, or "$T4KS," which is short for "The Four Thousand Dollar Solution," the unabbreviated actual deck name, the idea you can cram (then) four thousand dollars worth of cards into a deck to build the best Vintage deck in the format.

  • @lucasash9992
    @lucasash9992 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    I was also told that the name Death and Taxes also referred to the fact that it was inevitable that someone in a Legacy event was running the deck since it was originally rather cheap (for a Legacy deck) to put together and straightforward to pilot.

    • @adeorose
      @adeorose 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It originally comes from "there are only three things certain in life, death, taxes, and someone bringing a white weenie deck to a tournament".

  • @asdffjsdjasd
    @asdffjsdjasd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Some historical notes:
    Nizzahon mentioned Mystic Enforcer in Miracle Grow. The white splash was actually invented by Ben Rubin. He sent it to Brian Kibler as a file named sickestever.dec (I believe .dec was the old MTGO file extension). They both top 8'd a GP with it and there was a while when the white splash version was just known as sickestever.dec before it ultimately became Super Grow.
    I can't confirm this but I've heard that MUD was also a play MUC (mono blue control) which used to a popular archetype. The prison elements making MUD something like mono brown control.
    Death and Taxes' name is also a reference to white weenie strategies being ubiquitious throughout Magic's history. The joke being that death, taxes, and someone trying to play white weenie in every format are inevitable.
    My all time favorite deck name is Solidarity. It was an old only instants version of High Tide in Legacy. The deck's creator was poking fun at Legacy's history of deck names that tell you absolutely nothing about the deck and named his deck after the junk common enchantment from Urza's Destiny.

    • @stevenglowacki8576
      @stevenglowacki8576 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      .dec was the Apprentice file format suffix, which was a late 90s early 2000s thing before Magic Online ever came out, and didn't enforce the rules, so it was more like just an online table top with functionality pertaining to magic. I think one such program still in development is Cockatrice - I used something recently to try out test draws of a deck idea without having to buy all the cards on Magic Online or proxy them up on paper, so there's still some use for it.

    • @asdffjsdjasd
      @asdffjsdjasd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenglowacki8576 Apprentice! Thanks! I was actually trying to remember that name the other day and couldn't. I forgot the site but I used to play tournaments through Apprentice. You would use IRC for matchmaking and judge rulings and stuff. I remember Cockatrice being in beta and the debate about switching was pretty fierce.

    Understandable why Four Horsemen isn't on the list but that holds a very special place in terms of deck naming since it strikes fear into judges hearts when they need to do a ruling with the deck with its "infinite combo" and the name accurately describes the deck with the "four horsemen" being 3x narcomoeba and a 1x dread return in the graveyard so when you saw them all you lost.

    As much as I love these, my favorite (and favorite deck type) is Hate Bears. It immediately explains that it will have a lot of bears or things close to bears like Leonin Arbiter, Tidehollow Sculler, Gaddock Teeg, Thalia, Sanctifier en-Vec, Kataki, Leonin Relic Warder, etc. that all hate on the opponent's deck. It may be a deck with a lot of variations, but that aspect to it is always there and the name is short, sweet, and to the point about what it is and what it does.

    • @youtubesucksbutts
      @youtubesucksbutts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is literally Death & Taxes. The lists splash green for Teeg when they have to deal with Mind's Desire and similar fuckery.

    • @ThorsShadow
      @ThorsShadow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To add to what the other comment said: "hate bears" is a name for a certain kind of card. A creature, that usually costs 2 mana and has 2/2 (same statline and cost as most bears in the game) and that hates on something. Death & Taxes is THE hate bear deck as pretty much all of its creatures are hate bears. So, yeah, hate bears was on the list.

    My favorite name that I came up with for a deck was "Legacy Pregame"; it uses several cards that you can reveal from your opening hand, as well as pitch spells to win the game on the very first turn. Pregaming can also refer to getting really drunk before going to a sporting event, which is generally a bad decision, just like playing Legacy Pregame, so I think it fits pretty well.

    I think one of the best named decks of all time is Soul Sisters. Soul Sisters is a rather simple deck, gain life while running creatures that either gain you life, or interact with said life gain. The wincon being Ajani’s Pridemate or your opponent conceding due to your insurmountable life gain. However the name of the deck is both a reference and directly named after two separate cards in the deck. The two cards that gave the deck its name are Soul Warden and Soul’s Attendant. These two cards have an identical effect, "Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you may gain 1 life." Both cards depict similar looking female characters and they both have the same effect, hence why players grouped them together and called them sisters. However the second part of the name comes from a popular song at the time of the deck's inception, Hey, Soul Sister by Train. Seeing both of the cards have soul in the name while also being commonly grouped together, along with this songs release, it forever cemented Soul Warden and Soul’s Attendant as sisters. Soul Sister since the begin has never been a particularly high tier deck, however the deck is still sought after due to its simplicity allowing new players to get into the game and have a semi-competitive deck, and for that it will always have a special place in my heart.

    • @skeven0

    I'm somewhat sad that no cereal names got in, as one of my top picks for deck names was "Full English Breakfast", which was a Survival of the Fittest deck that sought to win using Volrath's Shapeshifter and timing tricks with Survival activations. It was so-named because, like cereal decks, there was a straightforward combo in the deck that generally led you to winning, but it had a lot more heft to it (and game plan outside the combo) than just assembling a combo like the cereal decks, such that it was a full breakfast, not just cereal. I suppose a strike against it (and the other cereal decks) is that you have to know something about the history of the naming convention of cereal decks to understand what's going on, and it also doesn't really describe the actual combo itself very well. Also, it didn't really catch on much before it was no longer legal in any format that it was worthwhile playing in.

    I’m personally a fan of Ponza and Blue Moon. Describing each ingredient of the deck as an ingredient of a delicious Italian dish. And referencing a real world name of a kind of full moon that’s also a beer that also describes perfectly that it’s a blue deck that plays blood moon. They are just solid deck names. I guess you could argue that Ponza isn’t exactly descriptive if you don’t know why it’s called that but Blue Moon is both clever and descriptive.

    My favorite deck name is "Rectal Agony." It uses Academy Rector to get Yawgmoth's Bargain, then wins with Tendrils of Agony, hence the name.
    As for my least favorite, that honor goes to "Boat Brew," so called because it was created on a cruise. I think it was a Boros aggro deck, but I can't remember, and the name tells you nothing about the deck itself, so...

    I don't think the deck has been played at any premier level events worthy of awarding it points in Nizzahon's traditional scoring system, but I think one of the best newer deck names to come out in a long while has to be Squeaky-Jiki!
    It's a combo deck that seeks to use the new card from Modern Horizons 2, Scurry Oak, and the card, Ivy Lane Denizen, to produce an infinite number of squirrel creature tokens (plus an arbitrarily large Scurry Oak as well) to win the game.
    The deck has been dubbed Squeaky-Jiki because it bares resemblance to combo decks featuring the card, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, in that the goal is to make an infinite number of creatures with a tight, two card combo the same way Kiki-Jiki decks do. In addition to this the "squeaky" bit of the name is supposed to be because the combo involves making an infinite number of squirrels and squirrels, well, often can make squeaky noises.
    The deck is still pretty new and mostly considered a meme in Modern, but I have to say that Squeaky-Jiki is still my favorite deck name in recent times!

    I miss the old days of combo decks being named after breakfast cereals and being able to use wordplay to describe your combo with a breakfast cereal. Like Trix tricking your opponent to have an illusions, Pebbles killing your opponent 1 damage at a time with Goblin Bombardment, cocoa pebbles when they added necro to the deck, and it all culminating to one of the most complicated combo decks ever, Full English Breakfast, because it was more filling than a simple cereal.

    I love this topic, and I agree with the list for the most part based on your prescribed criteria. However, personally I prefer deck names that are more wacky than informative. Some of my favorites include, Full English Breakfast (and all the related types of breakfasts), The Rock, Dead Guy Ale, Parfait, Dirty Kitty, and Xerox. Of course none of them really tell you much about what they are doing. I would say for some want informative ones, Red Deck Wins, Oops All Spells, and TES are near the top of my list. But for the the best deck names of all time is Sylvan Plug. It is actually descriptive of what it is doing but also the origin of the name is hilarious to me.

    • @gregames4843

      Care to explain it to us neophites?

    • @Titanreaver616
      @Titanreaver616 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregames4843 Sure. Sylvan plug is a GBx deck in Legacy built around sylvan library and various prison effects. The plug part could be used to describe the game play in some sense, but the deck is actually named after a sculpture which the deck creator happen to see when making the deck, and which resembles an adult toy. So naming a deck after a sex toy but in a way that is actually kind of clever, is pretty impressive to me.
